  1. Ahh, back to the pre-order model. Makes perfect sense now. That seeming commitment to do it was surprising. I will have to think hard about this, the fact is that many of these I have as vinyl transfers (the LT releases, The Flip) only so that is a point in their favor for good CD versions plus the Mosaic booklet. I think I will pre-order to help keep the lights on.
  2. Speaking of McGriff I see that The Worm was the one release out of this series to get the reissue treatment but what of the others? I think that Discogs link shows another 4 or so of his and I was particularly curious about A Bag Full of Blues which has Joe Newman and Jerome Richardson.
  3. Now that I read this again, I have to ask, how did Rudy's reverb sound when your own room was reverbing too?
  4. Sad. Something I had no idea about: “Newk” was also an accomplished hitter, with a lifetime .271/.338/.367 batting line and 15 home runs in nearly a thousand MLB plate appearances. Remarkably, he even turned in part of a season as an outfielder/first baseman in Japan at the end of his career, slashing .262/.316/.473 and launching a dozen long balls in 301 plate appearances for the Chunichi Dragons.
  5. Only saw the report "signed, but with no details available", 5 years to first opt out is much longer than I thought it would be. I hope San Diego does more to build a winner around him. Surely next to fall is Harper to Philadelphia unless the Yanks swoop in as they should have all along. Then the Sox can just go into their title defense season wondering how they can hold off the Yankees with such a huge difference in bullpens and not so much worry about offenses.
  6. Reportedly Machado has reached a deal with the Padres. Big fish meets small pond. I'll go ahead and bet that there are multiple opt-out opportunities and the earliest one that is convenient will result in him going to the Yankees.
  7. Yes, and on top of your comments, no one's music room consists exclusively of such hard surfaces. Furniture, carpet are going to effect things too.
  8. Which brings up another reason to question the assertion of best sound ever due to improved converters, blah blah blah. These tapes have been used, some many times, since those 15-25 year old remasters came out. Who says there aren't other new tape flaws from SHM, SACD or over-priced vinyl transfers? I'll admit its surprising to think that all of these are OOP in all different forms though. Ultimately for this music to live BN is going to have to go the download route for the whole catalog. I don't see a lot of younger people grabbing such a large box set when they are more or less conditioned to expect it in a different form and mostly free.
  9. I am as surprised as any about this set, I seem to recall that the 50s dates were issued by Mosaic on a general understanding/belief that older dates wouldn't sell as well as individual CD issues issued by BN but that the 60s dates were more than viable as BN product. It took forever to sell out the 50s date, add in the fact that many of the target market bought these (more than once in many cases) as individual CDs and what kind of market is there for this set? I can only think that they will produce a smaller amount up front and see how it goes. It may be capped at the usual 2500 sets but I would bet dollars to donuts that after the initial run is sold out it will sit in back-order hell until they offer a final "pre-order now to be sure to have a copy" run. I do notice this, they are really pushing the "this is the greatest sound ever on CD" angle: With all the developments in recent years with analogue to digital converters and hi-res transfers that bring the CD to almost the same quality as analogue LPs, we have returned to the original analogue tapes of these Mobley master tapes in order to make them available like never before. "Almost the same quality"? This is not what I was told when I went digital all those years ago. Now we've circled back to LPs are the greatest but CDs can just about match them?
  10. Would not have guessed another, or for that matter the actual first, collaboration between Ben and Drew would still be unreleased until now. Gotta say though the total time is disappointing and a little less predictable set list would be welcome but - its Ben and Kenny, so ... hell yeah.
  11. Sal Nistico's Empty Bed is a must-have IMHO. There were two Jim Snidero releases I've had for years and years, been a long time since I listened but I am sure they were very enjoyable. Awhile ago I bought a comp I think it was titled Hard Bop Today or something similar. It seemed the only way to hear the Stafford James Ensemble which included Frank Strozier and Harold Mabern in the band. That one still seems very hard to locate.
  12. Thanks for the heads up this sounds like a fun read. The one and only time I saw Frishberg was when he opened for the Ray Brown Trio - my first or second time seeing Gene Harris - at the Blue Note. I had no idea who he was but he certainly entertained and I went to Sally White's place the next weekend and picked up one of his Concord LPs.
  13. I see there is demand for these on the Jazz Messengers sale. I'll part with them to the first who PMs me, $12 each postage paid in the US. If someone from Yuropa wants them we'll figure out shipping cost to settle.
  14. Here's a site with clips: https://www.forcedexposure.com/Catalog/timeless-allstars-at-onkel-po-s-carnegie-hall-hamburg-1982-cd/N.77063CD.html
  15. Another spring training, another injury for Jacoby Ellsbury: https://nypost.com/2019/02/13/yankees-wont-be-seeing-jacoby-ellsbury-for-a-while/ Plantar fasciitis this time. Will they at some point just release him?
  16. A simple desire to have a go at every Monk composition.
  17. I fear you could be right but I think the best thing for the players would be shortening the time to free agency rather than fighting over a handful of players who go an extra year under team control than they should. Universal DH also creates a number of higher paying jobs. The fact that the luxury tax is biting in to elite salaries ... that was the whole idea so the players can't be surprised. I don't think there's any legit evidence of anything approaching 'collusion' when some high revenue teams pick a budget and stick to it.
