Probably though I suspect longer BFTs with many long tracks doesn't help either. (I always end up longer than a single CD but try to stick with shorter tracks.)

Credit when it is due: Media Mail (LP) arrived Simi Valley CA September 28, at local PO October 1 for delivery today. Original delivery estimate was Monday. I am certain that somehow this must have gotten on a plane when it was supposed to take the scenic route across country.

You're worse than I am on not consulting the liners: With that, Thelonious bid farewell, Danny paid his fee in cash, and his brother shuttled the band back to the Jazz Workshop with plenty of time to spare. A couple of days later, an incensed Jules Colomby called Danny asking for the money. “I told him I paid Monk. He asks, ‘What about my commission?’ I said, ‘Well Mr. Colomby, I never had a signed contract. So if you want your commission you should talk to Mr. Monk.’” Scher would grow up to become one of the most successful concert promoters on the West Coast. -

The fact of what was happening in the prior few months, as well as at the moment in Palo Alto/East Palo Alto is in the liners. I don't think that there's anything there about the band knowing about it or reacting to it. For that matter, I always thought people onstage with spotlights on them can't really see the audience, so knowledge of how mixed the crowd was would be limited to the first row or two? And one other thought is, what was Monk's audience at regular club gigs? Wasn't it mixed already? If it was, then seeing a mixed audience (if they could) from the stage wouldn't necessarily mean anything. That's an aspect you don't read that much about ... It is noticed now that white fans (especially outside of major cities) are the ones supporting the music. When did that really start? Obviously Monk was "old hat" at that point ... and rock/soul/whatever Miles was doing was what was popular among young people (minorities?). Going off on a tangent here ... CJ: Please write what you feel. I'm just giving you my reaction ... -
Well since nobody seems to know I guess this LP is the ultimate BFT track source.

Thanks for sharing. I think you should reconsider your racial commentary, particularly the final sentence: "The fact the group was able to promote racial harmony in a community and country in turmoil was clearly inspiring to them as they gave the audience at Palo Alto High School a sparkling show." I don't think there's any basis for this - that they were promoting any racial harmony, nor that it was the source of the good feelings in the music. Is anyone from the band quoted (I cop to not reading the liners yet, only all the reporting before the CD was issued)? Did they know about East Palo Alto and the issues there? Personally my thought was, how often did they have a gig at a high school? Maybe they were inspired because they weren't in a formal concert hall or in a noisy bar, but in a school auditorium. Maybe that inspired them? I personally perceive it to be two separate stories - a young high school kid pulling off the unexpected, and by promoting in both cities, getting a crowd curious enough to turn out and wait to see if Monk would show - and Monk's group putting on a fine concert. That's the cherry on top of this musical sundae. -
So Trump appointed someone to screw with FedEx too? I've been assured that the USPS troubles are due to Trump's interference so that's the only thing I can conclude. In all seriousness we only get Chewy thru FedEx and since they are so close by - Ocala I think - we get our order in a day, every time.

I couldn't begin to tell you what is going on for overseas shipments from Florida as I haven't sent anything that way in a very long time. Recently I've shipped two packages to north Georgia, an adjoining state. One media, one first class, and both arrived quickly. I don't think the odds are especially likely of a major delay on this end - though that may depend a bit on whether, from Boca, it's going to Miami (close by) and then overseas, or Miami to NYC to Europe. Those are both pretty hugely busy distribution centers.

Didn't know the guy, sorry to hear he's died, but after reading that obit, the idea that Chuck was apparently too far to the right for a fellow traveler made me chuckle.

Shouldn't you leave instructions on what is valuable or maybe contact info for a local brick and mortar that would purchase, or Dusty Groove? If she doesn't know what might be valuable or how to get it sold, I would bet on it heading to the dump. Or being sold for $1 per in your front yard.

Interestingly, the pianist, trumpeter and bass players all have a few to quite a few credits on discogs. The tenor and the drummer ... who knows. I hope Mr. Harrod comes back maybe there was info in the 1998 interview about Lewis' post-A&R life. He definitely doesn't mention anything about drums, only about giving up on the saxophone fairly early. Yet Lewis is the leader of the date. I really hope this is a good record, and I have to say the funny thing is it was so cheap I just did the buy-it-now thing without doing any internet or discogs search on the artists. Oh, and those liners don't say anything either, just a lot of talk about some musicians moving onward and upward, and some musicians not pursuing that sort of career. An ode to "local players" - just what makes me curious ...

So is this really the same Jack Lewis? Discogs ID's him as A&R man but I'm left to wonder that this isn't someone else ... https://www.discogs.com/The-Jack-Lewis-Quintet-The-Culmination-Of-Jazz-Presents-The-Jack-Lewis-Quintet/release/7628909 Since I've been fascinated lately by records by "local" cats, in the hopes that they turn out to be really good, just obscure, I've got a cheap copy coming my way shortly.

Beware of that Lyme disease. I bet you know or have heard of people who had some serious trouble from that. One advantage of having no physical home in CT for the last seven years. And try not to stress on Trump so much. -
Seems as though the only option to find Turner in a small group in a bebop way is Rockin' with Milt https://www.allmusic.com/album/rockin-with-milt-mw0000876805 he seems to get a lot of spots on disc 1, alto and tenor ... and the samples on AMG sound good if predictably short tracks.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it as much as I did. I hope others will grab a copy to hear for themselves. I agree on the originals especially the lead off track. As for Stolen Sweets do you hear a mistake on the first ending? (for those reading - they play the out-theme to the end, and then you hear laughter, and someone - I guess Turner - says "let's do that again" and they play the melody one more time). It felt to me like he just wanted to do it one more time, and they just kept it all. I like that they kept it all. I am wondering if there is any more of Turner like this - he recorded with Shirley Scott, McGriff and McDuff over about 4 years in the late 60s - early 70s. Been a while since I listened to The Worm ... have thought most of McGriff's Step One as maybe the best option to hear Turner like this (plus its got Blue Mitchell in the group too). I think I should check youtube for uploads of those four records ...
