RIP. I had a copy of Sunny when it was out in '66, and I still enjoy hearing it on the radio.

For some reason, I have always remembered Mitch smiling into the camera with that odd way of keeping time with his arms while the chorale sang "There's Going to to be a Great Day". This was about 1961. RIP I believe that Frank Sinatra felt that his tenure at Columbia was undermined by Mitch when he was made the a&r man. I read that somewhere, but I don't know the facts. I suppose that Mitch was famous for keeping rock & roll off the Columbia label. The company put it on the Epic label. I once saw Mitch on Play Your Hunch with Merv Griffin. His secret was that he was once a short order cook, and he showed how to crack an egg with one hand and drop it onto the skillet.

Darian Durant played his college ball at Chapel Hill, and there is a terrific Sports Section front page article about him and the Riders in this morning's News & Observer. http://www.newsobserver.com/2010/08/01/607421/durant-finds-a-home-in-canada.html ***** Saskatchewan Roughriders 37....Hamilton Tiger-Cats 24 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=cfl/scores/final/recap.aspx?id=850 http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/riders-topple-tiger-cats/article1658776/ The Ticats led 14-13 at the half. As always, Rider coach Ken Miller gave a brief interview before going into the locker room. He said that they had figured out how to defend against the Ticats, and he showed complete confidence that the Riders would win the game. And he was right! Luca Congi kicked 7 FGs. The league record is 8 (Dave Ridgway). This is the second consecutive week that a kicker has kicked 7 FGs against the Ticats. That tells me that the Ticat defense is bending but not breaking. Arland Bruce tied the league record for 16 catches in a game. ***** Calgary Stampeders 23....Winnipeg Blue Bombers 20 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=cfl/scores/final/recap.aspx?id=851 http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/rambo-rumbles-stamps-to-win/article1658863/ This was a late game, and I had to go to bed. Looks like I missed a good one. I went to sleep after Ken-Yon Rambo, playing in his first game in over a year, scored the game's first TD late in the first quarter.

Au contraire! I think I would need a couple of belts before considering it!

Billy Loes has died. Judging from the many times I read the quote, he was most famous for disagreeing with the common managers' demand that pitchers run a lot between starts. "I don't throw with my leg." http://bleacherreport.com/articles/427501-billy-loes-dies-at-80

Edmonton Eskimos 28....British Columbia Lions 25 http://scoreboards.canoe.ca/merge/tsnform.aspx?c=canoe&page=CFL/scores/final/W849.htm http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/eskimos-dump-lions-for-first-win/article1658411/ Good game between two bad teams. The game was stopped with three minutes to go in the first half because of lightning. Paul McCallum's consecutive FG streak was stopped at 24.

Dino Saluzzi - El Encuentro I consider this a symphonic classical album. It's enjoyable if that's your cup of tea. ***** Food - Quiet Inlet This has the unusual combination of Tangerine Dream-like electronics with ethereal horns. I enjoy the early tracks, but not so much the later ones. I really like the drumming of Thomas Stronen. In fact, I'd say that the album wouldn't be much without it.

Jack Tatum has died of a heart attack at age 61. I always thought it extraordinarily poor judgment to title his book "They Call Me Assassin", considering the circumstances. I believe that John Madden and others always said that his hit on Stingley was perfectly clean and not out of the ordinary. It was a freak accident, not the result of dirty play. http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/football/hard-hitting-former-raider-jack-tatum-dies-at-61/article1653489/

"Fab Four Jazz: the Beatles and Jazz in the 1960s"
GA Russell replied to ghost of miles's topic in Jazz Radio & Podcasts
I'll give it a listen! AccuJazz has its own Beatle Jazz station. Much of what I have heard has been later-Beatle compositions. -
