q. about Miles, re- blackhawk period
Dan Gould replied to chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez's topic in Artists
A lot of people derive great pleasure from Hank's playing. Is that really impossible to imagine? Do you find him utterly disposable? Note: I am not one of those who think he's "the greatest" but I do consider him an indispensible part of my collection. -

But is there a reason to suppose that he didn't exist? Its not like he's a dead ringer for some other saxophonist and therefore maybe he was someone else. And anyway, if it was Nom De Session, wouldn't we know by now? I'm pretty comfortable with the evidence that Rocky Boyd existed that Pete posted. -
A beautiful companion, she was fortunate that she was saved from the fate she was facing and had a good deal of time with a loving family. I'm sorry for your loss.

That's what a Miles studio date with HANK sounds like. Seems to me that if Miles was just a little less dismissive in his autobiography, we'd all be on the same page - Hank and Miles together just weren't that good, but Hank could still play. Having said that, I'm enough of a fan that I'd never want to be without the complete Blackhawk recordings. -
Agree with Allen, prices can be high but the service is fine and the grading is accurate.

Well, there is an update for those interested. My wife's friend used her Wicca beliefs to 'cleanse' the property. Fascinating process - did you know that doors and windows aren't just architectural constructs to allow entry and exit to a structure? They are also entry and exit points for those of a less corporeal nature. How do you close the entry? Salt. So - its done, and if done successfully, that would be the end, no more weird things happening. And, that night, what had been a quiet period after the New Year was broken with a lot of loud noises, footsteps, and Sunday morning, in the room where the loudest noises were heard, unexplained scratches in the cabinet door. Be interesting to see what happens next. If you think its real, it sounds like they only pissed it off.

Nice story and good news that his health is on the upswing. But did he really record I'd like to think that's the kind of fact-checking that newspapers used to get right.

Sounds like he's found a different Japanese B-3 player.

Download please.

Because I intensely despise their QB and the franchise in general and I couldn't give a fuck who their fans might root for in other sports. Here's a clue why I might hate those fuckers:

I'll be fucking pissed if the Giants win next week.

On what theory is played two times vs one time (or many more times) informative about condition? Discs played a thousand times are indistinguishable from discs played once, or never, if they are handled in such a way that they don't get dropped or scuffed in some way. If these were LPs, "played once" means something (assuming there aren't any manufacturing flaws like "bubbles"). CDs, not so much.
-
Just out of curiosity, what possible significance is derived from the number of times a disc has been played?

Best wishes for a Happy Birthday to my Gene Harris connection.

We did - Pay It Forward iirc. But instead of searching for it I just posted my own. -

Hanging out here all the time has its benefits! I just hope the LP lives up to the hype the other guys have heaped on this one. (It is cool to hear Sam on some Junior Parker and Jimmy McCracklin tunes.) -
I'm waiting for the Barbie Bubele.

100 INESSENTIAL, but rather enjoyable
Dan Gould replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Miscellaneous Music
The Perri Lee is a pretty good LP if you can find it. Still like to find her other recording with Clifford Scott - MG put me on to it years ago but it shows up far less frequently than Bigfoot, Yeti or that thing in Loch Ness. -

Hope you have time and motivation to stick around and post, MG! -

Well I'd have avoided the mistake if Black Top had used the same cover as the original vinyl - I know I would have recognized it. Oh well ... -

If that's a request for the LP, its yours. -
I mistakenly picked up a VG+/VG+ copy of Magic Touch, a live recording of Magic Sam and Shakey Jake at Sylvio's in 1968. Black Top issued it CD format but I was foolish enough not to realize it, being 1500 miles away from my collection at the time. Here's a review of the recording (there are actually 14 tracks, not the 8 listed). Anyway, its a great LP but I don't feel like farting around with selling it on ebay. Its free to a good home - Media Mail included if the first respondent is in the U.S.; if the first respondent is from outside the U.S. I'll need compensation for shipping costs TBD. Grab a great recording and help my karmic balance!

alternate Liberty BN cover? - Bennie Green Walkin' & Talkin
Dan Gould replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Discography
I like that cover, and yes, there was a discussion once about an alternative Soul Station cover, presumably issued around the same time. Iirc, the newly conceived photo was of a train station. I guess there's something to be said for literalism, but give me Walkin' and Talkin' with a hot chick in a short skirt any day!
