But if I used Red's version, Dan, then you would have guessed it right away and what kind of BFT would that have been, huh? It would be the kind of BFT I would love!

What's your personal record of continuous play
Dan Gould replied to Dmitry's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Not unheard of. When I worked in radio in Tallahassee, one of the other stations flipped formats to country music and played Alan Jackson's "Gone Country" for a week before they officially launched the format. A better way to announce a format change might be what the station I last worked for did (after they fired me). It was a light Adult Contemporary station, lots of Streisand and Neil Diamond and Barry Manilow. For about a week before they flipped to a "Hot Hits" format, they'd slip obnoxious dance music and crap like that into the playlist, one at a time, maybe once every few hours, then with increasing frequency til they actually flipped. When the phones would light up, they'd say that the DJ made a mistake and they were terribly sorry ... I can just imagine the reactions of the blue hairs to those sonic assaults. -
This is what I was thinking, too. Although Jim S.'s suggestion isn't bad either. Maybe we should pick a time and do something in his memory-listen to a favorite track.

I heard "St. Louis Blues" right from the git-go. I also hated it because of the liberties taken. Give me Red Garland's version anytime over that.

I was fortunate to see Elvin twice; once was at a Bu tribute at Lincoln Center. On "Moanin'" he was hittin it so hard, pieces of drumsticks were flying into the audience, like at a rock concert. The other time was just a couple of years ago when he brought the Jazz Machine to West Palm Beach. That memory is a bit bittersweet though, as I skipped the meet-and-greet he did after the show due to some time constraints and only learned afterward how friendly and cool he was.

Listen to your whole collection straight through.

Well, yesterday I finished up with the compilation CDs, so I've just started in with the beginning again, and this time I will go through each and every one of my CDs, starting with: Pepper Adams, Ten to Four at the Five Spot -

I would have to say John Mellencamp's "Uh-Huh". But it wasn't by choice. You see, in the summer of '84 I caught a ride with some guy in New Jersey to get back to Florida State for summer school. We drove straight through-24 hours-and I ended up with the last, overnight driving shift. This cassette was in the player, and for the life of me, I could not figure out how to eject it. The owner of the car is fast asleep, and I was stuck with this album playing, over and over and over again, for about 6 hours straight. I still can't listen to "Pink Houses". Of course, there are other reasons for that, but hearing it now definitely brings back memories of that night. -
Saddened to hear this, though, as noted above, Tony managed to woo a pretty nice looking young thing only a few years before. There was an interesting article in the NYT recently about Felix Ungar as the world's first "metrosexual" and how the producers felt they had to make it clear that Felix was definitely hetero. But there was much more to Mr. Randall than Felix Ungar. RIP.

Then I must truly be fascinating to you.

I didn't think it was that bad, plus its Melanie Griffith pre-boob job, and I always laugh at Joan Cusack's line, with the heavy Brooklyn accent, "Thirteen thousand dollars? And its not even leather!"

Not to hijack the thread, but this is another nice one from Michael Weiss: Available from CD Baby and discerning retailers like Sally's Place in Westport CT.

First of all, thanks RDK for the double dose of tunes. I believe you said you were looking for a few DKDC , how about I throw in a WTF or two? (Said half in jest) Disc 1: 01-As I listened to the opening, all I could think of was "St. Louis has the blues cause its getting dive bombed by fighter jets? WTF!" Seriously, this is the kind of "going over" a standard that I really can't stand. 02-Liked the rhythms, but the sound effects by the horns was extremely tiresome. Thanks, but no. 03-Fine for what it is, but it t'ain't jazz ... . . 06 - Rationally, this gets 3 stars. Compared to what came before, 100. And so it goes ... Recognized the singer with the wonderful sense of time, definitely dug that tune. So, here I am, wondering what the heck disc 2 is going to bring. Well, aside from recognizing the gimmes, I don't have much to say about it, except that I found the bonus much more pleasing than the main disc, not everything was my cup o' tea, but the hits were much more prevalent than the misses. I hope Conn. isn't participating on this one-all those vocalists would have driven him nuts. Thanks again, Ray. I'll follow the discussion for a few of the tracks and give another listen when you post the answers.

Are you looking for more troops in Iraq, or the reality of actual military service? Because at the current US military death rate, it will be far more effective to have would-be Hummer owners kill each other.
-
Sorry to hear about your friend. That is truly horrifying and points out that while my suggestion is made with tongue in cheek, these vehicles really are a threat to those they share the road with.
-
And, under my proposal, its likely that Arnold would have the right to drive his Hummer. Then I'm sorry, Dan, but I cannot support this initiative. Well, maybe he's not really the Terminator and is just a big wimp and would be on the losing side in the War Games. Then, no Hummer for Arnie, and if we're lucky, no more movies either.

