  1. Harold, I grew up in New Orleans, and Deacon John and the Ivories were regulars at our high school dances. Not my cup of tea, but I'm glad you enjoyed him. I have an album he made about '91, and if you'd like to trade for it I'm open to suggestions. PM me! I saw him at the '91 New Orleans Jazzfest, and the crowd loved him, although maybe the feelings were more sentimental than musical, but since you liked him too more than ten years later I guess he offers something to those in the market!
  2. Herbie Mann's Monday at the Village Gate with Dave Pike and Chick Corea is a nice album.
  3. It occurred to me to go to Amazon and look under DVD>Music>Jazz for ideas. Unfortunately, most of them are out of print. I then went to Deep Discount DVD and just punched in "Jazz" for the title and came up with quite a few, although most are more recent than 1970 as you would imagine.
  4. I grew up with Al Hirt's version, as I recall from his Honey in the Horn album. So for sentimental reasons, that's my favorite.
  5. Thanks for your recommendations! The name Jazz Casual came to me as I was driving home from work today. Funny how you get ideas while driving!
  6. I would enjoy seeing music from the 50s and 60s. Are there any DVDs available besides the Ralph Gleason show? What was that called?
  7. Thanks for that, Berrigan. I wonder if it's also true for certified checks. Probably the same arguments hold. I suppose that credit card is the way to go.
  8. Well, you guys have persuaded me that I should go with Nero to burn CDs for my car. Now I see that the Nero 6 Ultra costs $70-80, while something called Nero OEM Suite costs only $5 from Amazon. Does anybody know the difference? My only interest at this stage is burning CDs for my car. If the OEM Suite will do it with Nero's benefits, I'm wondering if the Ultra version offers all sorts of DVD-burning abilities I have no need for. Anybody know?
  9. By the way, Dudley Do-Right was not added till the move to ABC and The Bullwinkle Show, which I believe was the third season.

    Cecil McBee

I had some of McBee's work with Charles Lloyd and Mike Nock years ago, and haven't heard of him since. Glad to see that he's still playing! I think that my opinion on this matter is based upon the fact that I don't believe that the selection of the name was a coincidence. So I believe the store should pay up. Clothing stores want to be hip. Jazz bass players are hip. I can see someone deciding to name a store after a hipster musician.
  11. I had forgotten about this thread, and I started it! I went to BJ's Warehouse this week, and was surprised to see that they now carry Nero 6. I was going to pick it up but didn't. I won't wait much longer. Maybe I should spend the extra probable twenty bucks for the Reloaded, and order it from Amazon. What do you think? Thanks for the heads up, Claude!
  12. Not meaning to nitpick, but...the first two seasons the show was called "Rocky and His Friends" and was shown twice a week (Tuesdays and Thursdays in DC where I lived at the time). It was syndicated. It then (I think this was 1960, maybe '61) moved to ABC where it was called "The Bullwinkle Show", and was shown Sundays at 6:00 pm as I recall (I lived in Seattle then). It is also my vague recollection that they were inconsistent in the titles of the cartoons after they moved to ABC, sometimes carrying the name "Rocky and Bullwinkle", and sometimes "Bullwinkle and Rocky", but that may not be correct.
  13. I've just learned that Wilson was scheduled to be on the Jay Leno show last night. Did anybody see him?
  14. By the way, I bought some DVDs for my brother-in-law for Christmas last year from Deep Discount DVD http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/ and had good service from them. I think you'll like their prices and their selection.
  15. I'll never get tired of Groove Holmes' first Prestige album, Soul Message.
  16. Am I the last man in America to not have a DVD player hooked up to his TV? I may get one to watch the Rocky and Bullwinkle sets. Are they still as funny as I remember them to be?
  17. My copy of Herbie Mann's Flute Souffle is a Status, with a Prestige catalogue number. The logo appears like any other would, not a sticker or a redrawing. The album cover is a basic red, unlike that of the CD, which is basic white. I purchased it in 1969, when stores were clearing out their mono albums. The record itself has Prestige labels on both sides. I've never noticed any difference in the thickness.
  18. I don't think I've seen yet mentioned Richard "Groove" Holmes - Soul Message Thelonious Monk - Thelonious In Action Herbie Mann - Flute Souffle
  19. The Olsen twins escaped my attention as they were amassing their fortune. I read recently that they have made a huge amount of money making direct to video movies. I thought direct to video was supposed to mean a flop, but for them it has been the road to riches.
  20. Thanks for this thread! I saw the Kirk band about 1970, when Volunteered Slavery was his current album. I really enjoyed Ron Burton. In most groups, he would have been the star of the show!
  21. OK then, it looks like it will be Nero. Easy to use is a big selling point in my book.
  22. When I saw the title and sub-title of this thread, I just knew it was started by Berigan!
  23. In addition to Twinkies and Hostess cupcakes, Interstate also makes Wonder Bread. I was surprised to learn not too long ago that Wonder Bread was the first sliced bread. I think this was shortly after World War One. So the saying, "...greatest thing since sliced bread" is about Wonder Bread!
