Listen to your whole collection straight through.
GA Russell replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I've never tried the alphabet approach, but each January 1 I start listening to my CDs over again. The goal is to listen to every one within the year, but it's been a few years since I've completed the list. I mark the CDs I haven't listened to at the end of the year (just an index card at the end of the row), so I can see at a glance what I have not listened to since, for example, 2001. Occasionally I'll put on one of those CDs I haven't heard since before 1/1/03, and it's invariably a disappointment - something to be gotten rid of. With the warm weather I am now playing some summer rock and roll like the Beach Boys that I haven't heard since last summer. -
I wonder how many issues were published of that mag! Even for the fifties, that sounds like an article written by a group of men enjoying martinis over lunch!

I have only one CD that is bronzed, a Caravan album. It was purchased in Canada about ten years ago, and manufactured in the EU. So far it still sounds fine. I started buying CDs in '88, and my discs from then all sound good as new. I am under the impression from discussions with friends that those old enough to have grown up with LPs treat their CDs with the same care; and those too young to have purchased many LPs have treated their CDs more roughly, not concerned about scratches. Perhaps there is something to the argument about storage and handling.

I voted for Cannonball's Bossa Nova. Sergio Mendes brought his working band from Brazil to the US in '62, just a few months after Jazz Samba was recorded. So you have Cannonball Adderley sitting in with a Brazillian bossa nova band. And it's great! I don't think I'll ever get tired of it. I prefer the bossa nova from the sixties because the music lost some of its lightness as time went on and younger musicians took up the form, from what I've heard.

Congrats! Old enough to vote! -
Skinny Lemon Lee. Well, it's easy to spell.

I'm sorry to learn of your loss, Randy. My best wishes go out to you and your family.

Just want to add that when you set off the beeper, which you did, the suspicion is not that you didn't pay for what is in your bag. The suspicion is that you have in your pocket something else you didn't pay for. That's why the procedure calls for you to reenter the store and allow your purchased items to be scanned again. If you set off the beeper the second time you try to leave, something is up! These false positives have happened to everybody. It's my opinion that the purpose of the beeper machine is to discourage kids and casual shoplifters. Without that discouragement, a store couldn't stay in business. -
What's the worst album you ever bought?

Gotta disagree with Brownie! I have a couple of Mariachi Brass albums, and like them for what they are - a knock off of the Tijuana Brass. Strictly pop music, fun not serious. My biggest disappointment was an Yngve Malmsteen record. I had read that he was a terrific guitarist, so I sprung for his latest album and it was pretty stupid. I gave it away. -
I don't think any of Cobblestone has been released on CD.

What's the best jazz autograph you have??
GA Russell replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
In 1982 I went to see Mark Murphy at the One Step Down club in DC, and he signed personalized cards for two of the women in my office. It's always good to keep the secretaries happy! Thelonious Monk signed a (clean) napkin at the Village Vanguard for me in '68. I guess that's my favorite autograph. -
How Do You Do It? by Gerry & the Pacemakers The Game of Love by Wayne Fontana and the Mindbenders Incense & Peppermint by Strawberry Alarm Clock

I received in the mail yesterday two from Concord which go on sale today. Both are compilations. One is called Cha Cha Soul, which I haven't listened to yet. All songs are latin. The other is called Mood Indigo, and is one of the Jazz Moods series. All the songs are either bluesy or melancholy. Half are vocals. A good safe gift to give to an adult whose musical tastes you aren't quite sure of.

Archie Manning wasted his career playing for the ineptly managed Saints, and I think he wanted to ensure that his sons don't waste their careers the same way. Most players don't have the guts to tell some teams that they would prefer not to play for them. If Eli is in a position where he can get away with it, congratulations I say.

I like Dena DeRose's first album for them, which I think was called Introducing... (I'll have to look it up!).

Most interesting/favorite Miles Davis (1964-68)
GA Russell replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Artists
I have the Studio Quintet box and have listened to the first four CDs. So far, my favorite album is ESP. But what interests me the most is the Plugged Nickel sessions, which I haven't heard, because it is the quintet's interpretations of songs Miles recorded with other personnel. -
Congratulations Jim!

I vote for Bobby Goldsboro's Summer the First Time. The melody is the one line repeated over and over, while the lyrics are gag-me-with-a-spoon.

I haven't heard The Trip, so I don't know how progressive it is. But I can recommend Art Pepper Today, which was his first Galaxy album. The Trip was recorded in 1976, and Today about 1979.

Moose hasn't reported back, so I enjoyed a La Luna rolled in Miami. Yum! Moose, let us know if you've got a budget left for music after this all-day exercise!

Benchley for me. I've never read any Perelman. Another thing I should add to my list of things to do! -
Wasn't Allen Sherman Camp Grenada?

The great artists you've seen live in your life?
GA Russell replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I saw most of these over thirty years ago when I was in college. Mongo Santamaria Roland Kirk Jimmy Smith Herbie Mann w/ Roy Ayers, Sonny Sharrock, Miroslav Vitous, Steve Marcus Thelonious Monk Roy Haynes Art Blakey Horace Silver Miles Davis lost quintet twice, once with Keith Jarrett as a sixth member Sonny Rollins Herbie Hancock Weather Report - original lineup Cannonball Adderley w/ Nat and Joe Zawinul Charlie Byrd Stan Getz w/ Dave Holland! Larry Coryell w/ Steve Marcus Chick Corea w/ Return to Forever (maybe not a great one - I was bored) two jazz rock standouts: Manfred Mann Chapter III If and not jazz, but a cult memory... Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks! -
My method is to listen to every CD I own before buying another. That can cause quite a delay!