Since the Hummer is getting some well-deserved flak in the gas prices thread, I thought I'd share my idea for getting them off the road, or at least minimizing the number of Hummers there are. I believe the Hummer is much more than a status symbol. It became popular in the wake of the (far more popular) Gulf War I. And why was that? Because certain clowns felt oh-so-special if they could pretend they were driving the same vehicle as the men in the army did liberating Kuwait. On top of that, the Hummer is huge and a threat to every other vehicle and driver on the road. So, here's my proposal: You want to pretend you're an army man by driving a hummer down the oh-so dangerous I-95 or US-1? Then you have to prove that you are worthy of being an honorary member of the military. Its simple really: For every 200 people to put their money down for a Hummer, two teams are created. The "game"? War Games. Only with live ammunition. If you survive and are on the winning side, then you are allowed to complete the purchase of your Hummer, because now you are not just pretending to be Mr. Army Man, you've actually walked the walk. Think of it: Not only will this system minimize the number of Hummers on the road, it will also do a good job of reducing the members of the gene pool who actually think that a Hummer is the vehicle to buy. Its a win-win for everyone.

Well, I finally foundd this at the last Borders I went to, and I have to second Dave's recommendation. This is an excellent, hard-swingin', hard boppin' concert. My only caveat is the African rhythm instruments on the title track-for me, a little of that goes a long way. But otherwise,

I got some gas, and I'm not letting it out.
Dan Gould replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Now is the time where it should be noted, for those who do not already know it, that the low price "independent" gas stations that have the cheapest gas prices ought not to be avoided due to a perceived lack of "quality". The fact is, "Joe's Gas" comes from the same refineries as Chevron or Texaco. The only difference is that when they fill up the tanks marked "Chevron", that flow gets a carefully calibrated spritz of Chevron's secret-formula additives, and Joe's Gas just gets the regular stuff. So the basic quality of the gas is the same, it depends on how much you value those company-secret additives that form the basis of millions and millions of dollars worth of advertising every year. ************************* Rooster, what do you think, that the US subsidizes gas prices and therefore our prices are "artificially low"? US gas prices follow the free market for gas (well, as free as it is with an oil cartel in control, but still). European prices follow the free market for gas, massively inflated by taxes. Current gas prices are bad enough, do you actually prefer that prices rise to the level of Europe with massive taxation? BTW, that taxation is quite regressive, since it is the lower-middle and middle classes that will find it hard to afford to gas their cars, whether they drive behemoths or Hondas. The rich and the merely affluent won't notice or care and keep right on driving and buying those SUVs that you and I hate so much. The better way might be a reversal of the tax write-off for behemoths, replaced with a gas-guzzler surcharge. That, I would support 100%. Sorry that politics crept into my post, but I couldn't resist. -

Is there a 12-step program for CD addicts?

ah..... stereotypes. How about "some women don't understand ...." or how about... what part about your wife not liking jazz did you not know before the nuptials? Thank you Maren. In my experience, it's me who is the addict. Also, whether it's the man or the woman who is the jazz addict, he/she should have known that while in the courting ritual stage. Much as questions about religion, money, sex, children, location of abode and careers should be aired, so should musical preferences. We always think that someone we love should learn to love the music we love, but a country music, hard rock or classical music aficinado won't necessarily love jazz..........................ever. We weigh those things and decide whether we want them around enough to overlook this glaring flaw. And on the opposite side of that coin, Patricia, is my wife, who, prior to meeting me, had a job as sound engineer in a cabaret, thus developing a fondness for a lot of the Great American Songbook and jazz vocals, a big change from her younger rock 'n' roll days and making her even more appealing to me. And on top of that, being a music lover, she completely understands the desire or even addiction for new music and would never deny me my musical pleasures or even my more expensive desires like that rare LP on ebay ... No wonder I lover her. -
And the links that takes you to!!! Like did you know that Kennedy was killed to cover up UFOs??? http://www.conspiracyplanet.com/channel.cf...&contentid=1033 And don't tell Johnny or Caroline, but Did EMP Device Crash Wellstone and JFK Jr Planes?

thanks for the link, AB, but where the heck did you find that site? Take a look at the other links he has - the Nick Berg video is a fake; it was a "Mossad" operation or a Bush Cheney "psy-ops" ...
