  1. Jim - I had a Nero program that would say that the files are too big, that overburn could be attempted but that permanent damage might result. Maybe it was something the Nero program included if it detected an older burning drive? I don't know but I never proceeded.
  2. God, I can only imagine what such a guide would say about visiting Florida (or Texas, but I know Florida).
  3. But that can damage the drive! I've always been afraid to try that after seeing the warning. I think that burning to a DVD does create, in effect, a regular CDR. I made a trade with someone for a DVD of a Gene Harris - Frank Wess concert in Austria. I had trouble extracting the audio layer and he helped me out by sending the whole two hour concert on a DVD-R, which to my surprise played on the stereo.
  4. Can we submit nominations? I'm partial to this one and this one.
  5. "his Blue Note contract having ended" Uh, not exactly.
  6. Thanks James. Its Gracie who doesn't do too well when these things happen. Her separation anxiety is so bad, she has been totally beside herself when Susan has taken Coltrane to the vet and only more so when she left him there yesterday and then went to get him this morning. Just totally out of control howling in despair - but oh so happy when he got home.
  7. Last Sunday Coltrane once again came up lame after reacting to someone walking behind our property. We knew it was serious when he still wouldn't put any weight on his right knee hours later and as it turns out he tore the ACL and damaged the meniscus, too. But he's back home now, looking at three months of strict limitation on his activity level. Funny thing is that we thought he had re-injured the knee that has had two surgeries before (detached knee cap when he was young, torn ACL almost two years to the day of this injury) but as it turns out that was the left knee as you can see in the attached pictures. We asked the doctor if we would have to keep him on a leash and be extra careful for the rest of his life but the good news was that she basically said it would be really hard for him to injure either knee in the future, because they don't replace a torn ligament, they use a plate. My boy's the bionic dog! Kinda disheartening to dig out the pictures from his prior surgery just two years ago. The gray hair has really invaded these past two years. Our boy isn't young anymore but we're glad he's on the road to recovery.
  8. ----> <--------- ----> <---------- The operative words being "right now".
  9. Excellent analysis of Ryan Howard and his new mega-deal here. Money quotes: I think this deal would be fine if it had kicked in immediately but not starting until 2012 and running through his age 36 season makes it pretty likely Howard will be grossly overpaid for prior performance, and those famously friendly and always well-behaved Philly fans will let him know it.
  10. Very sorry to hear this Conrad. He must have been a great cat and a tremendous companion.
  11. Whether his cause is just or not, the strategy of airing this in public is fundamentally misguided. Nothing can be accomplished by perpetual bitching and moaning except for the ego-gratification of having some members say "I think Allen is right". We are all guests, and our host has empowered certain people to act as moderators. They answer to Jim, not the rest of the community. Allen's complaints should be expressed via PM to moderators, and if he is truly inconsolable, he can contact Jim Alfredson for his FINAL adjudication of the issues.
  12. Cool! Anyone know the time difference between Paris and the east coast of the US?
  13. Is that radio & do they stream online? :excited: (I can figure out east coast time myself).
  14. I don't know anyone who hates Rouse like Allen does, and his nasty put-downs mean nothing if you don't hear Rouse the way he does. And I surely do not.
  15. I used the Odell Brown & The Organ-izers track on my second go-round as compiler. I remember Sangrey writing something like "two tenors, organ ... Odel Brown?" and I went :excited: :excited:   Has this happened before? Anyway, MG, I am sorry I never got a chance to participate, I am sure I'd have gotten a few. And I'd have probably missed the Odell Brown track while dissing the performance.
  16. Don't forget sidewinder as well as the silent majority.
  17. Did you at least make him play the Contessa and the Chauffeur before you signed on the dotted line?
  18. Definitely not a late 80s release. '96 sounds just about right. I wonder if the sales were unexpectedly weak and that's what led MC to realize that if he wanted to get Hank's 50s recordings out, Mosaic was the way to go. And two years later ...
  19. Bobby Timmons was 9 months shy of 40 when he died in 1974.
  20. How are you at apting natural?
  21. I am not sure that there have been time limits + unit limits on all sets. I would assume that there is only a unit limit that applies to this licensing agreement. Sad though that even with the sea-change in attitudes about Hank's artistry, the 50s stuff just doesn't sell. I don't know how many units sold of the 60s reissues but in better days, BN put out pretty much all of it. I do recall MC saying something about the problem that 50s sessions have in the marketplace but I'd still think that there would be more interest. Its great music, and I'd have the Mosaic set if I hadn't bought all of the sessions as TOCJs.
  22. Brings up a thought, probably a silly one since I expect Allen is on top of it - but has the set been offered on Blindman's Blues forum?
  23. If there is a mastering error, isn't it likely a track was left off? Just kidding, I think you've done a helluva job, leave the complaining to the peanut gallery.
  24. Mulgrew Miller has a pretty extensive discography as leader of a trio and its hard to discriminate among them as "best" but in terms of being in print or probably easier to acquire, the Landmark recordings are probably tough to find but you should look into his MaxJazz recordings which I assume are easier to find. There are four volumes of two different live trio recordings. For a mix of young and old, you might look into his Hand in Hand recording for Novus. Joe Henderson, Eddie Henderson and Kenny Garrett make up the front line (only Garrett is on all tracks), with Steve Nelson on vibes, Christian McBride and Lewis Nash are the rest of the rhythm section. This one is a real nice date IMHO.
