  1. After thinking about it some more, I think it should be up to the individual compiler. I might end up liking the idea of not having to trim so much to get to 8 or ten. But at the same time, we should bear in mind the "fatigue" factor and the possibility that 80 minutes of tunes you don't know might be too much. We don't want people turning in incomplete exams because they got bored, turned off, or just plain P.O.'d!
  2. Presented with such an obnoxious yet extremely dubious threat, I'd say you did do the right thing, Jim. Nevertheless, I'd be interested to see her response should you receive one. And for what its worth, its clear that this is an American company since they have an 800 number, so American copyright law would control. In fact, looking at the regular phone number listed, she's right here in my state of Florida, might very well be in my old college town of Tallahassee, as 850 is the area code for the Florida panhandle.
  3. Rooster, I understand your point, but I think in keeping with the standard for DB blindfold tests, I think 8 or ten is good. Not that I couldn't fill up a disc, but it might also make it tougher to maintain a consistent theme, unless the theme is a particular instrument or something. But if its "covers of Beatles tunes" that might not work so well.
  4. Looks good from here. I would just add that if people want to start PMing me now, that's fine. Depending on participation, I may ask some people to assist by sending out copies of their copies, and I would like to have a single person on the other side of the pond to handle European distribution. One thing we may want to consider is how fast the rotation should be. I'm thinking that I will send out my blindfold test around the time that we start to discuss Dr. J's. Looking forward to this!
  5. OK, Rooster, you asked! But since my spots have almost all run in Florida, with one recent spot in LA and a couple in Detroit, Milwaukee, I kind of doubt you've heard me. For a Real Audio copy of my Demo, click Here and I'm about halfway down the page. For an MP3 copy of my Demo, click here then choose "Chapter 3" and I am at the top of the page. I'm told this demo could get me work in New York City, but I'm not yet prepared to test that out.
  6. Well, I got the John Anderson LP yesterday, and Brownie is right, its got a very nice, swinging, Gerald Wilson feel to it. So thanks Brownie for the recommendation, I'm glad I pulled the trigger on this one.
  7. Thanks Dmitry. I had to search ebay to find just what it is, because I was pretty sure it wasn't Bill Dowdy in the back, turns out its Jimmy Smith's old compadre, Donald Bailey. Don't think I'll be bidding on this, but I did find something I might go for:
  8. I know we did the long "introductory" thread, but I'm curious about the different career paths people have taken, from earliest interests to where they're currently at and the path that got them there. For me: I don't recall any "dream" profession when I was a kid but I was always interested in the physical sciences, geology, astronomy and ultimately meteorology. When Calculus II sunk my meteorology career, I latched onto Political Science and pursued a Ph.D. with an eye toward college teaching. Then I found myself managing a tennis shop for two years, but really just treading water, until I found my true calling, using my God-given vocal qualities to pursue voice overs. There was a two and a half year detour into radio but now I'm committed to voice overs and am fortunate to have a regular gig in audio production/voice overs for a web-based English as a Second Language company. So what about you? What're you doing now, and how did you get to that stage in your life?
  9. Interesting ... wasn't it that Bistro cd that some hack-in-training college "journalist" wrote a nasty review to which Malone went ballistic (and extremely crude) on her? FWIW, I dug that CD too, and really enjoyed Benny about a year ago when he performed in West Palm Beach.
  10. Those who know me in my prior incarnation on that defunct BB know my answer.
  11. I *love* Lush Life, a beautiful and unique entry in LDs discography. Great arrangements and LD's beautiful tone caressing classic melodies. Maybe not 5 stars, but 4 or 4.5, easily!
  12. Hey, I said I "acknowledged" your greater apparent knowledge-didn't say I "accept" it!
  13. OK, so if every team took 12 hours to make a decision, that would be like 13 days from "placed on waivers" to 'cleared waivers'? I acknowledge your greater apparent knowledge, it just seems odd and I would think that if this were happening it would definitely be common knowledge by now.
  14. So, will we be able to *listen* to your show on the web?
  15. Only if you continue to put up more and more cash, Moose. Then, despite the tracking number he'll give you, the cylinder will disappear en route. Please, don't be taken in like I was!
  16. Yes, Ubu, it is in the Mosaic. Hopefully someone will jump in and confirm that AMG is wrong about some of the composition credits on the album, I am 99% sure that Herbie wrote at least one of the finger-poppin hard bop tunes on there.
  17. Except that it was Herbie's debut as a leader, not Dexter's album. There are a couple of real nice tunes on the album he made before Takin' Off, on Donald Byrd's Royal Flush. I just checked AMG and it credits Byrd with all of the originals except for Hancock's "Requiem" but I coould have sworn at least one of those other tune's was Herbie's. Anyway, excellent early music, almost as catchy as "Watermelon Man".
  18. Well, my question then would be, why isn't it public knowledge among "insiders" like Stark? I haven't gone to re-read the article, but he basically says that there are "more to come". If its SOP to put everyone through waivers so soon after the deadline, why doesn't he just say that?
  19. Not according to Jason Stark's ESPN.com column of last Thursday or Friday. A number of people have cleared waivers, but to say "almost every" player has is not accurate. Not saying that a whole heckuva lot of players *will* clear waivers before September 1 (the deadline for post-season rosters) but they haven't all cleared waivers. Not even close.
  20. I had no idea he was sick ... very sad news. RIP.
  21. Hi Gary, Welcome to the board, and sorry to hear of your troubles. At least I can tell you I didn't get any off-the-wall messages from you recently. Hope you can stick around The Former Gene Harris Fantatic
  22. Bad news, Marcus, I'm afraid. I went to both locations and either I was mistaken or they got cleaned out, but neither one had any Blacknote CDs left. I guess your best bet is CD Baby, at least you can get one CD at a reasonable price.
  23. Speaking of movies that freaked people out, sometime in the early '70s-I think I was 7 or 8, Night of the Living Dead was on TV. I only got through to the cemetary scene when the zombie goes after the brother and the sister barely escapes ... but I didn't know that at that time because "there coming to get you, Barbara" freaked me out so bad that I not only had nightmares, I didn't even see the entire film for almost 20 years after!
  24. Come to Palm Beach, Florida then! 90 degrees or so ... 'cept that a tornado touched down yesterday and destroyed or damaged about 500 homes.
