They alternate or rotate among committees. I think next is back to executives/non-players which means Steinbrenner probably gets another bite at the apple in a year. Though if that's the name of the committee how is Marvin Miller on this year's list? Yes!

New "modern era" list for HoF: https://www.mlb.com/yankees/news/10-players-named-to-hof-modern-baseball-era-ballot The National Baseball Hall of Fame announced 10 candidates under consideration for induction as part of the 2020 Modern Baseball Era ballot: Dwight Evans, Steve Garvey, Tommy John, Don Mattingly, Marvin Miller, Thurman Munson, Dale Murphy, Dave Parker, Ted Simmons and Lou Whitaker. So should it be Jeter with Munson and Mattingly to boot next summer? I think Marvin Miller always deserved it, any of these guys belong ahead of Harold f-ing Baines. (I realized when Baines was on the ballot he averaged about 5.5% for six years - their ought to be a decent minimum % when the writers are voting to even be considered subsequently.) But first on my list would be Dewey Evans who hit with power and got on base a ton before that was ever recognized. Career OPS+ of 127, all those GGs, nearly 400 home runs. It's time - I hope.

I don't think the reviews from the AFL are nearly so universally bad. Corners and sides were called accurately, the problem was with pitches clipping the very bottom of the strike zone right at the front, which would be caught "in the dirt" and still called strikes, and same thing for late breaking curves catching the top of the zone. I am sure these are things that can be adjusted in the technology, or if it really can't be, umpires can have discretion but only on those types of pitches. IMHO they should drop the superimposed box entirely or go to robo-umps calling balls/strikes by what they are told in their ear piece as soon as possible. There are still too many crappy umps at home plate. An end to the "he missed where the catcher set up but it was right down the middle - I'm going to call it a ball" calls would be very welcome. Not to mention the ump in the WS who didn't ring up the batter because the catcher assumed the call and walked out of the box.

Kinda like DB, too. But about Deadspin: I find it absolutely hilarious that writers for a shitty site think they should ignore the boss without any consequences. I'm with the Barstool Sports guy on that - they're living in fantasy world and good luck with that. And seriously, they actually wrote that no one can look back at Bush's WS first pitch without mentioning that he belongs in prison? Yeah, the world shouldn't miss Deadspin. I will however, miss the SI Swimsuit issue.

And a lot of first opportunities for younger artists who grew to stardom like Brian Lynch and a ton more.

Cole shows how douchey douchey is: Media relations director Gene Dias told Cole that he could give interviews in front of his locker and that “you don’t have to” do them in front of the wall. “I don’t have to do it?” Cole replied. “No,” Dias said, “you don’t have to do it over there.” “I don’t have to do it at all?” Cole reiterated, more forceful, with dozens of reporters looking at him. At first, Cole’s persistence seemed comical. It was understandable that a player on the losing end of Game 7 would not be thrilled to take questions. But Cole held his glare. He was not kidding. “I mean, I'm not employed,” Cole said. “I’m not employed.” “We would like for you to do it, but it’s your call,” Dias said. Cole grudgingly obliged and said: “All right, as an affiliate of myself.” He wore a cap with the insignia of his agent, Scott Boras, who is expected to demand a contract worth more than $200 million for Cole this winter, while the Astros are expected not to match such an offer. https://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/texas-sports-nation/astros/article/Astros-insider-Scenes-of-heartbreak-and-Cole-14610152.php And right on cue, labor activist Bill Baer writes this We expect loyalty from players but rarely, if ever, ask that of the owners. Players give up their bodies on a year-in, year-out basis only to be discarded the moment they no longer provide value for their teams. “Baseball is a business” we often hear, but it’s only ever uttered to justify disloyal, impersonal decision-making by front-office types. Why should players have to feign loyalty when ownership doesn’t? Cole was a mercenary for the Astros for two years and now he’s going to in search of a potentially record-breaking contract, as he should. Hopefully more players follow Cole’s lead, no longer feeling obligated to do extra labor for teams that wouldn’t do the same for them. The players have had way more leverage than they have given themselves credit for having over the years. The hat debate is symbolic of the larger, neverending battle between baseball ownership and its labor force. (emphasis added) ********************* Get that? It's "extra labor" to stand up and speak to the media about the game/season that just ended. Since they didn't need to hang plastic over the lockers, the Astros should have taken a few minutes to box up his shit and leave it at his car. He's not employed, so fuck him. Escort him off the property. "Go take a shower at your mansion, meat." https://mlb.nbcsports.com/2019/10/31/gerrit-cole-wears-boras-corp-hat-after-astros-lose-world-series/

