He's highly recommended. There are particularly nice recordings with the Jeff Hamilton Trio and he's done two fine "music of" sessions, one highlighting Jackie Mac and the other the Mobe.

I almost didn't offer the name until I noticed "spelling very suspect"!

Here 'Tis:

SHM Series. Sold out now per CDJapan. I was confused because the discography lists no such tune on the session, only an unnamed blues that was 'rejected'. Didn't think that Michael would issue that which was rejected so I was guessing the discography is out of date?

Sammy Price and His Bluesicians - 1944 Tracks info accessible here: https://itunes.apple.com/tt/album/1944/919514704 This is complete session with unissued alternates and breakdowns, what got me excited was seeing Ike Quebec on this, totally new to me. And with Bill Coleman on trumpet and Joe Eldridge on alto. Anyone else know Roy had a brother? I'm sure someone around here knew that but I surely did not. Anyway - new Ike and most nice, in good sound!

Dexter was in month long residencies at clubs and didn't need new recordings. Nils Winthers was trying to get his business off the ground and Dex considered it a favor to a young jazz fan that he signed with him. Winthers does not come off well in the book, including having his lawyer send an obnoxious letter to Dex after he said something deragotory in a 1982 interview. Dex never discussed the label again with anyone, per Maxine.

She went back to school to complete her degree. She's a trained academic with post-degree work in research techniques. Have you seen a lot of scintillating academic writers? I am not saying its overly academic and certainly contains no jargon. But writing isn't her greatest contribution to the project, its proximity to the subject and usage of materials he left behind plus considerable perseverance in uncovering the truth of his 'lost decade' which he refused to discuss in any form or fashion, as well as the full circumstances of his last arrest for drugs and the death of his long-term girlfriend which had a very negative effect on Gordon. On a separate note, who knew that the owner of Steeplechase was such a dick when Dexter was ready to sign with Columbia? Not very gracious or appreciative of Dexter's work for that label at a time that it was just getting off the ground.

I didn't participate - I kinda know most of John's interests aren't mine - but I always read the reveal and must have scanned so quickly I didn't even notice Jim and Thom made it on to this test. Must at least check out those two tracks (and I'm kicking myself for missing the opportunity to ID the two Mobley tracks. I'd hope I'd have gotten those.

Knock David Robertson off the board and out of the AL. He signed with the Phillies.

The value to the presenter lies in the feedback & participation and relative to the time spent preparing the tracks its severely diminishing returns at this stage. The last couple of BFTs I have consciously decided "screw it" and just picked or deleted a track with no real consideration of tracking or interest. This goes in, this comes out, what does it really matter hardly anyone is going to post anyway. There was a time in the past when there was regular participation at a deep level from folks like Jim R. and Big Al, neither of whom are even around to participate (I in fact sent an email to Jim R. a couple of tests ago encouraging him to check out mine which had some guitar tracks picked for him - no response.) I'm thrilled that Jeff C says he will check my last effort, he has always been an excellent participant, as are you, Jim S., and Thom. Not quite the same ...

Can't blame you Felser as I already made the same decision during the compiling of my last test this month. There just aren't that many deeply interested in participating anymore. We also seem to have cast aside at some point in the last 14+ years the idea of commenting on the music in the absence of an actual guess. We used to give stars to the tracks, just like in DB and pithy abbreviations DKDC bloomed. The bloom is way off the BFT's rose nowadays.

Got verification from by buddy Bret that the producer is finalizing production aspects in the month of February. He predicts a late summer release but offered no details on who Joe would be playing with on these new tapes.

Hi Marla, looks like you are lucky to have caught the Pittsburgh film! All I can see on youtube is the preview it would be good if the filmmakers could make it available somewhere for streaming as it seems to have come and gone from broadcast tv.

https://www.weknewwhatwehadfilm.com/ I don't recall anything about this but it sure looks good.

No one is saying this means they are out of the running for Machado, at all. Only that they couldn't pass up Tulo at the league minimum. Which is good, because I think he pretty much is .... league minimum at this point.

It is Webster and its interesting that you think the pianist is the leader. Edit to add: I meant to also say that this was not meant as a gimme for Webster, the interesting aspect of the session is the rest of the band, the circumstances of the recording, and the results. Guitar track is not Kenny or Wes. The piano trios are not the same. One is 3:35 the other is 3:40. As I said, fiendishly clever. I get the same thing Jeff. Hopefully Thom will figure out what's going on; would be great for you to jump in as you always had interesting thoughts when you were a regular BFT participant.

Right on the titles, not Ben Webster (and very surprised you went there).
-
Well you did get the title of track 1, and Bill was right about track 2. #3 is not Jarrett.
-
A blanket statement that begs to be expanded upon.

Not Lock but ... Ding ding. And Ding Ding. On the former I wasn't aware of any discussion of this release so I thought I might sneak something thru. The soloist should be noted perhaps someone here has the album ... I think the musicians would be pleased by such a comparison ...
