  1. I haven't read the article yet just wanted to say I hope Allen chimes in here. There is no value whatsoever in editing, denying or, no pun intended, whitewashing the past. And the past, as Allen has has argued, is more than a little complicated.
  2. I can't verify that it was a deer tick. But it should also be noted that per the CDC 20-30% of cases do NOT include the bulls eye rash.
  3. I consider them a figment of George Butler's malfeasance. Excuse me, Dr. George Butler's malfeasance. ************************************************************************************************************************** Can't believe I forgot this one since it was only this year I discovered him: Saxophonist Arnold Sterling. He made his career in Baltimore, and was close with Stitt. In the early 80s he joined Jimmy McGriff's group for about 4 or 5 LPs, the best of which was The Groover, as Sterling is the only horn on that one and he tears it up. That is on JAM records, where he also got his sole opportunity to record as a leader. And then ... his appearance on the larger scene was over, and he kept playing in Baltimore. You should seriously check him out. I'm glad I did and none of the records he is on will cost very much.
  4. thanks Brad. I don't think it can be advanced Lyme as I took the tick off less than two weeks ago.
  5. Wait until one bites you. Good news just now: Susan is negative for COVID. Given that she was about 4 days into symptoms I am confident its not a false negative. Now has to get appointment for full blood panel and Lyme test and go from there.
  6. Only using my ears to recognize that our special someone tenorist sounds a little more boyish on the last stage announcement than on the first. Was going to alter pitch via time warp to match the vocal, then apply to subsequent tune and see what we get. I am also having a hard time spotting an exact moment of speed change; tape speed didn't change on the flip as his stage announcements are still closer to basso profundo on set 2.
  7. OK, DIME people and other audio experts: How do you pitch/speed correct recordings that are fast/slow aka sharp/flat? My Goldwave has a time warp option to slow/speed sampling rate as a percentage of the original ... and I am trying first to match the stage announcement from earlier in the tape to determine how much correction is "right". Any better options/software suggested??? As always, thanks in advance.
  8. Tell it again. Tell it again!!!
  9. Might as well mention this: My wife felt ill last weekend while I was in Naples with Mom. Symptoms aren't really COVID (no cough, no congestion - fever/chills, headache, muscle ache especially back pain.) COVID test ordered, waiting on results (3-5 days given as time frame). Next day I remembered - I removed a tick from her lower leg about ten days ago. Lyme disease symptoms match on fever/chills and aches, she just doesn't have a rash around the bite. Finally got an appointment with doctor this morning (prior contacts via tel-a-doc, the second of whom thought it definitely could be Lyme but didn't issue a script for getting tested). Doctor questions that it would be Lyme but I don't think she is too well informed, stated that it takes longer for symptoms but CDC says 3-30 days for initial symptoms. Bottom line, she's waiting on COVID outcome before Lyme test. At least she prescribed pain meds because the headache prevents her from looking at a computer screen, and the backache means that the horse stalls are a foregone conclusion too (and no, I don't clean those - she has a friend who has helped with cleaning stalls and she was able to come once this week. I'm taking care of the feedings ... and those stalls are getting nasty.) For the record, its five days since I saw her with symptoms, and I obviously had contact before her symptoms started. I feel 100% fine.
  10. I don't know what happens but I am torn between my affection for Dave Roberts and Mookie Betts and my long festering suspicion of them as the NY Yankees of the west coast, throwing money all over the place just without, you know, the championships. Wait a minute - they ARE the NY Yankees of the west coast: Gobs of money No championships to show for it.
  11. Probably not. But I've been out of the Political Science world since 1990. Jeez I got a lot of the literature to catch up on! When I was in St Louis in the late 80s I certainly recognized southern cultural elements and similarities to north Florida.
  12. Miami is not the south, properly understood. And Tampa ... not exactly southern the way North Florida is. And I was told in no uncertain terms in grad school that LBJ was a Texan, not a southerner, and that there are material differences. So really the only southern MLB team is the one from Atlanta. And to think I really popped into this thread to state that the Rays cannot blow this series. I would be extremely aggravated if any other MLB team ever does what the Red Sox accomplished in the 2004 ALCS.
