MLB 2021: it’s baseball season!
Dan Gould replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I hope neither the Mets nor Marlins make or miss the playoffs by a game because that call for a walk-off HBP was absolute horseshit. https://www.mlb.com/news/mets-walk-off-with-hit-by-pitch-in-home-opener?partnerId=zh-20210409-156906-MLB&qid=1026&bt_ee=VCzN5RyZ9Vuuy8pqbFTBhXrzJnPtKQ0vcHfl7vp3PGBWssu%2FPsG9nPbwi2D1PmJt&bt_ts=1617968339539 “The guy was hit by the pitch in the strike zone,” Kulpa told a pool reporter after the game. “I should have called him out.” Not to mention no effort to get out of the way, not to mention literally sticking his elbow pad into the flight of the ball. Lame. -
Mark got some 'splainin' to do but if discogs is right he's probably around 35 on the list. They have him at 408 credits but more than a few are comps or 45s from LPs.

Roy Hargrove/Mulgrew Miller IN HARMONY, out in June
Dan Gould replied to ghost of miles's topic in New Releases
I will definitely be interested in this one, too. -
With two months to go, have faith, Aggie. In the meantime I've decided that the route from Raleigh NC to Tampa is among the best. Third time a large box of LPs from Carolina Soul, sent Media Mail, arrived at the local PO in two days. Bravo, southeast USPS.

Freddie told you about the fight but what did he think of the record when it did come out, so many years later?
-
I don't really think so. Their Discogs page sells live CDs but as CDRs, and they are the manufacturers. I had the odd experience of buying a D/L of one of their releases thru Amazon (Doc Cheatham/George Kelly) and was very surprised when I heard seeming pops and ticks like it was a vinyl transfer, yet I couldn't find any indication of a similar recording being issued on vinyl previously. If I'm going to buy something from them it needs to be cheap and preferably thru someone else.

FM Radio Archive - Chicago Jazz Festival 1981 - and MUCH more
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
I listened to the Jimmy Smith All-stars while driving to Naples Friday night, Larry is right, Ray Crawford is great on this - but the whole front line sounds very good. Thanks again to Chuck for being the driving force behind the concept and personnel. Now WBEZ has moved back to 1980 and have uploaded the Jay McShann Sextet ( Jay McShann-Piano, Budd Johnson-Tenor Sax, Claude Williams-Violin, Gene Ramey-Bass, Al Hibbler-Vocals, Gus Johnson-Drum) and Von Freeman - Paul Serrano ( Von Freeman-Alto Sax, Paul Serrano-Trumpet, John Young-Piano, Jim Atlas-Bass, George Hughes-Drums) https://archive.org/details/jay-mc-shann-wbez-1980-chicago-jazz-festival https://archive.org/details/cjf-1980-von-freeman-paul-serrano-wbez -
Allen Lowe once posted here that he was with Percy France at the Angry Squire, and that Percy positively "glowed" when someone approached him and said, "Are you Percy France? You're a legend!" So yes I think you can be "unsung" and "legendary".

Covid Vaccination Poll Update
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Mask wearing is about protecting others and while it's clear that the vaccines prevent serious cases, they don't prevent all infections. And its not known if such infections of the innoculated can spread to others. So mask wearing is the prudent thing to do for your fellow citizen. As a hearing aid user I sympathize Ken, especially after recently having to switch from a neck-secured mask to one secured behind the ears. Mine usually get tied up with the elastic string. But I am not about to lose one because I feel the ear mold coming out (and would immediately realize the loss of hearing acuity. The one thing I do worry about is having one fall out and be damaged on pavement but once I realize they are intertwined, I just stop taking it off until I am in the car and then it's safe.) -
Covid Vaccination Poll Update
Dan Gould replied to Dan Gould's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Visiting Mom in Naples, was glad to hear that her medicare mill doctor actually called recently to say they have shots and were scheduling patients if they hadn't gotten vaccinated yet. However she recently had her pain injection in her back, has been told not to get innoculated within two weeks of that shot. And the alternative date they offered was a day and time her weekday helper isn't available. But hopefully they will call back soon with another day/time and she'll get this thing started. She knows her daughter/my sister has refused to travel to see her until she is vaccinated. (Lisa's architecture career revolves around hospital/medical/school design so she got her shots in NYC way ahead of most people and without even asking if she could get one. They just said, hey you're coming here for meetings let's get you vaccinated.) -
To me that's a case of projection/presumption by Palmer. "Intimidated" could also mean "not so sure of himself" or simply "not quite ready". It doesn't mean Morgan or Clark went out to make him look bad or treated him poorly (how does one do that?). Lee was on fire - and the album is better for it. I get why Alfred didn't put it out at the time. He wanted the right presentation for someone he probably hoped would move some records and make some noise. The record is still fine as it is and I am glad to have it. Lee teared it up. Doesn't mean he was hating on Tina Brooks.

When it came up in the Roy Brooks thread I pre-ordered on Amazon. Interesting that it is from The Penthouse but doesn't mention the radio engineer/host who was the source of other releases. So the Penthouse really had their own reel-to-reel recording off of the soundboard? And maybe that's why its not on Resonance? I have to say I am hoping that Carmell Jones is on most/all tracks and not just a couple.

I'd want to know the name of the artist on that last one. And there should be a toasty place in hell for anyone who wants to sell Michael Bolton/Duke Ellington Songbook. (Actually this one shouldn't have been written for fear it would become a reality, following in the steps of Rod Stewart.)

Had to follow thru on this ... I remember many, many years ago I took a disgusted, or at least, agitated reaction to shall we say Jim's "expanded" definition of what I thought was to be a jazz compilation. I'm a lot more mellow about that stuff since then. I still found little to enjoy here. Highs: Obviously, the Dizzy track and the Inez Andrews, both are terrific. Makes me look forward to 45 minutes of Big Nick on the flip of a Percy France club date that the Smithsonian will be transferring sometime this summer out of the Gaskin archive. I've disliked Kenton's groups because they lacked any Basie qualities. This one, I just found boring. Excuse me while I return to tilling my small plot of land inside the jazz universe.

WTH? Is this a guy who does trades, is looking for a payday from Zev/Cory or what? Does coughed up mean he digitized and sent a copy to you? (You can respond to that last question by PM if you prefer).

Nice ... though I would have chosen the Curtis Amy episode for sure. I exchanged email with his son, Lance, years ago. He had a website, Franklyjazz.com. Said he wanted to offer DVDs of the shows. Anyway neat program I will try to watch.

That's the thing for us ... it really won't change our lives. We never adopted to delivery services, so have visited Publix and Sam's with the same regularity, only the new precautions. And we've been doing take out rather than eat in about 99% of the time before Covid (since we moved, more or less). And we made it to once concert in five years. So the only celebration would be if our tenants, the aunt/uncle in-laws, joined us for dinner - but that will only be when my wife is vaccinated and she isn't as committed to soon-as-possible appointment. She's worried about allergic reactions, and given her history I can't really blame her. Otherwise its status quo ante, with just a greater feeling of personal protection when around the unmasked nimrods who are proliferating.

Jabbed yesterday about this time, only reaction a still-lingering injection-site dull ache. We'll see how I respond to second one at the end of the month.

What are you talking about, didn't you read carefully that page you had to click "agree" before entering the collection page?
