Funny how you use the same construction as I did: X number of wins and added players A, B, C. But you ignore the fact that the Sox added four top notch players and lost essentially no one, while the Yanks added all-stars and all-universes but also lost their best post-season pitcher and two hall of famers (OK, its the drunk hall of fame, but still) and replaced them with: Brown: One GM said the likelihood he makes 25 starts is zero. Leiber: Missed more than a season, will he be back at full strength and effectiveness? Then there's A-Rod and Sheffield: Right handed power hitters in a park designed for lefties. (here's my prediction: Soriano hits 50+ in Texas; A-Rod drops to 35-40. No way Sheffield hits them like he did in Atlanta-lots of long outs to Death Valley) But enough already. We'll talk in September, and perhaps there'll be another war in October.

Hopefully, this won't be a problem in 2004. UH, you might consult a calendar. Here's a hint: The next Presidential Inauguration is January 20, 2005

Its certainly true to the extent that the suggestion that the Sox are through and the Yanks can plan the victory parade is premature at minimum, and pretty ridiculous, period. We will see you in October, of that I'm confident. Why? How about because: The Red Sox won 95 games last year and they have added Schilling, Foulke, and Ellis Burks, and the only change in their everyday lineup is Pokey Reese, a Gold Glove second baseman, for Todd Walker, Mr. Good Hit, No Field. They'll also have Scott Williamson for the entire season, and BK Kim nowhere near the bullpen. The Yankees have lost 60% of their starting pitchers and over half of last year's wins. They traded away the only thing keeping Jason Giambi from 140 games at first base (other than Giambi's own knees). They've replaced their departed ace with a 39 year old who's been to the DL 7 times in three years. And they've imported three self-centered whiners, bad apples that Joe Torre has never had to deal with in the championship years. And they're replacing one aging center fielder with an even older center fielder. And last but not least, ask Ghost. The Yankees haven't won a World Series with a Republican in the White House in the Steinbrenner era. But seriously, anyone who thinks the Yanks have clinched a championship and the Sox are toast is loco.

I'm sure you're not saying that A-Rod knocks the Red Sox "into next month." See ya in October.

What do you put in your coffee??
Dan Gould replied to GregK's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
OK, I'm going to fess up and really offend all the coffee nazis here: My reason? A. I can't take it black B. I do like it hot, and milk or half and half makes it too cool too quick. Flame away. -
Having the original discs, I never bought this, but shouldn't these go Tanya Coppin The Haven?

bLiNdFoLd TeSt #7 - discussion
Dan Gould replied to Man with the Golden Arm's topic in Blindfold Test
I'm afraid this one is going to have to be short. I've given it several listens and since I wouldn't hazard a guess at any of the tracks, a blow-by-blow account doesn't seem necessary. Basically, some I dug, and some I really didn't dig. At one point I was thinking, "man, he really digs film music!" and my next thought was, "man, he really digs bongos!" I could definitely do without the vocal tracks, and my personal fav was the very blue track 19. Thanks for the comp., I look forward to the answers and another listen. -
I voted to keep it. If you click on the "Top Ten Posters" you'll see that I am perpetually stuck on the second page of that listing, and damnit, I'm gonna crack the top ten some day! And when I do, it will be without gratuitous Babe postings!

After seeing an obnoxious letter in today's NYT claiming that the Yankees will have an insurmountable lead by June, I had to see what everyone else thinks. I'm going with "Baseball Nirvana" though if forced to choose, I think #3 is more likely than the Yankees running away with it.

On Michael Howell and David "Bubba" Brooks. According to the liners, Howell is described this way: -born in KC 8 October 1943 -played with Hutch and Shaw -moved to New York in 1979 -played with Dizzy til 1985 -recorded with Blakey and Dizzy among others -continues to play and occasionally record. Sounds to me like he's stayed active rather then going into production/engineering and he went back to his roots with the Blakey and Dizzy gigs and certainly for this recording with the elder brother of Tina Brooks.

Jazz Special / Denmark
Dan Gould replied to Jim R's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Jim, I have also enjoyed that publication with my Stateside orders. There was an excellent remembrance of Ben Webster's European years in a prior issue, and other nice articles. I may be wrong, but I wonder if Peter includes the publication hoping to increase orders of the Stunt label which he now carries. If I recall correctly, there's a nice Johnny Griffin CD called with The Great Danes which I never would have been aware of til I saw it in that magazine; I think another one was a Scandinavian piano trio that got Eric Alexander to guest on their disc, another winner in my book. I see Chuck is here right now, so I bet he'll tell me my book is all wrong. -
I always do this, Ray, even on the discs that I had the hardest time with, I print out the comments of the moderator and give it another go. Didn't make Sangrey's or Randy's disc go down any easier but at least I gave them another try!

Menza Calls It Quits
Dan Gould replied to Dr. Rat's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I think this post will get me to finally take the time to give a listen to his Palo Alto LP, Hip Pocket, I found up north at Christmas time. -
With some of the guys here, If I had a combined guest room/music room, I'd take inventory before & after someone visits! Seriously, good luck on the big move.

Sad but not surprising. But ya gotta love this Wynton reviewer:

Happy birthday to Alan, along with the thanks of a jazz fan grateful for his comprehensive compendium of upcoming releases!

I'm in, Jim, and you can make mine a DOUBLE! Only thing is, we're not long for Coconut Creek, so I'm going to give you my work address. BIG NEWS is a brewin'!

I'm pretty sure it was the third word in Mr. Carlin's list.

I'd be interested to hear your impressions after your return.

In other words, were he here, Terry Bradshaw would be out on his ass too.

One more suggestion, Chuck, for your dining pleasure. Assuming that you and your bride are steak eaters, I heartily recommend a place called A. Carrolls. Its very close by the campus of William & Mary. Best steaks I've ever had, excellent side dishes, too. But not cheap! But if you feel like splurging for one meal, you'd be hard-pressed to top it.

Which is the filthiest key on your keyboard?
Dan Gould replied to rockefeller center's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
You can get a spanish N anytime you want: ALT + 165 Ñ yeah, but is it filthy? No, it´s the Actually, I think î is. Or maybe that's the most sexual, not the most sensual. Kind of the difference between Lady Chatterly's Lover and Debbie Does Dallas. -

Jim: I can't deal with my scanner-either the image is too big or it gets saved as a type that won't upload. Totally annoying. Anyway, I'll e-mail the scan to you so you can at least see it. In the meantime, may I ask where the KB/Grant/Kessell picture came from? That's a concert I'd have wanted to attend!
