The Yardbirds.....7 LP Vinyl box available
GA Russell replied to wolff's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
I've never understood why the reissues of The Yardbirds have been as chaotic as they have, compared to other British Invasion bands. They recorded for EMI in England, so why has it been so hard to obtain a simple complete set of their output, either as a single box or as a series of CDs? -
When I lived in Georgia, I used to know a guy who was a friend of his. I have one album that he's on, Lew Del Gatto's Katewalk on Naxos Jazz.

In addition to the people who made their living at vocalese, including Mark Murphy, I recommend the one album Manhattan Transfer did of this, called Vocalese oddly enough. I think it's their best album.

Hang On Ramsey was my first jazz album, in the summer of '66! I listen to it occassionally and enjoy it, probably for the nostalgia. I'm not a fan of his. I think that he was the poor man's Red Garland, who was in my book the poor man's Ahmad Jamal. But as I understand it, Lewis was regarded as a great showman. He should be given credit for being the first jazz musician to be hip to what the kids were listening to, and recording The In Crowd, A Hard Day's Night, and Hang On Sloopy. He was to my knowledge, which pales next to that of some of you guys, the first modern jazz musician to record a Christmas album, as well. That's marketing!

If you are of an age when you were actually 'into' the Power Rangers, then you're still little in my book. I was thinking the same thing. Heck, I thought I was young because I remembered Lassie as a forest ranger's dog rather than belonging to Timmy and June Lockhart... I remember when Lassie was owned by Jeff! My sisters watched it every week, and even though I hated it I watched whatever was on!

Organissimo opening for Joey DeFrancesco

Congrats Jim and the guys! -
It's afternoon now, but in the question's spirit I'm listening to first Billy Eckstine (Savoy) and then Frank Sinatra (Capitol).

So, when do you think BMG and Your Music will get it?
-
I have four of his albums, and may get another or two after a while. But the most boring jazz concert I ever attended was Dave Brubeck with his son Chris about 1971.

I agree with Phillyq. I would start with Miles Davis's Birth of the Cool, and move on from there. You don't say how new you are to jazz, only that you are new here. Perhaps you should tell us first what your favorites are so far.

Computer Question - Bullets
GA Russell replied to GA Russell's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
OK, I've found where the bullet with the 10 comes from, and I changed it to another type of bullet, so I think I have answered my question. I still don't understand what the 10 is for, but it's late and I can try to figure that out another day. -
Tony, here in the US the movie with the reputation as being the worst ever is Bela Lugosi's last flick, Plan 9 From Outer Space. I've never seen it, but I did see one when I was a kid called The Four Skulls of Jonathan Drake. Boy, was that bad! And in the 70s I made the mistake of seeing The Fugs' "comedy", whatever that was called. I should have asked for my money back for that one! And speaking of bad movies, don't forget Frank Zappa's 200 Motels. Made no sense whatever!

As regular readers of my ongoing tale know, I am learning StarOffice, which I believe works exactly the same as Microsoft Word. Today I typed my resume. I'm not sure how, exactly, but I got it to put a bullet in all the places I wanted one (at the start of each achievement listed under a given employment). But when I printed it out, each bullet had the number 10 inside of it. What the heck is that? How do I remove the number 10, and replace it with a solid bullet? I know how to create more bullets, I think, but I'm not sure why the program knew that one should go where it did, in just the right place. So I don't know what I did right, let alone what I did wrong. And as I say, I have no idea what someone was thinking when he thought I would want a bullet with a number 10 inside of it. Any ideas on how to make a solid bullet?

I've never heard Jacques Brel's recording of Seasons in the Sun, which I believe was the original, but I have The Kingston Trio's version and it's great. So I'll give the Terry Jacks version a pass. I voted for Alone Again because it annoyingly stays in my mind when I hear it.

In 1969 mono was phased out, replaced with a stereo "compatible" with mono record players. This was much like the phase-out of LPs. The stores quit stocking them, so the buyer didn't have any choice.

Welcome! I am already in the habit of playing Cal Tjader on May 5th! That day is a special one for me for personal reasons, so I would remember to put some of his music on. My favorite of his albums is Plugs In, on the Skye label. I don't think your dad ever made a bad album.

What's next on your YourMusic.com queue?
GA Russell replied to GA Russell's topic in Recommendations
Jazzbo, Equinox was for many years a desert island disc of mine! I've owned three LPs and a CD of it. I'm pretty much out of my lounge phase (which lasted decades, apparently!), so I'm not as high on it as I used to be. But for what it tries to be, I think it's one of the best! -
One month later, nothing's really changed. Al, without doing any research at Jazzmatazz, my first thought is that the situation you describe relates more to the major record labels than it does to the Music Club. Since the majors have gotten out of the jazz business for the most part, BMG needs to do some new deals with some of the smaller labels. The stream is drying up!

Thanks guys! Your opinion of this is higher than I thought it would be. I have added it to my YourMusic queue.

Dave, multiple choice questions don't have anything to do with writing skills. That's my point. What the SATs do measure, knowledge of specific subjects, they do well. Adding subjective writing skills to the mix muddies things up. By the way, it's my belief that writing skills are already tested in high school on a regular basis. I imagine there is a grade inflation problem related to that, but I also imagine that kids with good writing skills get good grades. The SATs are the kids' only chance to show the knowledge they have retained over the years.

To consider the original question...I am opposed to including an essay question on the SATs, because I think the SATs serve a useful purpose as is without being subjective. If the college wants to see an example of writing skills, it can ask the applicants to submit a sample. I wouldn't want my entrance into the college of my choice being waylaid by a Princeton ETS employee thinking I didn't measure up to his standards. If my writing skills are so mediocre, why did I get a good score on the multiple choice part?