Betts will never sign an extension. Alternative scenario is that everybody stays (at least the two you mention) for one more run at it. But I think chances are strong they try to send Betts away for some enormous haul of prospects, which will be tougher to get when he insists on going to free agency. If Betts or JD are gone, sign Encarnarcion for 1-2 years. Or how about one year of Betts to the Cubs for two years of Kris Bryant? Before they reunite on the Yankees, I mean.

I'm surprised he wasn't under orders to pull on a t-shirt with an arrow pointing at his right shoulder and saying "This Arm For Sale - Serious Inquiries Only".

Very sad to hear this. -
Yankees decline Encarnarcion's high-priced option year. I thought he was an obvious option for the Red Sox when Ortiz retired but they wouldn't listen to me ... certainly if JD opts out he should be considered as a short-term option. Hell I'm not sure he'd be terrible as a F/T 1B for a season or two.

Well I went to bed when Greinke made short work of the sixth inning. So certainly surprised at the final result but even if hindsight is 20/20 there's just no reason to take Greinke out and really absolutely no reason to take Greinke out for someone name Will Harris, of 9 innings of work all season. If you're gonna die do it with your best guys on the mound. And that doesn't mean Cole necessarily though with a lead I'd have had him work the 8th. In game 7 with a lead your best guy comes out of the bullpen first which means Osuna. And really I don't think anyone would have hassled Hinch if Greinke had given up the second home run so I go back to, why pull him at 80 pitches with a lead? -

Can I just say that I freaking hate that NBC site that covers baseball? https://mlb.nbcsports.com/2019/10/29/spotlight-back-on-umpiring-in-world-series-game-6-as-sam-holbrook-makes-poor-ruling/ I thought it was questionable when I first looked at the video but the rules are simple: He's running out of the baseline, and the glove was obstructed by his hip. Absolutely no question it was the right call. https://mlb.nbcsports.com/2019/10/29/two-former-major-leaguers-are-upset-alex-bregman-carried-bat-to-first-base-on-world-series-homer/ Bregman isn't douchey because ... his politics are OK? Always good to know. https://mlb.nbcsports.com/2019/10/29/what-sustainable-success-really-means/ Between this and the screeching about minor league pay on this site, I swear it should shut down so that Baer and Calcaterra can take a leave to go work for Bernie at least until Spring Training starts. -

So I stumbled across a couple of different blog postings about "picking a wedding band" by a guy named John Schaefer, who is on NY public radio for many years and has written some books about music. He actually booked Percy for his wedding. And on one of those posts he wrote this: Percy was an accomplished sax player – in both jazz and R&B circles. He had released a single in the late 50s that was a minor, regional hit, back in the days when instrumentals still filled the charts, and played on some of Bill Doggett’s earlier songs. So his band could swing. So I got in touch with John and asked, what the heck is this late 50s regional hit single by Percy France? There's nothing anywhere I can find ... and the guy writes back that his source was ... Phil Schaap. So id Phil imagine that or does he have a copy somewhere that nobody anywhere has seen? I'm actually trying to reach Phil via Facebook and his website to ask about Percy, now I've got something else to ask about too.

Verlander has been nothing very special the entire post season and Grienke hasn't been impressive either. That's a lot of pressure on him, in DC, home fans sensing the opportunity at hand, to turn this around. -

There's already been reporting that the Red Sox will look internally for the GM position. Otherwise why start reassigning coaches or get out in front on hiring a pitching coach? They've already locked their GM into accepting Cora's position as manager.
