  1. I see the Red Sox have begun starting Mike Lowell in the DH spot. While this may not definitively indicate that Ortiz is cooked, he's at least browning in the skillet. You might do a little more investigating than just glancing at the box score. Francisco Liriano, looking very much like he did in 2006 (he threw seven innings of shut out ball) was the starter. I dare say that Matsui might have sat last year against such a tough lefty. It doesn't take much of a brain to decide to give Lowell a start in those circumstances.
  2. This from the man who has declared Ortiz cooked, and all on the basis of, approximately 6% of their seasons (two out of 33 starts; 29 out of 500 PAs).
  3. My criticism wasn't of you but of whoever coined the phrase. Unless of course you meant to say "the phrase most commonly used by me and my mates."
  4. Actually I'm saying that *while wanking*, self-regard is paramount. Therefore "self-important wanker" is tautologous.
  5. Pretty sure it's not 'proper' English and apologies if it offends anyone but "self important wanker" is the phrase most commonly used in this part of London. What a silly phrase. What could possibly be more important to the self than wanking?
  6. And now for a little experiment, some blues LPs I am willing to part with - these are mostly in the same $3-5 range but I reserve the right to look for a bit more on some. JOHN MAYALL JAZZ BLUES FUSION (POLYDOR) VG (edge wear, ring wear) / VG+ with Blue Mitchell and Clifford Solomon SAUNDERS KING, THE FIRST KING OF THE BLUES (ACE) VG+ (some ring wear in back) / NM MUDDY WATERS SINGS BIG BILL BROONZY (ORIGINAL CHESS MASTERS) VG+ / NM CHARLES BROWN, ONE MORE FOR THE ROAD (DEMON RECORDS) NM / NM with Harold Ousely, Kenny Washington, Billy Butler LAZY LESTER, HARP & SOUL (ALLIGATOR) NM /NM LITTLE MILTON, HIS GREATEST SIDES (CHESS) VG+ / VG+ ROY MILTON, RM BLUES (SPECIALTY) VG (creasing due to being in shrink wrap too long) / NM HUBERT SUMLIN'S BLUES PARTY (BLACK TOP) with Ronnie Earl and Ron Levy NM / NM THE LEGACY OF THE BLUES VOLUME 4 MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (GNP CRESCENDO) NM / VG+ ALBERT COLLINS, ICE COLD BLUES (CHARLY RECORDS REISSUE OF IMPERIAL RECORDINGS) NM / NM TENTH ANNIVERSARY ANTHOLOGY VOLUME 1 LIVE FROM ANTONE'S (ANTONE'S) NM / NM with Snooky Pryor, James Cotton, Albert Collins, Sunnyland Slim, Buddy Guy, Pinetop Perkins, Otis Rush and Jimmy Rogers BLUES FROM BIG BILL'S COPA CABANA (CHESS) NM / NM Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Sonny Boy, Willie Dixon, Otis Spann in a live recording - at least I understand it to be a legit a live recording. MEMPHIS SLIM & MATT MURPHY, TOGETHER AGAIN ONE MORE TIME, LIVE FROM ANTONE'S (ANTONE'S) NM / NM FREDDIE KING ROCKING THE BLUES LIVE (CROSSCUT RECORDS) VG+ / NM 1974 and 1975 recordings in West Germany I'm still deciding on whether to list any more blues titles, since my musical interests have moved toward this genre more than any other I am hesitant to let much more go.
  7. Here are the "nicer" LPs that I believe are worth $6 or more. First the old ones: SONNY STITT, THE BUBBA'S SESSIONS (ATLAS JAPAN) VG+ (slight browning on the back, no other flaw) / NM Lockjaw/Sweets and Eddie Higgins in the group COUNT BASIE STORY (ROULETTE) Box set with a bust of Basie on top of a piano - its the Atomic group playing the 30s tunes. Two LPs / great Mosaic style booklet / box is NM - vinyl is VG+ JIMMY RUSHING, IF THIS AIN'T THE BLUES (VANGUARD) VG (unobtrusive tape on one seam, tape with letter "R" on front, bit of edgewear to spine - all in all still a nice cover) / VG+ LISTEN TO THE BLUES WITH JIMMY RUSHING (JAZZTONE) VG+ (browning on back, intact seams but a bit of edge wear) / VG+ DON PATTERSON, OPUS DE DON (PRESTIGE) with Junior Cook, Blue Mitchell VG+ (slight corner damage) / VG JAM SESSION #3 (VERVE - REISSUE BY POLYDOR JAPAN) NM / NM JOE NEWMAN & BILLY BYERS, NEW SOUNDS IN SWING (JAZZTONE SOCIETY) VG+ / VG+ JOHNNY HODGES & WILD BILL DAVIS, WINGS AND THINGS (VERVE) VG+ (very subtle flaws - sticker residue, edge wear) / NM MEL POWELL TRIO (with Ruby Braff), THINGAMAGIG (VANGUARD) VG+ / VG+ JOHNNY OTIS SHOW LIVE AT MONTEREY (EPIC) featuring Big Joe Turner, Roy Milton, Eddie Cleanhead Vinson, Ivory Joe Hunter, Margie Evans, Pee Wee Crayton AND, it includes your very own poster to hang on your bedroom wall! Neato!!! VG+ (ring wear) / VG+ And now the new ones: GLORIA SMYTH, LIKE SOUL! (WORLD PACIFIC) VG+ / VG+ Interesting vocalist accompanied by Les McCann with Teddy Edwards, Lenny McBrowne and the 4 Souls, Teddy with Ronnie Ball, Teddy with Joe Castro, and Ronnie Ball Trio JIMMY SMITH AT THE CLUB BABY GRAND (BLUE NOTE 1528 - DEEP GROOVE, 767 LEXINGTON AVENUE ON LABEL, RVG & EAR) VG / VG to VG- and probably rougher on Side 2 BILLY LARKIN & THE DELEGATES FEATURING CLIFFORD SCOTT, BLUE LIGHTS (AURA) VG / VG or a bit better vinyl (scuffs are light) paper peeling on front, stain on back BARBARA DANE, LIVIN WITH THE BLUES (DOT) VG+ / VG+ Earl Hines, Benny Carter (only LP in which he plays trumpet exclusively!) and Plas Johnson lead small group accompaniment. RON FEUER, HAMMOND CHEESE (DEL-FI) VG+ / VG+ Feuer was a forgotten organist who got Frank Rosolino, Bill Perkins, Paul Moer, Jimmy Bond and Billy Higgins (here Billy Wiggins) to back him up on a label not exactly known for jazz. WTF? And the album has a huge block of cheese pictured in front of his Hammond organ. Double WTF? Definitely interesting to hear.
