  1. 1988 - Monk BN and Mulligan with Baker
  2. Congrats!
  3. The code for 60% off with no shipping is L5OD7. Offer expires 1/26/05.
  4. When my first order arrived on the 15th, the jewel box case was cracked. So I emialed them for a free replacement. Isn't it funny that in eight years of BMG membership this never happened to me, and on the very first Your Music order it happened? Anyway, the replacement arrived today, and it is a 2-CD single-width model.
  5. At the bottom of my cart is a place indicating how many free CDs I have coming. I believe that this is independent of the Music Points deal. I think it has to do with referring new members. This morning I noticed that one had been subtracted. Looks like I have another phone call to make!
  6. Last week I noticed that 25 Music Points had been subtracted from my total. I called, and was told that it's a "use 'em or lose 'em" situation; and that I should have been told a couple of months ago that they were going to expire. Well, I wasn't told, so she gave me my points back. I decided to spend them, since I expect most of my shopping in 2005 will be with yourmusic.com. So I ordered the Ray Charles Complete Atlantic R&B box, which arrived today.
  7. Although the name was later given to Don Rickles, I remember it was Johnny who pegged Buddy Rich as "Mister Warmth".
  8. Buddy DeFranco, Discs 2 and 3. I like Sonny Clark's organ work on Disc 3. Unique sound for jazz.
  9. When I was a boy, the Boston Patriots were my favorite team. My favorite players were Babe Parilli and Gino Cappbaletti. They lost a lot in my book when they changed their name to New England, which sounds to me like a roller derby team. And they really lost a lot when they changed their colors and logo, so much so that it just isn't the same for me now. Of course, I've grown up since forty years ago too. I'm picking the Patriots today, because I'm not convinced that Roethlisberger's thumb is adequately healed. The guy is hurting.
  10. Sorry to see this. My favorite guest was Carol Wayne, speaking of Art Fern...
  11. Is this storm limited to blue states??? Do we see divine justice here? Edit: A little humor, folks! If this breaks the rule against political posts, feel free to delete it!
  12. I too really like that CD, although I'm not sure I would call it a year's best, but I won't nit pick! It reminded me of a pre-Passport Klaus Doldinger album on World Pacific from about 1970 entitled Blues Happening.
  13. I received my first CD today - Chet Baker Ensemble, half of which was released on the Grey December CD. It reminds me of the Clifford Brown PJ album, which Jack Montrose was also on (he's on this one too). I signed up on the 7th, the CD was shipped on the 10th, and it arrives on the 15th. That's pretty good, I think. As I understand it, I can now expect to receive a CD each month on the 15th.
  14. I received an offer today for Buy One Get Four Free. Code L5PM5, expires 1/17/05. A few weeks ago that would have been a great deal, but now that we're onto Your Music, it's not so hot!
  15. I just got JuJu in November, and I was a little disappointed. Not criticizing here, but I don't love it the way I love Speak No Evil.
  16. 1) I saw Clayton-Thomas and BST in 1985 in suburban Atlanta. He sounded terrific! His voice was lower than on the records. None of the band members had been on any of the records to my knowledge. 2) One of my favorite albums is a BST album done for ABC call Brand New Day. It has Don't Explain on it. I don't think it has ever been released on CD. 3) I have the in-concert CD with Larry Willis. It's called Live & Improvised. It was a double CD released by Columbia Legacy. I got it in 1991, and I think it hadn't been out long then.
  17. I think my shortest jazz CD is Buddy Rich's The Best Band I've Ever Had, which clocks in at 29:55.
  18. I can't be as enthusiastic about this album as Dan is, but it's a nice little number that I've enjoyed listening to over the years.
  19. Thank you all for this! I can see this becoming my favorite thread.
  20. Thanks Kevin. I too have signed up at Your Music for $4.99. First up will be a new semi-reissue of the Chet Baker Grey December CD. As I recall, Grey December was made up of tracks from two sessions. I believe that this CD is entirely of the first of those sessions. Next up will be EST. I've never heard them, but they get consistently good reviews from the Europeans over on AAJ, so I thought I would give them a try for five bucks.
  21. Putting the entire session on one CD is exactly what I expect from Concord. I'm not optimitic about their keeping things in print, but I do see them taking sessions spread over more than one LP (and therefore OJC) and putting them onto a CD they can charge $18 for.
  22. No way I could list twenty! My two favorite organ dates are Groove Holmes' first two albums for Prestige: Soul Message and Living Soul. A number of great tracks to choose from there, including Dahoud, Groove's Groove, Gemini and Living Soul. On the other hand, Misty is on there, and I wouldn't choose it. To each his own!
  23. You guys slay me! Another New Year's Day tradition is starting a new column for the new year on my database, to denote those albums heard during the year. I do this so that I can see what I haven't heard for a year or two (or more) and pull it out. I oftentimes find that I hear new things when I listen to an album for the first time in a long time.
  24. I have had a tradition for about ten years of opening up a Charlie Parker CD and a Julie London CD each year on January 1. This year it will be Nice Girls Don't Stay for Breakfast and probably Disc 3 of the Parker Live Savoy box. Anybody else have something they will open up January 1, 2005?
  25. My sister gave me a DVD player for Christmas. I knew that I would buy myself one eventually, so I have been slowly collecting DVD sets that looked interesting - Peter Gunn, Have Gun Will Travel, Dragnet, and a western I don't remember called Shotgun Slade, whose claim to fame seems to be that its music is akin to that of Peter Gunn's.
