  1. That's an interesting looking one. I'll definitely check it out.
  2. Thanks both for the article and insight. I am never sure whether I really like those records. What prompted me to ask was really the strange way that Bowie is featured. The records seem to move between the Milosc sections and the Bowie sections. Each excellent but not necessarily communicating. On the Gdynia one Bowie is almost a capella most of the time. It seems like a strange mix. On earning opportunities, I wasn’t paying attention at the time, but I’d assumed the AEC was big news at that point and could easily sell out venues. For anyone who hasn’t heard of Milosc by the way I would recommend their non-Bowie records. Part of the wider trends in jazz in the postmodernism period, but there’s a good core of playing and songwriting there,p. Same for some of their other peers in their micro scene.
  3. In the 1990s, Lester Bowie recorded around three records with Milosc, a Polish band that was part of the (in my view underrated if potentially annoying) "Yass" scene. I don't think any of them are really classics, but it is surprising that he collaborated with them to such an extent. I'm not aware of any "Poland" section of the biographies of Bowie (contrast to Paris, Jamaica or Nigeria). Does anyone know what lay behind the relationship and why so many records were released?
  4. Look, it was indoors. I was able to wear a tee shirt. Chicago is, it turns out, very cold. Have some mercy. Good gig. A different feel to your average Wednesday night OTO crowd or my comparatively limited NY experiences.
  5. I haven't brought a hat with me. I'm not convinced I would have survived.
  6. Oh cool. I'd missed that. I'm really excited to be going. For some reason he doesn't come by London much and I haven't seen him before. Also, fun to see a gig in a new city. Even with this sleet and wind.
  7. Going to see Rempis' Ballister at Constellation in Chicago tonight, with thanks to @Chuck Nessa for flagging the venue.
  8. Excellent. Rempis is on at Constellation on a night I may be able to attend.
  9. Sandy Brown's Jazz Band – McJazz
  10. Milford Graves and Don Pullen - Nommo
  11. What an oddly effusive article. Most of these statues that are pictured look like hackwork.
  12. Hopefully they can get their own waterfall too, soon.
  13. Flying on Sunday so if anyone has any other recommendations I'd be grateful to know.
  14. I'm the opposing side. I am an anti-Otomoist. I always found him to be dilettenteish. I saw him play once in Exeter and he was a total smug waste of time. That normally includes his jazz output too for me (including the Out To Lunch concept record), but this one I do really like. It has quite a unique interplay.
  15. Now streaming: Sue Kaspar's fusion soundtrack to the video game Sim City 2000 https://youtu.be/q4gkAcj7GhU?si=wrNtQq47sJ5X_bsa
  16. Otomo Yoshihide's New Jazz Quintet / ONJQ - Live In Lisbon
  17. One of the most unique guitar styles out there.
  18. Grover Washington - Wine Light
  19. Travis Reuter - Quintet Music
  20. Jonah Jones - Jonah's Wail A super comp with sides recorded with Bechet. Good lusty stuff.
  21. Tino Tracanna and Paolino Dalla Porta – Nudes
  22. I think the Sanders ones are much better but I never listen to them. I think this is precisely what I am raising issues about. There are points on that record when the line does appear to collapse to my ear. It is like if i am reading aloud and I run out of breath mid word or falter, and need to rally before proceeding.
  23. I’m not a musician but it doesn’t always sound controlled or intentional to my ears. I mentioned above that one that which is particularly creaky.
  24. Archie Shepp - Blue Ballads I really struggle with this period of Shepp. He seems to run out of breath quite a lot and there's a samba version of "If I Should Lose You" where he doesn't seem to be able to control his horn. Maybe it is on purpose.
