  1. No the Reserve Clause would be in place another 10 years or so. I was saying that if this trade happened now, when its six years service time to free agency, the equivalent would be a 4 year cost-controlled young player with upside for a pitcher who would be a free agent at the end of the season, i.e., a rental. And on that basis it would have been really insane. BTW in 1964 Brock was earning $12,000 a year (way above his $4800 rookie salary). Unfortunately Baseball Reference doesn't have much info for Broglio's salary, they have him making $20,000 in 1961, three years earlier. That was also after the best year of his career, so he probably didn't top out all that more than his 1961 salary. Maybe $25-30,000 by the time the Cubs traded for him?
  2. I wish my Father were around (and still lucid) to hear his opinion on Brock for Broglio. Somewhat remarkably I am just now looking over the Baseball Reference pages for each for the first time; the question to my mind is whether anyone thought Brock was a can't miss youngster at the time because he had shown little for just over 2 years in the Bigs. Broglio had one excellent season four years earlier - actually was 3rd in Cy Young balloting. I know its not the same context exactly but its sort of funny to realize that Broglio was in his sixth full season and free agency would be on the horizon, so if the trade happened today it would have been a rental for the Cubs. As it is they got 7 wins out of him in 2.5 seasons. Last thing I'll say is that trade was wiped out in the annals of bad ones when the Red Sox sent Bagwell for Larry Andersen.
  3. You do realize you'll never get names right? So let's call them Jimmy "don't give two" Shitz and Jennifer "Oh No You Didn't" Jones.
  4. Geez I didn't speak until I was 4 and this kid is asking for specific Mobley. Anyway well done, Gramps.
  5. Assuming UK sellers got it due to different copyright laws, I think Columbia backed down in order to get some money out of Impulse. They knew the longer they waited/held out, the less demand there would ultimately be in the US especially since no one could prevent global online sales. Again that's based on the idea that Impulse said we're gonna sell it where we can, try and stop us.
  6. Check the sound samples at cellarlive. Sound appears to be excellent.
  7. I really should add that the Kitty White Clover record doesn't just have Teddy on tenor. Per discogs we also get Hal Singer, Griff and Dex, too!
  8. So this leaves me wondering if I will get a notification that its back on. You'd think it would go in some automated, everybody-gets-the-message-at-once system.
  9. SCC 1422 does seem to be the Kitty White LP but with some additional tracks. What is strange is that they have changed the TBS notation I saw with these new catalog numbers. And the SCC 1393 notation does not appear on these Clover recordings, just the SCC 1421 and 1422 so the Kitty White and the jam session seem to be only single disc releases. Which means I'd need Kitty plus the box for all Edwards discs. So for the box set its: 1393-1 is Castro trio 1393-2 is Bley and the Handys 1393-3 is Castro with Ray Ellis Orchestra (with Philly Joe, by the way) and Neal Hefti Orchestra 1393-4 is Castro with Teddy, the Atlantic LP with some additional tracks 1393-5 is Castro trio (with Kotick and Motian) - Clover Sessions but no Clover catalog number so unissued I presume. These sessions bleed into disc 6 1393-6 which also includes Bob Cooper Ensemble in a Clover overdub session for three tracks recorded with Kotick and Motian. So it looks like we're getting original trio recordings and actual issued takes. FWIW I had the Lush Life Clover LP. Horrible condition and didn't care for the strings either ... not anticipating it to be a great recording even in good sound.
  10. CD scheduled for December 11. From Cellarlive: "Feldman, who selected the ’71 Famous Ballroom set from a trove of Left Bank recordings ..." so I guess we can hope for once a year Left Bank releases? And maybe BN artists go to BN and the rest are Reel to Real? Sound samples too: https://cellarlive.com/products/pre-order-george-coleman-quintet-in-baltimore Nice BN-inspired cover but that blue font is very hard to read, IMO.
  11. Good news. Wondering about the status of my pre-order with Amazon. It still shows in my orders list and with the September 18 release date. Since it cancelled/was reinstated will they send an email before the 18th about the delivery status? I don't want two copies but I want to make sure I get this if its truly set for release.
  12. Seaver was traded to the Red Sox on June 29 1986. He retired before opening day 1987. There was only one 1/2 season with the Sox. That trade was for Steve Lyons, who famously said "sometimes you just have to change your sox" when he was informed of the trade. Lyons was also famous for this moment:
  13. Wondering if the three tunes with Blue Mitchell are the only ones he recorded with Ibrahim?
  14. I shouldn't have let this pass Larry but can you elaborate on "rate and force/flow of ideas"? Does "rate" mean that he has a few moments of enjoyable spontaneous creation but otherwise is back to the lick factory or amiable noodling? Can you identify these moments with some specificity? I'm sure you don't want to spend too much time on something you didn't find very interesting but if you can provide a little more specificity on one track I'd be appreciative.
  15. Progress but more aggravation. LA package is at 16 days; it showed up to Jax on the 31st and on to the local distribution center yesterday. But not on the truck for Plant City. So minimum two days at distribution center and at least 17 days delivery time. Meanwhile second package got to Jax a day later than LA box, September 1, and is out for delivery now. WTF?
  16. Serious Swingers would be the only possibility, per discogs.
  17. Glad to hear you've listened but that's Harold Land on the tracks that don't have Clay.
  18. Very piano-centric but not very engaging for my tastes as the former GHF. #1 is Summertime and kept me listening longer than I anticipated. Curious about this one, and also 13 which is an interesting take on a standard whose name escapes me and when someone else ID's I'll be pissed. Listening to 15 as I post, interesting as solo organ I can only guess someone newer playing in an older style. Thanks Joe, I'm sure others will engage on a deeper level than I did/could.
  19. Surprised to discover today that in Polk county at least, Publix supermarket has removed the directional/flow signage on the floor. Did not inquire whether that was giving in to people not obeying anymore (flow was generally quite good at the Publix locations I've been to since they put the signage down) or some corporate determination that its not needed. At least face mask usage is high there, and I don't think Polk has made it mandatory. (Hillsborough, where I live, does have a mask mandate and when I went to Tires Plus yesterday, customer at desk and two of three employees were maskless.)
  20. If you took away the "listening to" threads what is the rate of posting? Or the 40% of those posts that get a "" post afterwards? Seriously the board is not what it was by any stretch ... just an observation, and my opinion.
  21. If you add me to your will as custodian of Percy France recordings I'll do you and him proud.
  22. Well I am slow off the mark and honestly either way doesn't matter to me but this seems like the right place to share this, which I just found on eBay (there's a copy of Palo Alto for $80 right now). How did Boris ever come up with this title?
  23. What was the point then of bringing up these two artists in this context, then to be comparing EA to the forger? No you didn't say it explicitly but that's the only way to read that second post. Years ago we had a conversation about Scott Hamilton and his influences. I am legitimately curious about how you would react to Scott as he performs now but that is another tangent. Actually - this was a tangent from Swana's CD to a different CD with EA so what the hell. Here's a brand new Scott Hamilton performance: Do you hear someone with a personal expression yet?
  24. Seems strange we've never had a dedicated thread to noteworthy jazz videos, at least as far as I can find, but these should be noted, too bad there ain't no details on the broadcast. I am guessing early 1970s, and Dizzy is MC on the second clip.
  25. Larry, EA only has a " desire to imitate ... and his ability to do so in a manner that would fool many experts."??? That's unbelievably harsh not to mention completely unsupportable. And no one is saying anything that should make you want to slit your wrists.
