He's laying down a "Blue Train" - which is a lot hipper (not to mention subtle) than the people who misname the album as Blue Trane.

Damn your clue of "currently on tour" made me think of McPherson and I missed my chance to take a shot with that guess.

MLB 2023: how ya like it now?

Wasn't really 7+ since first batter in the 8th broke it up. You gotta record an out to say 7+. -

Wow, what? The only bright spot on a crap roster still got beat, because, you know, crap. Waiting for the future to get to now is getting f-ing aggravating because it's the Red Sox not some garbage franchise without any assets. I am left to wonder what they will get for Paxton at the deadline, assuming he doesn't break down between now and then. -
Enough for Alfred to retire to Mexico but maybe not enough for Francis to retire himself? I guess the story is that Alfred had health issues and I guess Wolff wanted to keep working?

Here as well. -
I am a sucker for Sons of Sidewinder so I like the whole darn album.

Speaking of bingo cards, who had "Dan will like track #1" on theirs? And yet, there it is. Unfortunately almost all of the rest were misses, mostly way wide of the mark for me. #6 ties with track 1 for enjoyability and of course it's number 4, Hankenstein, that is the one true winner. (One of my best "finds" that thrilled me to no end was a copy of The Flip found on eBay in the late 90s or early aughts and won for a reasonable price. I remember sending out CDRs to a number of people after I got that and transferred to digital, it was pretty darn rare among collectors at one time. )

Thanks for the reminder about this one and it's nice to hear from someone who agrees that Cables' gets away from "the essence of a ballad". My criticism is a little more direct than that but we are on the same wavelength.

Agreed. -
Unfortunately my bingo card came up "work til you die".

I owe you a shot at your BFT but not sure too much is going to appeal and work has been so busy its hard to try to listen. I'll try and do something by the weekend though.

Gene Harris recorded a CD with his daughter, Niki Harris (the larger of the two women flanking Madonna on several concert videos/music videos) which it took a very long time for me to track down. (In fact I think it was a still-born release, like the BNs that were tracked and appeared in ads or on the insert sleeve but not actually issued.) She wasn't the best part of the CD, let's put it that way, so I edited her in Goldwave using the "reduce vocals" pre-set ... It didn't get rid of her though.

Cecil Payne didn't turn 18 until late December, 1939, and Ray Abramson hadn't shortened his name yet either. Leonard Gaskin Papers, Archives Center, National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution

What live music are you going to see tonight?
Dan Gould replied to mikeweil's topic in Live Shows & Festivals
I am sure I would enjoy that but it leaves me wondering, did any of these cats play with the original Dameronia as formed by Philly Joe? Or just a marketing effort to recall that group ... Anyway you could certainly count me in for a night of Dameron compositions ... if it were a little more local than Boston. -
Weird News Tonight (or Today!!!!!)
Dan Gould replied to JSngry's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
It was not a Twitter post it was on their website. As I understood it, it was corrected on the article itself at some point however scattered thru-out their website were little 'stubs' promoting the article, which remained intact. I imagine by now its been fully erased. Ukraine nationalism has existed for a very long time, especially under the Soviet yoke. So I don't go for "technically" correct in this case. Chernobyl happened on Ukrainian soil. It is their Chernobyl. No one has suggested this is the case. -

I don't know about you but I do find it weird that Time's editors (assuming they have 1 or 2) didn't know that Chernobyl was Ukraine's Chernobyl. (And this isn't ancient history because when the invasion occurred last year, it was widely reported how Russian troops had no protection and were becoming measurably radioactive by staying near the nuclear facility too long.) Was it Time or Newsweek that was sold for a dollar? If it was Time, they overpaid by .99. -
George Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm" and contrafacts.

Which I am told is why it's gotten covered by some jazz musicians. -
So today marks the 2nd Anniversary since www.percyfrance.info went live ... I have not been doing as much to promote this year, with the last major effort being the November 2022 issue of the NYC Jazz Record. Still I think the results are good. Overall in two years: 1434 Unique Site Sessions by 941 unique visitors with an average session length of 7:22. This year I went deeper into the stats available from the webhost and found 546 site sessions were 0 seconds long or under a minute average session length (those would be days when, for example, there were four sessions, 2 unique visitors, three pages viewed and average session duration under a minute - basically those were days when even people who didn't bounce immediately, they didn't engage, either.) This is a slightly different way to calculate "engaged" visitors than I used last time but I am comfortable eliminating those site sessions as uninterested people driving down the average session duration. Recalculating for "engaged" visitors, we find an average site session of 11:54. Year over year visitors are down but engagement among those interested is still strong, IMO.

yet the Rangers have done just fine to date. The Red Sox will resume their collapse shortly. The only thing that is exciting is the apparent commitment to go with their youth in the rotation including bringing Kutter Crawford back even though he seemed better suited to a swing role and hasn't looked great as a starter by any means. I like the fact that Brayan Bello now has an ERA under 4.00. If I had to choose I'd like to see Houk in the bullpen and Bello and Whitlock rotation mainstays for years to come. I think Crawford could be a high-leverage weapon but not an effective starter. On top of that he short arms the ball and is an arm breakdown waiting to happen. Being a starter will only hasten the emptying of the bullets he's got left. -
Whoever said "list them all" seems to have nailed it. Yet no one will say "Arnold Sterling".

Yeah I don't think Rusty Bryant was programmed to be less than tough on any instrument.
-
Like modern Field Day events, everyone gets a trophy. So hell yeah to Dolphy too.

not a maybe and more "tough" than any of the others you mentioned.
