I've got a nice copy of a Joe Newman LP, Way Down Blues on Honeydew. Its copyright is 1977, and the trio backing him is Ross Tompkins, piano, Rusell George, bass and Ron Lundberg, drums. My question is, when and where was this obviously live recording made? Its even more annoying in that the liners discuss each of the four tunes, but nowhere does it bother to mention where or when it was recorded. Thanks, you discographically inclined!

Boy, did you hit that one on the head O' Weize One! I have been singing the praises of this CD all over the place. Now this CD is worth the $30 import price... and then some!! Later, Kevin EDIT: Actually the title of this CD is "No Problem", not "Our Father Who Art Blaky". I got it from Cadence for only $20.

As a drummer's date, does Joe take a lot of solos, or lead off the solos? Or is it more of a typical small group date? The only thing that would make me hesitate is if it really comes across as obviously a drummer's date.

Does anyone know how old Bringnola was at that point? I ask cause I have a copy of a Coral LP, Newport Youth Band, which purports to be Brignola's recording debut, and I'm not at all sure about the date of that concert ...

Mark, Judging from the private recordings I've heard, there's not a whole lot of variation in Lou's set list from show to show. Did he call the blues tune "suffering music"? Did he preface any of the Bird tunes as being "not recommended for Fusion or con-Fusion musicians"? And last but not least, did he back announce a Bird tune as "Don't Step On My Blue Suede Shoes"?

Its pretty easy to browse your collection, actually. As Bob Seger once said, "Turn the page." It may be a drag to not have discographical details right at hand, but frankly I haven't missed it. On my A-to-Z trek, I've just been bringing in the CDs in one of those CD wallets, so I don't know specifcally who sidemen are or whatever, but it hasn't bothered me at all. The existence of digipaks and mini LP sleeves has meant that I kept one of the CD racks for those, but I was going to do that anyway for my rock/pop CDs.

I tried to save a few of the clear ones because of the possibility that I'd sell some CDs that have printed tray cards on the inside of the jewel box. I also saved some white ones because there was a possiblity of selling some Japanese BNs, and I only find the black jewel boxes at Office Depot. But really, assuming you're still buying CDs, right there is a steady stream of potential empties to use. And really, who among us has stopped buying CDs???

I did not go for sleeves that are roomy enough for liners and tray cards and instead have bundled them and packed them away, and I pitched the jewel boxes. The one advantage to this is that the sleeve requirement is cut in half, which means the binder requirement is also cut in half. My four 550 CD rack was reduced to just three shelves worth of binders. That would be six shelves had I bought sleeves that had space for inserts, and twice as many binders, too.

I made the switch and I'm very happy. And in the aftermath of Charley, I am even happier knowing that had the storm been coming to the east coast of Florida, it would have taken minutes, literally, to get all my CDs into the car ... and I'd still have room for the not quite so important things, like the dog ... the PC .... the wife ....

I can't help but notice that since the one big trade the Yanks made, Loaiza has been piss-poor, and on Friday, Contreras not only beat my Red Sox but did it in Fenway. Wouldn't want to be in Cashman's shoes the day after that happened!

Thanks again for the BFT, Marcus. This set a modern record for number of discs I own or have owned. As to the details: On number one, at least I pegged the era right, even if it was just an attempt to recreate it #2-I had this Teodros Avery CD when it came out but I didn't hang onto it. I know I said that it took me a while to identify this standard-I was sure I recognized it as such but as I named it in my head, I didn't write it down and couldn't figure it out again. So I figured I'd fudge it, assuming someone else would ID it for me. I'm really surprised this is an orignal it sounds so darn familiar. As far as the Golson goes, I just ordered this myself, Brownie, but I had no idea at the time (two nights ago) that it was on this BFT. #8-the track selected is a good reason why I didn't keep the disc ultimately. That's a trane ride I generally avoid. #13-I said that this was terribly familiar and very annoying that I couldn't figure it out ... well now I know why. I've had this Buddy Montgomery CD for a while now, and its all quite nice and definitely recommended. #14 is the other one that I own but didn't recognize. Probably cause I have a congenital aversion to anything connected to Sting. Thanks again, Marcus!

Rafael, You don't have to buy a turntable. Much of what you want is out on CD; there's a lot of classic recordings that have been reissued in the CD era. If you love saxophone and smooth male vocals, I cannot recommend anything more highly than the CD "John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman."