  8. Here is the final batch of $3-5 LPs. Remember, $2 per LP mailer plus actual shipping cost, and grading is cover/vinyl. Later tonight I will be adding a final few "nice" LPs and about 20 blues LPs. 9. Couldn't happen to a more deserving GM, that's for sure, but Manuel will catch the flak first I am sure. Here's hoping Jason Bay will be happy having held out for every last dollar.
  10. Thanks for acknowledging me. For the record, I greatly enjoy the Lighthouse concerts as well as the Fresh Sound issued concert that iirc came from a different locale around the same time. Last Session though is one that ranks pretty low on the one-time Mogie Man's list. (Who remembers my original online handle? Vic probably does.)
  11. I was reading an article in which the author used the word ... Only joking. That Mizell story is an old chestnut. By the way Chewy, I came across an interview with Hank (conducted by Phil Woods) in the French Jazz Magazine today (c. 1970). Do people know about this piece? I didn't. He talks about dancing at a disco with Dexter Gordon. Preemptive apologies for any language errors. Full and unconditional pardon for all language errors now and in perpetuity if you'd translate and post that Hank interview.

  13. Well I'm passed stupid now.
  14. Years ago my recurring dream was that Lee wasn't shot at Small's and that he brought Hank into his group, keeping Hank consistently employed and giving us some more recordings into the 70s. I have to wonder if Hank might have had a shot at living long enough to have enjoyed some real acclaim if he had the ability to take better care of himself. Maybe not given the personal issues but its a nice dream.
  15. And he's a recent college graduate.
  16. You have to go back to pre-cancer-diagnosis Jon Lester to find such an utterly appalling, pathetic performance. He better get his shit together soon.
  17. First I am going to bring together the LPs that remain available, and later today I plan to add another 100 or so, including some blues LPs, so please stay tuned, and if you're new to the list, post here if you have questions or want to express an interest on anything here. 19. One definite bright spot so far: Adrian Beltre looks locked in. He's hitting .400, only 1 double so far but 6 RBI, and a .380 OBP. And thankfully, Ellsbury didn't break any ribs when Beltre ran him over chasing a foul pop. But I bet he won't play before they get back to Fenway. He's been hitting since the Yankee series but I don't mind seeing Hermida in there. Everyone talks about Lowell being the guy to replace Ortiz if Ortiz can't cut it but I think the smart play is Hermida, who has a very smooth swing and some definite pop in his bat.

  22. Whatever dude, but what the fuck is this: You're a teacher and you capitalize "black people"? What a joke. Of course, I've read about how tough it is to fire CA teachers. I'm sure there are far worse examples than you but still ...
  23. The only time I can think of Papelbon doing it other than the ninth inning is when he's come in for an inning-plus save, when he gets the last out of the eighth. And that happens when? Stretch drive games and playoffs. Y'know, games that actually really really matter. Not fifth innings of fifth games. I'll agree that his fist pump wasn't a big one, but the fact is that the kid has been doing it, and going much bigger, since last season. He's excitable - fine. It still isn't right and in some ways its more noticeable than Joba. At least Joba celebrates in the eighth inning, when he's gotten it to Mo, which is practically a win anyway. As for your other point, its in Lowell's best interest to announce that this will be his last year. Given the economics and his hip condition, if he wanted to continue to play next year, he'd find himself sitting by the phone with no one dialing his number. So if he wants to frame it as his kids getting older or whatever, that's fine. Better to go out on your own terms. Oh, and you gotta love baseball when a reeling team can face the defending Cy Young winner and end up scoring eight runs and getting the win. About damn time, and I can't decide if they are the victims of bad luck or if this team is going to have trouble all year. Would be nice to get the series win tomorrow though.
