  1. I agree with Ralphie except that the TOCJ doesn't sound quite so good as most TOCJs, at least to me. But a great session, and good to hear Dizzy with rhythm.
  2. I am asking myself the same question right now! Very sorry Dan, I must have been out of my mind and totally misread your post! Please accept my apologies! Of course. B)
  3. Very sorry to hear the news, Tom. Keep hanging in there, and know that you remain in our thoughts.
  4. My one question would be, was it intentional to record this "Disc at Once" so that the tunes butt up against each other? I didn't sense a lot of great segues, so I am curious if this was intentional and if so, why. On to the music, at least for Disc 1. I think I can post now that my headache has calmed down a bit. Yes, for the most part, that's what disc 1 was-headache inducing. Sorry, but its true. Track 01 - breakneck bebop big band. Don't hear Dizzy so I'm pretty clueless. Didn't grab me anyway. 02 - I'm thinking '70s recording, the trumpeter might be Hubbard? Have to admit, I hated the tenor. 03 - No clue, at first I didn't think it was Hutcherson, then the solo made me wonder if it was him. I liked the vibes the best. 04-05: Thank you, but NO. 06 - Song did nothing for me. Singers did less. 07 - Finally! The fastest gun and his ode to the ladies. I've really become a fan of his playing. 08 - See #4. 09 - Gotta be Hodges. 10 - Coltrane. OK but far from my favorite ballad of his. 11 - See #4. Will try to give disc 2 a listen tomorrow.
  5. Really really weird. I had no trouble from work today but now I am home and when I tried to get to the board through netscape, I got the same trouble that everyone else is reporting. Can't find the site, and when I tried that alternative link someone posted at AAJ, I could "see" but I couldn't log in and couldn't enter the board through the usual links. So how am I here now? Well, I decided to try using IE instead of Netscape, and guess what? It worked! Really really weird. And the annoying thing is, the reason we use netscape at home is that for some reason, IE would trigger a login error on Hotmail, so we use Netscape just because we get into our e-mail that way. Now, unless this gets fixed, I guess its Netscape for everything else, IE for Organissimo!
  6. Well, I like the Pats but they aren't "my" team. But I am now hopeful that New England will, by November, be home of the baseball AND football champions!
  7. Huh? I'm not nominating myself, I am seconding Jim Dye's nomination, because he helped in distribution for me (and I didn't even ask), Jim R. and couw's tests, and maybe Sangrey's too. Where did you get the idea that I wanted to do it?
  8. I think Jim should absolutely be allowed to step in and do #8, because he's been an integral part of the distribution process for several of these, including spontaneous, voluntary, after-the-fact help for my disc. But Jim, you're going to have to handle distribution all by yourself.
  9. As for the boob, I missed it live so I had no clue what had happened til I logged on this morning. Watching Berigan's quicktime file, there is no doubt whatsoever this was planned from the start, the ridiculous apologies notwithstanding. I mean, are we supposed to believe that Justin was trying to get a cheap feel in front of 120 million people? And what about the last line of the song, "I'll have you naked by the end of this song"??? I can't believe Timberlake is taking the fall for this. And, don't tell me CBS pulled away in a big hurry-they had to pull away for the big pyro at the very end, they never intended to linger on Janet, boob or no boob. And last but not least, why was Janet wearing a star-shaped pasty on her nipple, if she didn't know in advance she would be exposed for a second? Its just like that other musical ho, the one who showed up at the Grammy's with her boob entirely exposed but covered with a larger pasty. Have you seen the clip of Diana Ross and her onstage to present an award, and Miss Diana actually felt her up with a look that said, "Girl, what the hell is this?" Same thing-I am sure that was part of their inspiration. As for the game, definitely one of the best ever. What I can't figure out is, where the hell did the defenses go? The way it started, I honestly wondered whether it woud go to overtime tied at zero. Then 60 points get scored in the last 33 minutes. And as for "personality" I couldn't care less. You want personality, follow the pathetic Raiders or Dolphins, or those clowns making cel phone calls after touchdowns. I'd much rather watch a team that doesn't strut and just takes care of business.
