Thelonious Monk - Palo Alto (Impulse) --> fresh new monk!
Dan Gould replied to EKE BBB's topic in New Releases
Well I am slow off the mark and honestly either way doesn't matter to me but this seems like the right place to share this, which I just found on eBay (there's a copy of Palo Alto for $80 right now). How did Boris ever come up with this title? -
What was the point then of bringing up these two artists in this context, then to be comparing EA to the forger? No you didn't say it explicitly but that's the only way to read that second post. Years ago we had a conversation about Scott Hamilton and his influences. I am legitimately curious about how you would react to Scott as he performs now but that is another tangent. Actually - this was a tangent from Swana's CD to a different CD with EA so what the hell. Here's a brand new Scott Hamilton performance: Do you hear someone with a personal expression yet?

Larry, EA only has a " desire to imitate ... and his ability to do so in a manner that would fool many experts."??? That's unbelievably harsh not to mention completely unsupportable. And no one is saying anything that should make you want to slit your wrists.

A question for all youse guys about CDs
Dan Gould replied to AllenLowe's topic in Offering and Looking For...
You actually said " headphone output isn't a line input " and that is what I was disputing. My headphone amp came standard on a 2007 Windows machine. -

Dan Gould replied to AllenLowe's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Why exactly would headphone output not deliver a decent sound to the next part of the chain? For people with $300 headphones on - wouldn't they say, WTF this sounds like shit? I have recently streamed some music and when I did I ran a mini plug cable from headphone output in front to line-in in the back and recorded via Goldwave. No degradation in the sound whatsoever. -
The News page of the site lists out additions and changes made on the site, which is nice to see such an acknowledgement. No mention though of changes to those listings. https://www.joecastrojazz.com/thenews I guess we have to hope for a third box in another five years? BTW just tried to use their contact form to ask about the Adderley, Dex and Sheldon tapes ... and got this: Powered by This form has reached the maximum number of entries allowed for this period. Please try again later. If you are the administrator of this form, please log into the system and review your account settings. I hope they get around to resetting. How do you get a plug in that limits the number of messages that will be sent??

About the only thing any one can say is "true" is ... if there are any reissues they are needle-drops.

A question for all youse guys about CDs
Dan Gould replied to AllenLowe's topic in Offering and Looking For...
Allen for what I imagine the breadth and relative rarity of your CDs I think there would be demand even in this age. I am hard copy all the way, even when downloads are purchased they get burned for listening (and I do that only if CDs are non-existent or outrageously pricey). -
Back in March Niko noticed that there were new notations on the Joe Castro discography. Now, you can go here: https://www.joecastrojazz.com/discography And look for Sunnyside SSC 1393 First disc is Castro trio Second is Paul Bley solo and trio then Flo and George Handy and Flo and George Handy Orchestra Third Disc Joe Castro with Ray Ellis Orchestra and Neil Hefti Orchestra (Cannon and Nat are on the latter though it indicates these had an Atlantic release?) Continuing chronologically we have Castro Sextet recordings but the discography is back to the "SSC tbs" notation that Niko noted, not the new catalog # so, sloppy update TO discography or not actually part of the new box? NO Teddy on these sessions and I don't recognize the horn players at all There's also a "jam session" with Ann Richard vocal TBS notation for what appears to be the Groove Funk Soul session with Teddy - appears to be two new tunes, two unissued alternates Then more trio tracks for a Clover Records session - Kitty White vocal with bass accompaniment - marked "demo" - Bob Cooper Ensemble for overdub - Kitty White w.Art Simmons - this is in Europe and Nathan Davis is in the orchestra And now, finally, we get three tracks with Teddy, one is marked overdub the other two are with Kitty White And that's it. Overall very disappointing that they seem to have started and stopped the update of the discography/release information. I honestly can't say I'll pre-order this but I guess will go for it at some point. There seemed to be some color coding in the headings for sessions between Box 1 and Box 2 but just as they have left SSC-tbs in place in the latter half of the discography, they also haven't updated the color coding on the latter half of the disco. Does anyone else think that the discography has been changed with some deletions? I could swear I'd seen Dexter jam sessions when first perusing this thing and hoping they would come out. I think there might have been Cannonball jam sessions too. Were they only in the text?

My eyes don't pick up small print like that. Or something.

I figured I'd see an email from Sunnyside/Bandcamp but haven't seen one. What's your source KH?
-
Well the PO has pleased me a couple of times but we're back to wondering what the hell is going on ... two packages, both now late several days, one in LA, one in NC, neither have ever shown departure scans and its six days since any update. Getting very annoyed.
-
This is no different from the endless, and utterly unenlightening, debates about OP. Obviously a lot of people like EA, just as a lot liked OP and wanted to make records with them. Some don't think he adds anything to his influences (and I do think the one overarching influence is Big George). BillF thinks otherwise. So ... I hope someone programs an all Coleman and EA BFT to test Bill's statement ... and I really wish Bill and others wouldn't write things like "Let's hope your new record purchase will lift the veil ..." No one changes their mind on command and in the end why should it matter?

COVID-19 III: No Politics For Thee
Dan Gould replied to ghost of miles's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Interesting article especially in context of the reporting of a second confirmed infection in Hong Kong: https://www.statnews.com/2020/08/25/four-scenarios-on-how-we-might-develop-immunity-to-covid-19/ -
Do you have Volume 2 Larry? Just realized that its Bootsie and Larry McKenna on the later record, many years before they were co-leaders on Cellar Live.

It's that NE quadrant that's the worst but this still looks way too close for comfort. I used this for Irma and assuming you have done your prep,

Hope no one is in her path for the next 36-48 hours but if you are, finish your prep and get the hell out of Dodge if you can ... and good luck.

Potential Undocumented Charlie Parker Recording
Dan Gould replied to jabird's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
He might as well have left it that way because his response indicates that he didn't care to look into the mystery at all, certainly didn't listen to the samples since it ain't "stripped down Bird" and if its still not Bird it has to be recorded after whatever date Relaxin' at Camarillo appeared in the market. If it really is 1943 then it has to be Bird, and I don't recall ever hearing that "Relaxin' ..." wasn't a new tune at the time it was recorded. -
