  1. If we can get back to length, I think there should be an explicit limitation of two CDs. I mean, saying that you should consider your audience is fine and dandy but I can imagine someone going overboard and getting out of control and I'm sorry that is just too much to impose on people. In fact, I sincerely hope that two disc sets don't become the norm because I suspect that participation may start to decline if people find it difficult to devote sufficient time to multi-volume BFTs.
  2. True, Brad! Just as deadlines focus the mind, space limitations make the compiler focus his attention on the very best/most important tracks.
  3. I haven't shared this with my wife yet (I think you need to have wills drawn up before you talk about funeral issues!) but the former Gene Harris Fanatic has thought a bit about this and I think an excellent choice would be Gene Harris "Blues For Ste Chappelle" Audio Clip Here I don't want something slow and sad, this is a nice uptempo, uplifting, "happy" blues that I think would bring a smile to people's faces. Its also short, under five minutes, so its not likely to bore the crowd. Another option would be any of a number of Gene's performances of "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" though that would bring Christianity into a non-Christian service.
  4. Brad, I was also going to reopen the discussion of quantity of music. We've now had two double disc tests and I think its an open question whether this has turned out to be a manageable amount of music, both for the process of listening and evaluating as well as the question of keeping track of what tune is being discussed when there are so many "in play".
  5. If you are going to insist on "favourite" then I think there should be a nod toward American spellings with "disc".
  6. John, You did a fine job, I would clarify a few things though: On the issue of what music is fair game, I would not say that it is truly "anything goes" but rather that people have chosen music tangentially related to jazz in addition to recognized jazz styles. In other words, we don't want someone to program speed metal, right? Well, "anything goes" suggests that speed metal is just fine, and I'm reasonably confident that the consensus of the board would not agree. On the issue of when a new BFT should be shipped, I think its fine to say that the discussion of answers should be underway, but a sentence about allowing for postal time from the States to Europe and vice versa is a good idea. In general, discs shipped overseas should go one week before inter-State or European discs should ship. Oh, and one other thing, you should know that "favorite" is not spelled with a "u". Other than that, great job! With those minor changes, we just need to get B3-er to post the message, preferably (I think) the same way that the Political Forum Rules are displayed, above the thread list as a separate link, though of course it could just be pinned, although there are a lot of pinned items already.
  7. Given that its a private label pressing, it seems likely no one would know who he was.
  8. I've always upgraded from vinyl to CD, but recently I spotted a pretty nice copy of Don Wilkerson's Shoutin' and began to wonder about it, even though I have the TOCJ. I also came close to rationalizing a purchase due to its potential resale value, but that was kind of iffy due to the fairly high price the shop wanted. It was VG to VG+, they wanted $25 for it. Of course, if I hadn't had the CD I'd have snatched it in a heartbeat.
  9. Well, I owe a review of Disc 2, and I'll be brief. There is not a single track on the disc that I would venture a guess or voluntarily play again. The appeal of some of this music is so far beyond me that I do not believe that even the Crossing Over dude could make a connection. I calls 'em as I sees 'em.
  10. Is your wife likely to select a lot of your collection for her own personal listening pleasure, or for that matter as a tangible reminder of you and your passion for jazz? Why are you limiting your children to 50 recordings? If you are seriously concerned about dumping your collection, well, what is to keep your wife or kids from grabbing the music and selling it? It sounds to me like you ought to stick with the library/radio station where at least it won't be "sold cheap".
  11. Too bad Janet went with the starburst instead of this one: B)
  12. Very sorry to hear, Tom.
  13. That's hardly the only place she's pierced, but she would have to have a really major wardrobe failure before you'd see that piercing. I won't tell you what she's said about the "effects" of that type of piercing.
  14. Glad to know me and Greg was the first battle you thought of.
  15. Hey, at least Kermit is still Kermit. What if they took Miss Piggy, turned her into Liz Taylor and did a "Behind the Muppets" episode?
  16. I don't know, I liked the post-modern element of Kermit commentary. And some of those episodes are quite amusing, until we get to the hair bands of the 80s, at least.
  17. I agree with Ralphie except that the TOCJ doesn't sound quite so good as most TOCJs, at least to me. But a great session, and good to hear Dizzy with rhythm.
  18. I am asking myself the same question right now! Very sorry Dan, I must have been out of my mind and totally misread your post! Please accept my apologies! Of course. B)
  19. Very sorry to hear the news, Tom. Keep hanging in there, and know that you remain in our thoughts.
  20. My one question would be, was it intentional to record this "Disc at Once" so that the tunes butt up against each other? I didn't sense a lot of great segues, so I am curious if this was intentional and if so, why. On to the music, at least for Disc 1. I think I can post now that my headache has calmed down a bit. Yes, for the most part, that's what disc 1 was-headache inducing. Sorry, but its true. Track 01 - breakneck bebop big band. Don't hear Dizzy so I'm pretty clueless. Didn't grab me anyway. 02 - I'm thinking '70s recording, the trumpeter might be Hubbard? Have to admit, I hated the tenor. 03 - No clue, at first I didn't think it was Hutcherson, then the solo made me wonder if it was him. I liked the vibes the best. 04-05: Thank you, but NO. 06 - Song did nothing for me. Singers did less. 07 - Finally! The fastest gun and his ode to the ladies. I've really become a fan of his playing. 08 - See #4. 09 - Gotta be Hodges. 10 - Coltrane. OK but far from my favorite ballad of his. 11 - See #4. Will try to give disc 2 a listen tomorrow.
  21. Really really weird. I had no trouble from work today but now I am home and when I tried to get to the board through netscape, I got the same trouble that everyone else is reporting. Can't find the site, and when I tried that alternative link someone posted at AAJ, I could "see" but I couldn't log in and couldn't enter the board through the usual links. So how am I here now? Well, I decided to try using IE instead of Netscape, and guess what? It worked! Really really weird. And the annoying thing is, the reason we use netscape at home is that for some reason, IE would trigger a login error on Hotmail, so we use Netscape just because we get into our e-mail that way. Now, unless this gets fixed, I guess its Netscape for everything else, IE for Organissimo!
  22. Well, I like the Pats but they aren't "my" team. But I am now hopeful that New England will, by November, be home of the baseball AND football champions!
  23. Huh? I'm not nominating myself, I am seconding Jim Dye's nomination, because he helped in distribution for me (and I didn't even ask), Jim R. and couw's tests, and maybe Sangrey's too. Where did you get the idea that I wanted to do it?
  24. I think Jim should absolutely be allowed to step in and do #8, because he's been an integral part of the distribution process for several of these, including spontaneous, voluntary, after-the-fact help for my disc. But Jim, you're going to have to handle distribution all by yourself.