  10. Ideally, Man should be ready to move ahead, and Chuck should give an idea of when he believes he will be ready to do the disc-two months or a year or what? Then Mike Weil can adjust the master list approximately. If Man can't move forward, then I'd say its up to the next person after him, and so on, on the assumption that people who are on the shortlist are already moving forward with their comps.
  11. Interesting article in today's Times about Superbowl halftime shows and the changes thereto. Did y'all know that Superbowl VI featured Ella Fitzgerald (along with Carol Channing, Al Hirt and US Marine Corps Drill team) In Superbowl VII, haltime featured Woody Herman (and the Michigan band). Superbowl IX featured Mercer Ellington (and the Grambling band.) And the one that's really got me curious is Superbowl XXIII: "Be Bop Bamboozled" What the heck was that?????
  12. "cute"? Are we looking at the same girl?
  13. In a way, its not surprising. Cedar is an excellent, excellent mainstream musician and a tremendous composer. But I'm afraid he slips under a lot of people's radar, perhaps because he's so consistently good, but maybe too smooth and predictable, and certainly not "revolutionary". I've seen him twice, with Smilin' Billy Higgins, Ralph Moore and the rest of Eastern Rebellion. Hope I'll see him again, and when I head out to my car, I'll take special note of the disc that I have in the car stereo today: a radio broadcast of Eastern Rebellion from 1992 at the Regattabar.
  14. I'll bet Cliff Claven could play triangle!
  15. I ordered this from Cadence last month. Real nice with some excellent organ from the leader. Home-produced, apparently, it was reviewed in their "CDR" section which carries a disclaimer about lower quality control standards. But a nice date, for sure.
  16. Jim makes an excellent point. By the time of Tippin' On through, Curtis had definitely evolved from his meat and potatos texas tenor sax/organ sound. This is a great set, and aside from his Verve one-off and a set for Freshsound in the mid-90s, all that Curtis got to record as a leader. I hunted down each of these PJ recordings, but I'm glad to have gotten the Select from Santa Claus.
  17. Hang in there, Tom, and know that a lot of people here are thinking of you and your family, and like Joe said, we'll be here to lift your spirits a bit when you are back online.
  18. How about an artist with a jazz pedigree? Here's some of vocalist Meredith D'Ambrosio's work: Peggy's Cove Autumn in New Boston Elm Street Blizzard And last but not least, a portrait of her husband, Eddie Higgins, based on a photo of Eddie as a young boy of about 11, and used for the CD cover: More of Meredith's work can be found at: http://www.meredithdambrosio.com
  19. Jim's probably write about a snoozer game. I saw a breakdown which showed that almost all of the non-competitive games had two weeks between the playoffs and the big game, and most of the really great games had no week off.
  20. Well, its true I didn't look at the start date, I just considered the fact that one was on the first page and the second one on the second page and assumed it was "older". As for "netiquette" I don't think it matters, I'm just saying that Geoff hasn't favored us with new stuff, he's just giving us reprints. We want NEW reviews!!! Geoff, you can start with the board owner's disc, Waiting For the Boogaloo Sisters!
  21. Gotta go with Blue. I mean, if electric companies have programs to cut you some slack and keep the electricity on, they ought to be understanding if the electric bill $$ goes to a soon-to-be OOP Mosaic set, right?
  22. You're not kidding, Hans! Not only is Geoff recycling posts from other sites, but he actually apparently borrowed the whole idea from an earlier post on the same forum: People's Guide to Undervalued Jazz (and not only albums) But maybe the I Hate Music forum has cool guys to hang with. The author of that original thread is ... "cunnilingus"
  23. I have to go with New England for their defense, but the way Carolina has played they might just complete the Cindarella Season. But what I really have to hope for is that the Pats knock out the Carolina QB, cause if I am not mistaken, the backup is former Seminole and Heisman winner Chris Weinke, and if he comes in to the game than my allegiance will have to switch immediately.
  24. Geoff, Seeing as you've favored other discussion boards, may I request that you start the same "Ask Geoff a Question about Jazz" thread here?
