  1. I imagine that relatively few folks will give jazz much of a chance if they don't like the first album they buy, so those lists are of some value. My objection to them is that pretty much all of them are made up of the usual suspects, and the usual suspects aren't among my favorites.
  2. Yes, I was thinking of that one. I guess that is universally considered his least popular album. It's funny, I've always remembered that one because his middle name is on the cover, but the title has never sunk in.
  3. Nate, that doesn't ring a bell. What's its name?
  4. I received a promo of a new album that might interest some here. Laurie Antonioli is a singer who has spent the past twenty years in Europe, so maybe some of you Yurpeens are familiar with her. She made a duo album with Richie Beirach in 2005, and I think that this album American Dreams is her first one since. I have mixed feelings about it. I like her voice a lot. And I like the musicians here. But I don't like half the songs. I find them interesting but not enjoyable. It's as if she was more interested in making an album that was different to stand out in the crowd than to make one that was likeable. I have found the CD at both Amazon and CDBaby, but unfortunately the samples are so brief that you can't hear enough of each melody to see what I mean when I say they are interesting and different. Too bad Lala is no longer with us to sample the album. Anybody here familiar with her?
  5. I vote against Italy and France, which I rate as my worst Monk albums. If someone would like to suggest a Monk album he thinks is worse, I would be curious.
  6. David, you're probably right, but since this thread is started I'll continue it. Steve Tibbetts - Natural Causes This isn't my idea of jazz. I would call it New Age. Accoustic guitar, with early tracks sounding Oriental. Very mild background music.
  7. Buck Pierce's right knee is sprained, so he will miss this week's game against the Eskimos. Stephen Jyles will start in his place. http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Football/CFL/Winnipeg/2010/07/18/14750646.html
  8. Saskatchewan Roughriders 24....Edmonton Eskimos 20 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W843.htm The Eskimos led for most of the game, and led 20-13 after three in what was a defense-dominated game. But Edmonton has yet to score a point in the fourth quarter this year. This was the NFL Network's game of the week. Next week's game will be the Eskimos against the Bombers. Saskatchewan remains undefeated, while Edmonton remains winless.
  9. What? You mean you don't think I write like James Joyce?
  10. I put in part of a letter I wrote to an old friend, and I got James Joyce!
  11. Happy Birthday 2010 JL!
  12. Montreal Alouettes 16....British Columbia Lions 12 Defensive struggle. The Als came from behind in the fourth to win it. The Als had lost nine straight in Vancouver, not winning since 2000. Much was made last year of the fact that the Lions never lose at home to the eastern teams, and the view was that since the Lions play their games at night, the eastern guys' body clocks feel like it is one in the morning during the fourth quarter. So the Als played last week in Edmonton, and spent the entire week there with only one practice, presumably so that their body clocks would adjust to western time.
  13. Hungry, boys and girls? Announcing for your consumption....Fantuz Flakes! http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/riding-to-the-top/article1643305/ Didn't the Green Bay Packers announce a profit of $5 million when they released their figures the other day? And the Riders made $3 million?
  14. Hamilton Tiger-Cats 28....Winnipeg Blue Bombers 7 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W841.htm The Ticats dominated from start to finish, for their first win of the season. Buck Pierce limped off the field late in the third quarter, and was replaced by Stephen Jyles for the rest of the game. I think everyone has been waiting for Pierce to be lost with another concussion, so we'll see if he recovers quickly from this leg injury. What's the matter with Sandro DeAngelis? He missed two FGs tonight. I think he missed two last week, and I don't remember how many the first game. He's got to be the biggest disappointment in the league so far. As noted, Marcus Thigpen has scored a TD four different ways. In the history of the league (they started keeping records in the East in 1954), nobody has scored a TD five ways in a season. He didn't score tonight, but you can bet that the Ticats will plan to give him the ball close to the end zone so that he can score by rushing and set the record.
  15. I got David Foster Wallace too. I've never heard of him before.
  16. I have received promos of seven new ECM releases, so I thought I would start a thread about them with a comment or two. Manu Katche - Third Round I really liked Katche's last album Playground, and looked forward to this. I find that it is not as exciting, quieter overall. I keep the CDs I've opened in the past twelve months separate from the remainder of my collection, and I've been listening to them for the past two weeks. I don't think that Third Round is as good as Playground, but I do think that it is among the best I've gotten in the past year. ***** Terje Rypdal - Crime Scene Some of the tracks are loud and rock-influenced, while many are quiet in comparison. Crime Scene is unlike the few other Rypdal albums I have - he is accompanied by a big band with a lot of brass. I find myself exhausted when the album is over. ***** Ketil Bjornstad - Remembrance Other than the Keith Jarrett albums, this is about as mainstream as ECM gets. I like it. Sax, piano and drums. Why didn't they include a bass? ***** I'll post regarding the other four when I get to them.

  18. Happy Birthday 2010 Tom!
  19. Vocal "cords", surely. LOL! Thanks, Ted! In fact, I typed "cords" and changed it because it didn't look right.
  20. Toronto Argonauts 27....Calgary Stampeders 24 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W840.htm Both teams suffered greatly from the short week. The Argos in the first half and the Stamps in the third quarter had the chance to put the game away and failed to do so. Still, it was exciting to see the Argos come back in the fourth after being down 24-13.
  21. It wouldn't bother me if Congress passed a law prohibiting the sale of composer royalties.
  22. I'm reminded of The Twilight Zone episode where the guy had his vocal chords cut to win a bet that he could go without speaking.
  23. This week's games start tonight, with the Stampeders playing the Argos. ***** David Naylor Week 3 picks http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/cfl-week-3-picks/article1639512/ ***** Gregg Xenakes Week 3 picks: http://www.sportsnetwork.com/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=sportsnetwork&page=/cfl/news/AJN4326119.htm ***** Matt Flowers West Report: http://64.246.64.33/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=sportsnetwork&page=cfl/news/news.aspx?id=4326202
  24. Ted, I don't know what you have in mind. I've looked up nauseous at dictionary.com, and here is what it says: 1. affected with nausea; nauseated: to feel nauseous. 2. causing nausea; sickening; nauseating.
