  1. I discovered Nisse Sandstrom when I came across a tribute to Pres LP featuring Horace Parlan. Now I just got this and it is quite nice. But the solo winner is Leo Lindberg on piano. Who is this guy? I assume he's also from Old Europe? Great playing on this disc.
  2. If nothing else you're on a roll for cross posting in the Sexiest album thread.
  3. "This evening of performances by world-renowned musicians will pay tribute to the NEA Jazz Masters’ careers, with performances by Jay Anderson, Steve Berger, Terence Blanchard, Terri Lyne Carrington, Kurt Elling, 2012 NEA Jazz Master Sheila Jordan, Bill Goodwin, Cleave Guyton, Grace Kelly, Frank Kimbrough, Noah Jackson, Christian McBride, Charles McPherson, Jason Moran, David Murray, Pat O’Leary, and Scott Robinson." Has Grace Kelly gotten better representation off of her videos with asshat/baritone dude? (Not to re-open that discussion but this seems like a somewhat surprising choice). Anyway - how much money is at stake? Because frankly, even though I haven't even read the first book, if this money allows Crouch to finish his Bird Tome, I am all in favor. I'd hate for him to pass on without publishing whatever he's got on Bird's bebop years and the first one only took what, 15 or 20 years? He is 73 now.
  4. Yes found the society website and sent an email inquiring about the CD. No response yet. Thanks for finding the documentary I hope there's more complete performances by Bubba. Damn straight and no R&B licks in sight. I really really want to hear this whole session ....
  5. So I am browsing thru youtube and come upon this What's this? Bubba Brooks in a trad jazz group? And sounding very fine ... google found me this on cornetist Ed Polcer's web page but damn if I can find any other mention of this thing. So I figured I'd post here ...
  6. There was a discussion about this, maybe when he died. I think the consensus was that he resented having to play/tour as he got older and it showed.
  7. If there's not enough coming in from royalties, sell your stuff to Big Pharma. Didn't I hear "In Cars" on a current spot? Works for 70s acts too - Oh Ho Ho its MAGIC will be forever transformed now but I am sure the songwriters got good coin. Or ducats.
  8. I never took note but did Ira's liners often mention quotes? Maybe as someone without musical training or deep understanding of what he hears, Ira was particularly proud of his ability to spot quotes, and when he's writing 300 words on a nightclub set for $50 a throw, it was easy to mention the quotes that he spotted?
  9. Well they promised to spend stupid money and they did. I do think its possible the city celebrates another championship in the first five years though, and probably more likely a world series winner than the Giants are/will be.
  10. Never heard of this until I stumbled across on a discogs listing and went for it. Pretty nice, maybe more enjoyable for me than many of Watson's leader dates I've heard.
  11. What about his Kenton diss? I liked Stan Kenton personally, but invariably found his music too grandiose and heavy to swing. It was no surprise when he made a Wagner album. Teutonic ambitions having cost me friends and relatives in two world wars, I was doubly prejudiced against such contra-jazz ventures.
  12. Hence the comparison to Ellsbury. Obviously the money isn't really comparable the Yankees can eat that contract if Hicks continues to get injured or just isn't that great going forward. But its a long commitment, well into his decline years. If he isn't an elite defender (not even sure he is but let's say for the sake of argument) is that a contract that can be unloaded if he can't hold down CF?
  13. I thought that was part of the "how do you keep up?" question. Now we've got some unknown projects that Zev/BN ought to be announcing sometime this year after his hiring. Can he really have 18 or 19 things to put out or will that come down to the bean counters and we get 3 or 4?
  14. I've seen this on Amazon and thought it would be up my alley. Maybe I'll finally pull the trigger on your recommendation.
  15. Its kind of like Ellsbury only, you know, without the history of success before the money commitment!
  16. Jim,

Trying to help out a friend who'd like to join up, he has never received a verification email. Someone86 is his submitted username.

    Thanks

    Dan

  17. Is it just me or is that a substantial amount of money and years for a guy about to go on the wrong side of 30, who has played over 100 games all of twice in his career, has a career BA of .236 and an OPS+ of 96? I mean, I think maybe the guy has figured it out, his last two years were way better than the others ... but that's a long contract for a guy who hasn't truly wowed the league.
  18. Not one to watch that closely since so many games are so late on the right coast, but I'd have to agree with you. But while his ERA is half a run worse the last two seasons he is still way better than league average. What's noticeably more mediocre is his Fielding Independent ERA which is barely under 4.00 the last two years. Suggests that his still decent regular ERA is covering up some luck. So he'd be hitting free agency after his age 29 season? I'd certainly say buyer beware, even if he actually has a bounce-back season.
  19. I didn't think this was likely to happen, either because I wouldn't watch the listings or I'd inevitably miss if it actually aired but lo and behold I caught it a few weeks ago and have it saved on the DVR. And you all can watch now too because I discovered its up on youtube:
  20. This is getting confusing ... the Hot Doggett LP appears to have a download available on Amazon but without Percy Speaks. How do you drop tracks from a download? And - check this Cootie Williams reissue review: https://www.allmusic.com/album/cootie-williams-in-hi-fi-mw0000644877 They tagged on 11 or so "singles" one of which is a version of Percy Speaks. It's only 2 minutes long could Percy be speaking on it?
  21. Sad news to start the day but 90 is a pretty big number. RIP.
  22. Go! Talk to them!! Find out what treasures await in their estate sales.
