Bobby, I'm flattered that you are interested in my opinion! Thank you! Here on this board, we refer to an old fashioned funk organ trio as greazy. I don't find your playing to be like that. I find the chords that you choose and the brittleness of your sound to be a terrific balance to what others are doing. My favorite example of that is Sonny Rollins' Vienne DVD. You were the perfect yin to the yang of the rest of that band. On Upper West Side Story there's no yang. There's no Clifford Anderson or Chris Foreman to provide the contrast that highlights your work and makes it so interesting. Your past records have had the appeal of sweet and sour pork, but that's not the case this time. In regard to dryness, one great that I have not heard enough of is Lennie Tristano. Perhaps you are aware of a song Chet Baker recorded with Richard Twardzik called The Girl from Greenland. I love that dry sound, and I love what you're doing too, but I think that one has to be in the proper mood for it when it's all by itself. Best wishes, and congratulations on your success thus far, Russell Moon

The Als are signing McMaster QB Kyle Quinlan. Last year the only Canadian QB to survive the cuts was Calgary's Brad Sinopoli. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/mcmaster-qb-quinlan-agrees-to-cfl-contract-report/article2425630/

I got the promo copy of this one in the mail on Thursday, and opened it up right away. All nine songs were written by Broom. I find Broom to be very dry. When he is playing popular songs, he contributes to me a new perspective on familiar pieces, and I like it. When he is playing with the Deep Blue Organ Trio, I find that his dryness goes well with the soulfulness of Chris Foreman's organ. Same with his recordings with Sonny Rollins. But here, with just the guitar, bass and drums and original compositions, the result is dryness without something to balance it out. The songs are good and the playing is good, but the result is more extreme than any other Broom album I have. I'm sure I'll be listening to this often, but I wouldn't want a library full of records like this. You've got to be in the mood for this one.

Thanks for verifying my hazy recollection, TTK! As I vaguely recall, I got two 99 cent Nelson Riddle cassettes, both Capitol/EMI issues, about the same time around 1990. One of them was called something like "Nelson Riddle Plays Classic TV Themes", so I'm betting that that was the one it was on.

The Orioles beat the Red Sox today 9-6. This was the first game since 1925 in which both teams had a position player pitch. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/baseball/designated-hitter-chris-davis-pitches-orioles-to-extra-innings-victory/article2424495/

It's a standard, something like "Somewhere in the Night". I have Nelson Riddle doing it on a 99 cent cassette tape I got twenty years ago.

The Bombers have released Joe Lobendahn. He tore his ACL last year, so he is probably through. http://tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=395256 ***** The Als have released Kerry Carter. http://tsn.ca/cfl/story/?id=395150 ***** If you click on the photo, you can see the Eskimos' new look road jerseys. Draft Day is tomorrow. Here's the best article I've found about it. The NFL drafted three guys who were eligible for the CFL draft, and signed another two undrafted players immediately after. So their stock will decline in the draft. When a player is drafted, that CFL team owns his rights forever, I believe. There have been so many CFL first rounders who didn't pan out that I don't care too much about the draft. If I were a GM, I'd probably go with linemen. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/roughriders-have-tough-decision-to-make/article2420680/

Lots of news today. They are tight and moisture-wicking. Should be harder to grab. The only new design I've noticed is the Bombers', who will have gold sweaters instead of white ones.
