  1. I would bet you are thinking of the Jazz Record Center, 8th floor of 236 West 26th street.
  2. All that I've heard are excellent and recommended. Not a dud in the bunch.
  3. There's a Tower and a Virgin Megastore on Broadway. I think Tower is around 42nd street, its across from BB King's club. Virgin is farther north, maybe around 50th or so.
  4. If you go to the Mosaic site you'll quickly see what Mosaic sets are (but I suggest you leave your wallet behind, you'll be too tempted). But basically, Mosaic sets are full box set treatments of a cohesive body of an artists work. It may be the entire label output or it may be subset of that, but it is cohesive in some way. Its a "premium" set because it includes an exhaustive essay covering the artist and the music contained therein, including all discographical details. "Select" sets are smaller, less "premium" with less "sizzle". But they are still cohesive presentations. What they lack is the authoritative booklet and generally, unissued tunes or alternates.
  5. Well, that's ESPN.com info I was going by.
  6. As I understand, Henson is top, and he's done nothing at Columbus to indicate he's ready or will ever be ready. In fact, the last word about him was that he was supposedly ready to return to football; but that never happened as had been predicted and pontificated. Meanwhile, as far as prospects to ship somewhere for a legit third baseman, well, my understanding is that over the last couple of years, the Yanks have exhausted the once prized development system. But hey-I hear Todd Zeile is still looking for work.
  7. Its excellent and highly recommended. Most of Grant's work on BN was with organs or Sonny Clark, so its nice to hear someone different (the undervalued Kenny Drew). Especially nice versions of "Exodus" and "So What".
  8. Or you may want to try Honkers and Bar Walkers Volume 1-3 on Delmark.
  9. I don't know if this will apply to CDs and jewel boxes, but I am sure its worth a shot. Several years ago my wife won some Christmas ornaments on ebay. They arrived absolutely grossly inundated by the stench of cigarette smoke, and believe it or not, the seller denied being a smoker and couldn't imagine why they'd stink. However, someone (maybe on Board Krypton?) suggested that I re-box the ornaments with a bar of soap. I figured if one bar was good, three would be great, so I did as I was told, with Ivory brand soap, and amazingly, the ornaments came out smelling great! Certainly worth a try, I would think.
  10. And once again, an album I went to some expensive lengths to acquire gets reissued. I gotta learn to stop doing that. Nevertheless, its a fine album with excellent Grant Green and Leo Wright work on it.
  11. I was actually more of a Romper Room kid but I certainly remember the Captain. RIP.
  12. Only if he wants to induce motion sickness.
  13. I think Sashimi is confusing separate issues: The general question of whether political discussion is appropriate in a jazz forum vs the nexus between art and politics Personally, I'm just glad that he hasn't gotten going that "Republicans are racist; Jazz is predominantly a creation of African-Americans; therefore Republicans who like jazz are hypocrites." That not-so-merry go round is reserved for Johnny.
  14. Not sure about that, but I am sure that the Groove will somehow manage to stock them, and at a much better price than you'd expect!
  15. Oh really? Let's see: Dan: 638 posts in the political forum out of 2070 posts total. In other words, when I post, seven out of ten times it is somewhere other than politics. Minew: 93 posts in the political forum out of 183 posts total. In other words, when you post, there's a better than 50% chance that post is in the political forum. So I can hardly claim it as my "yard". So many of your droppings land there.
  16. Well, don't blame sweater purchases on me, but if LTB has a problem with the Lola purchase (or heaven forbid thinks its a jazz version of the Kinks ode to cross-dressers) feel free to blame me!
  17. Up, just in case anyone still wants it, its back on the new arrivals list at the Groove.
  18. Geoff, I'm sending you a Private Message on these matters.
  19. Welcome, Philly, and I hope you stick around. One question: What is your connection to Philadelphia? Have you lived there or are you interested because so many great players came from Philly?
  20. Minew, Blow it out your ear. My reaction is exactly the same as Jim's, I just expressed it a little stronger. Have any idea how pathetic it is you bring up political affiliations? Why don't you declare I'm a racist and complete the circle? ***************************** Jim (Jsngrey) expressed precisely what I wanted to express. If Geoff had explained his reasons as he did above, then everything would have been cool. So, I apologize for the tone of my posts but I think the reaction was a fair one. Geoff, welcome and good luck with your writing. I'd really encourage you to go to the Album of the Week forum because that will give you many chances to hone your writing/reviewing skills, provided you have the records that have been or will be selected. And I second Jim's comments that you have uncommon taste for a 19 year old.
  21. Why are you here, Geoff? To talk with us or to us? You might get a conversation started if you try to talk with us instead of at us.
  22. Is that, like, a really nice, big butt? Or is that butte?
  23. Perhaps you are right, Jim. There wasn't real disinformation, though the comment about the European thing in the drumming leaves open the possibility there's something to the suggestion. But are impressions necessary of music you yourself created? You were basically giving props to yourself. Not that they aren't earned, mind you. Personally, I'm the last guy to critique my own voice over performances-I always concentrate on the areas I think are weak, or where I can tell I was running out of breath, or my voice wavered or a momentary something where I don't think I was in the moment anymore. Guess that's a difference between gigs that are creative but, at heart, commerce, and gigs that are just purely creative.
  24. Sorry to interrupt this discussion, but here're my random reactions to the answers: #2- Well, what can I say, I am now zero for two when a Mosaic cut that I own is used on a BFT. ARGH! #3 - This cut definitely pushes me more towards the Elvin Mosaic. I've hesitated due at least partially to the era, tempered a bit by the fact that the LP with Morgan is the only one of his I have yet to hear, so its something I need to get on, and this track tells me there's other good stuff here, too, so thanks John for opening my eyes to that. #5 - Well, now I can say that I've heard Jim's playing, and I am certainly impressed. However, I do not find Jim's post regarding his own track (in the discussion thread) to be just a bit of fun. I'm sorry, but I do not. I think that it violates the spirit of the blindfold test and the joint discussion/debate/figgurin' out that takes place in the discussion thread. Its been said over and over again, if you know what it is, just say that you do or post a link. That doesn't mean that you should put up disinformation as a joke. Maybe I am overstating it, but personally I don't think it was right. Jim should have simply said, 'I have this one." My two cents, fwiw. #6 & #15 - Lucky and Art Pepper are two guys I have slept on and that clearly must come to an end soon! And finally, #7 - I said that I "wonder if its Slide Hampton, but the instrumentation doesn't match his latest" or words to that effect, so I am simply going to close by saying "Wooo Hooo!! I don't care if it was a lucky guess, I got one!!!!!" Thanks again John for an enjoyable disc, all things considered.
