  1. OK so I had to check Discogs for what Springboard put out ... and check out this cassette. I actually just bought this recording as an LP but they didn't keep this delightful cover. Its Farmer with McPherson in the front line and I couldn't recognize a legit recording with those two so I grabbed it, very cheap. Wish they had kept the cover they used on the cassette.
  2. Well I am down to my German friends, imposing on my nephew who goes to the University of South Florida (they won't allow access to Reference Desk books by non-students or I'd go myself) and he is probably too busy with school and his girlfriend, or perhaps just going for Volume 1 from Amazon which isn't impossibly expensive, and would allow me to also peruse the sessions for Bubba Brooks too. Decisions, decisions. As Jim told me in an email, "you can't unknow this shit so choose wisely!"
  3. Thanks Mike I may have to take you up on that as I learned that the nearest college that has it won't let a non-student look at reference materials. I'll be in touch in the next couple of weeks if necessary.
  4. Specifically, does anyone have The King labels : a discography / compiled by Michel Ruppli, with assistance from Bill Daniels Two volumes, published 1985 ... I seek information on sessions with Percy France and actually found an online search page so if anyone actually owns these two I can direct you to specific pages to collate the information I seek. Assuming Ruppli got it right, and the search function works. Please PM.
  5. Yankees have a verbal understanding with Gio Gonzalez. Supposedly a minor league deal. There's some pitching depth for you Paul. His peripherals have declined but he is only two years removed from a 200 inning, sub 3.00 ERA season (2017). He can't be worse than the rest of 6-9. Of course that presumes that he doesn't suffer too much from having fewer 'easy' outs to navigate with no pitcher hitting.
  6. Hmm. I have At His Best pulled out right now will have to listen to those two tracks. I think I'd recognize Just Friends if it was off LD+3.
  7. Does anyone think that the player's union would back off of guaranteed contracts (the truly huge difference between their sport and everybody else) in return for an earlier shot at free agency or perhaps mandated free agency at a set age? The willingness to sign large money/long contracts would increase if you could unceremoniously dump dead contracts with no further money due. By the way the article is already out of date - Vladi Jr is injured and won't be on the major league roster anyway. Then he's got to play himself back into shape and that's what the minors are for.
  8. (Five, seeing as its # 5-0. Hang in there, and hope its happy, all things considered.)
  9. The only thing I'd add about POA is that if you have it already, you should want to be added to his accounts. This is just in anticipation of some point needing to access his money for whatever, sometime in the future. Its one thing to have the legal authority but its easier to assert it if Rooster_Ties, POA is on his checks. (This has come in handy for my sister as we have found bills that got ignored or missed.)
  10. You should look into getting full Power of Attorney rights - well, your Dad chooses specific areas of living that you have or don't have power over but I am specifically thinking that you should get a PoA set up and get listed on bank accounts. If he becomes unable to pay bills for any reason I assume you will need access to his accounts to keep the lights on, as it were. This is sort of basic planning for an elderly parent. Listen to the social worker and healthcare people about what kind of support he needs in the immediate term. You're fortunate that he continues to be of sound mind, and he is too because he can state his wishes. You want to keep him in the house he's known for as long as possible. It sounds like at the moment you need a home aide for driving him to appointments and for errands, I am just concerned about the falls and the potential for one happening when he is alone and can't get up. So maybe a combination of a health aide and a Life Station system - cell or home-phone based will keep him in a position to stay at home for a while. So you need some due diligence on companies in St Louis. (As a personal lines agent I have to wonder how he has insurance on the house with knob and tube electrical present. I have no market whatsoever that accepts that kind of electrical system in Florida.)
  11. Severino out "until May" at least. And Aaron Hicks will start on the "injured list". He's been out since March 2 still can't swing a bat freely.
  12. At his age, if he is falling down he needs a Life Alert or similar system so that if he can't get up he can call for help. They're about $30 a month for monitoring and free equipment. There are obviously systems that work with GPS etc for anywhere, if he can afford it, go for that. The system for my mother (84, bad knees and back absolutely refuses assisted living) has probably saved her life about 4 times because she cannot get up after falling. I would recommend a review of all legal documents drawn up such a substantial time ago to be sure they follow all current law. And I would push for a teleconference with his doctor so that you get all information that you should have. Even if they don't think it is particularly significant medical issue, you should ask about Assisted Living. If these 'episodes' don't resolve themselves, he is at significant risk, physical and liability, when he gets in the car. And if he is so reserved, you should be prepared to ask the questions that need to be asked about his condition and any treatment. In addition I have learned from my sister that Assisted Living facilities, which are always superior to skilled nursing, can reject an applicant for having too many falls over a period of time. Last thing I will mention is never let him be admitted to a hospital for "observation". If he is, you will fight with Medicare for payment and end up on the hook for all of it. Medicare doesn't recognize that as a covered situation. Good luck.
  13. I think its the cumulative effect of more and more low-mid six figure administrators that pushes up the costs. Since we're doing the compare/contrast thing what are the salaries for high level administrators in all these wonderful 'free' universities in old yurope?
  14. anyone have more info for this one than what is in discogs? https://www.discogs.com/Lou-Donaldson-Blues-3/release/5619435 I paid like $3 for a copy. I've known the label for some questionable releases like a live Freddie Hubbard with Junior Cook in the 70s and figured I'd take a shot at this. But its pretty confusing, as Foster is listed but there's organ on at least one track, I think its electric piano on another though it might be organ also, and there's a track with a trumpeter I am pretty sure is Bill Hardman. Overall its not the worst obscure Donaldson record to hear (those would be the Cotillion releases, and a special thumbs down on Poinciana), only B1, City, Country City sounds like a badly conceived 70s track. The rest is fine if nothing truly special.. So if anyone has other details on this I'd appreciate it!
  15. Considering how young Miles looks (notice how I switched from later to earlier) how about Bird?
  16. My instinct is that Miles' open collar look puts it after Clifford's death.
  17. Jesus H. Christ do you have any clue what credits William H. Macy has?
  18. Kevin, Lori Loughlin got her kid in to USC which is a state school. And when it couldn't get more ludicrous here is this, from Vanity Fair: “You do kind of get the impression that what saved Macy from indictment today was the gendered character of household domestic labor,” continued Johnston, a CUNY professor. “May not be the case, but kind of looks that way. The wife sets up the playdates, The parent-teacher conferences, the SAT cheating. The wife handles the emails, so the wife gets indicted.” Yup, it was the patriarchy.
  19. Thanks for this, I always thought he was kind of a doofus when I'd see him on ... VH1? back in the day. But I heard the Horace Silver interview in the past and it wasn't bad. A lot of potentially interesting recordings there to explore.
  20. BB King and Etta James as well. Also R Kelly. Wonder if he'd like to revise that one ...
  21. Check out this story - top pick by the Cubs is hitting upper 90s after 11 years out of the game. He was a late first rounder in 2001, lost a season and a half to TJ surgery, then developed the yips and couldn't throw strikes. He graduated from college, and started working with young pitchers and now he's attempting a comeback. Shades of that guy that inspired the movie a few years ago. Pretty live arm too: https://www.mlb.com/news/luke-hagerty-eyes-amazing-comeback-with-cubs 38 years old, a very live lefty arm? If the Yips don't come back I don't see why he shouldn't get a major league chance at some point.
  22. ADD: Lou Donaldson, Say it Loud TYCJ-81062 Brother Soul (alt)
  23. Closest I can give you is Tommy of Tommy's jazz. tommy@tommysjazz.com tommysjazz@gmail.com He told me that he spoke with the good doctor on a weekly basis and I think he keeps up contact with David.