  13. Funny Discogs has it just with Tommy Turrentine added, which made me very curious about this one. Knowing its a much bigger group ... I'm curious still, but maybe a little less. Thanks to the poster who mentioned it first though - I haven't spun the Emarcy CDs in ages.
  14. As I think of it, I guess you can say that my father did know best, for among his broadway show/hollywood musical cast albums and a lot of Sinatra were Ella and Louis and Ella and Louis Again. It was probably the top two records for actual listening while I was growing up (total collection wasn't more than 40 LPs, I'd say). So in the fall of 1987 I was in my first semester of grad school in St. Louis. My older brother had a friend in St. Louis who reached out to invite me to a get-together at his apartment. Turned out to be three couples and me, the guy nobody knew. So I ended up paying a lot more attention to what was on the stereo - Ella & Louis. This was around Thanksgiving and not long after Mom asked me what I wanted for Christmas. Since I had spent the previous four years at FSU becoming more and more estranged from modern pop music in all its forms, I told her I had no idea what, but maybe I'd enjoy some jazz LPs. She gave that request to my brother, who picked up two Columbia Jazz Masterpiece sampler LPs. And it was off to the races ... So in a long-range way, Dad helped me discover jazz, or want to explore it.
  15. The problem for jazz is clear: John Zorn 2021 calendar - check Candy Dulfur - not so much.
  16. Saw this in my FB feed today for Terry Gibb's 96th. https://www.facebook.com/groups/78rpmclub/permalink/4826917357333294
  17. Very nice. I did notice that a handful of sessions don't have information at the bottom about the title of the release?
  18. Cashman has no championships forever and has built a roster of free swingers who aren't as great against better playoff pitching. Of course he should go ... whether he will who the hell knows?
  19. Sad to hear though my respect for Morgan declined due to his idiotic commentary and disrespect for any sort of more intelligent use of stats to judge players but most of all, his dismissal of Rhyne Sandburg as a worthy hall of famer made him an a-hole to me. As I recall he always showed up at the Hall ceremonies, but boycotted Rhyno. Dick move by an egomaniac.
  20. Finally received my copy of the Milt Buckner comp ... excellent Turner on the first 10 tracks, all from 1955. What's strange is he gets credit for alto and tenor, and I could swear on some tracks they would have to be overdubbed for him to have played both. Anyway it's interesting to hear, puts me in mind of Doggett + Percy, if Doggett were Milt Buckner, and Percy was a dyed-in-the-wool bopper.
  21. The only thing I wouldn't agree with is the line about the rest of the world laughing at us, because that is surely changing - what was it, France, UK and Spain with higher per-capita new infection rate? Nevertheless, masks are just the most basic precaution and every store should have something like this sign up.
  22. Member Allen Lowe was very close with Bob and put up several posts on Facebook when he passed:
  23. I hadn't realized until late in the match that Rafa was going to tie Roger with the win, so I realized I should always root for whoever is third at the time of the final. Anyway tremendous performance and he is basically unbeatable on clay. Nevertheless I have to point out that Bjorn Borg won six French Opens by the age of 26 when he shockingly retired. If he had the drive to keep going, Rafa might only now be beating his record, because Borg was as unbeatable on clay then as Rafa is now. Interesting to ponder a prime vs prime match, especially using 1970s racquet technology. I suspect though that Rafa might still have the upper hand based on physical strength differences. But tennis is very different today than it was then.
  24. I consider my Gene Harris collection to be exhaustive, because I don't consider his mid-70s BN output to exist. Since I have a couple of rare 45s, I can say I have all of Sam Lazar's output, and Baby Face Willette, including his pre-BN 45s. I have all of Percy France's official recorded output including unissued studio dates, but there are several dozen recordings held by the Smithsonian and my acquisition of those has been interrupted by the pandemic.
  25. For mid-seventies, and only having photos from a good time before, I wasn't prepared to say its not ... but i interacted with Mr. Harrod on his research webpage and he says no so I guess ... someone should tell Discogs. It's still a nice album with strong contributions from the tenor player (otherwise unknown) and the pianist, who was on a few recordings with some better known artists.
