  1. I picked this one up last year at a Houston Person concert: Gene and Bob sound very good together.
  2. Whatever the implications of the business practices of yourmusic.com, they are a legal avenue of distribution of music from label to consumer and therefore have nothing whatsoever to do with the subject of this poll.
  3. Minor quibble here about the "a site like Dime" part. Dimeadozen bans torrents anytime a show includes one legally released song. The bootleg site Dime is anti-piracy. Except for the fact that they explicitly say that they don't host any files, just use a "tracker" and that questions of violating copyright depend on your local copyright laws. You're right that they ban torrents of legally released material ... but are they really anti-piracy when they allow the sharing of audience or soundboard recordings, regardless of whether or not the artists approve? Seems to me they really want to have it both ways ... and God bless 'em for that!
  4. To clarify, I wouldn't necessarily call BC "grotesque" but coming out of Ella, I was certainly not prepared for her, shall we say, mannerisms. And I certainly respect her positive influence on the many rhythm players who came through her group.
  5. So in other words, you would prefer a choice which goes something like: "I don't really think accepting burns is right, but I make exceptions, like if I've spent a vast sum of money on legitimate issues, or if the recording is OOP and impossible to find." You're beginning to remind me of the scene in "Soul Man" when the white chick hits on C. Thomas Howell by telling him "I don't think there are black and white. Only shades of gray." then later on when she's hitting on a Native American, she tells him "I don't think there's red and white. Only shades of pink."
  6. I'm guessing it is because the wording of the poll responses. The poll wasnt asking about behavior, but was in a way trying to take a poke at those who do download. Words like "weak" and phrases about whether one can sleep at night arent exactly neutral. Why? I'm weak and I sleep fine. Maybe that's a bit of projection on my part but I suspect that most people see trading or receiving burns as somehow "not quite right" but that doesn't stop them from doing it.
  7. Why do you think people are laying a guilt trip on you and you have to justify by telling us about your paying $39 for one disc and all the thousands of dollars you've spent on legit music purchases? Its not about guilt, perceived or real. its only about behavior: You accept burns. You've given burns. Good, join the club, cuz the vast majority of people do the same thing. But for some reason, you think that your strong moral sense and 99% "pure" collection should give you a pass on the rest. Too bad no one is handing out free passes. They're only asking you about your behavior.
  8. There is just so much B.B. to get ... but in this series I'd start with "My Kind of Blues" mentioned above. I got mine from Amazon. You might PM Stereojack, as when I was at his store last summer, he was stocking these Ace reissues pretty deep.
  9. I'm with Chris ... wanted to expand on the Ella in the collection so I picked up a Betty Carter disc. I don't think I made it through the whole thing before I sold it. Couldn't tell you what it was, but it didn't exactly leave me wondering if I was jumping to conclusions.
  10. Sad news, but I read this and had to wonder why the vases were displayed on a windowsill, in a position where anyone could stumble into the wall and knock them over?
  11. Thanks very much, Steve. MG "You Upset Me Baby", "Woke Up This Morning", "Please Love Me Baby" are also on "Live At The Regal". Yeah, but what makes you think these are the same recordings? Those Crown records weren't live.
  12. Yes. Illegal and unethical. Not to mention a blatant disregard of the warning stickers they have on every Office Depot copier.
  13. They apparently already have my email address. What cheeses me off is that it came to my PERSONAL email. Most of this crap comes to my business email, which can be found by the usual fishing practice of scanning websites. Yeah, but spammers lists are loaded with fake emails. So when someone replies, or follows a link or does something to establish that the address is real, it becomes a prized email addy. Kinda like in the old days when the people who responded to direct mail tended to get more direct mail offers.
  14. Thank heavens I don't click on attachments in my porn spam. I just follow the links.
  15. So what? Now there's a difference in how many times you do it? Tell me, this hypothetical person ... will there always be only one OOP item that they'll accept a burn for? And do they hold their nose while listening to this ghastly thing they've allowed into their homes?
  16. Well it certainly is an Organissimo tradition that poll choices rarely capture everyone's feelings, but I think this one is actually pretty good. Its best fit, not perfect fit. Obviously I tossed in statements about "weak" and 'sleep fine at night' - you don't have to agree with everything in the statement. But there is no serious distinction between downloading from a site like Dime and happily receiving a copy from your friend, Alex. Maybe you think otherwise but its all the same - free music. You take it, with or without a qualm, you don't, or you think you're actions are going to revolutionize IP copyright laws and you're standing up "to the man." As for OOP material, again, it all falls into #2. You burn CDs and trade them, regardless of your personal feeling about the ethics and the legality. So long as you don't fall over into the revolutionary third category, anyone who accepts burns or provides them to others ought to fit into #2.
  17. I basically put up 1 for Chuck and (presumably) a few others; 3 for the people vociferously arguing with Chuck, and 2 for the rest of us, who I imagine have some qualms about burning, trading burns or downloading but do it anyway.
  18. But beliefs and acts are inextricably tied together in this issue (witness Rooster's comment).
  19. I think you're covered in number 2. Remember, its "best describes you" - burns are OK for reasons of your own choosing.
  20. This is definitely a new one, but it is highly questionable to me that this would work very well as a fishing expedition. I think most people know what they've sold on ebay or are selling. For me its just too obvious a fishing expedition to give a second thought to. What I would be much more concerned about is whether its possible that your ebay account has been hacked and someone is selling, fraudulently, in your name. That would explain a legitimate email regarding a problem, if this person actually did "purchase" something from an auction that you ran. I'd go to ebay's website directly and check recent auctions. I'm not sure what "My Ebay" will display but I'd hate to find out that there are a bunch of listings of things you never sold.
  21. Jim, there are steps in there that you didn't mention but since it somehow worked for me this time (I swear i did the exact same thing last time), thanks.
  22. This is the poll I wanted to start when the discussion in the other poll got interesting. I think this better captures the attitudes most people espouse. However, I couldn't get this poll to work but with Jim's instructions, I am trying again. So, what say you?
  23. http://www.organissimo.org/forum/index.php...&CODE=01&HID=13 I've followed these directions before but my "poll" showed up as a regular thread, only displaying my comments, not my poll question or choices. So its not just Tom who has a problem.
  24. Here's a pretty funny site with parody Gammons Diamond Notes: http://www.humbug.com/diamond/notes.html Click on the refresh button to get another dose. Not sure if the guy just wrote a whole bunch of them or if it really is using a random generator of some sort.
  25. Yeah, but these are old performances in new clothes, with no interaction between B.B. and the audience. Just doesn't sound worthwhile to me.
