I can't get in. Guess I'm not part of the cool crowd. I thought they had shut it down to new members, even those with invitations, due to the flood of people trying to join? Has it opened back up?

It is extremely easy for people to immigrate to Canada. A former co-worker went to university at Wayne State in Detroit, lived in Windsor, ON, maintained his Canadian residence while he finished his PhD and then his post-doc at American universities. He applied for Canadian citizenship as soon as he could (I don't remember exactly how long it took, but it was somewhere around 3, 4 years) and he got it without ever having worked or having a job offer in Canada, or even attending a Canadian school. Ridiculous. The health care system is not free- you don't pay at the point of service, but you pay in other ways, such as higher taxes, lower wages on average than in America, and much, MUCH longer wait times. And, you still pay for dental, and at least in NB, prescription drugs are more expensive than what I pay here.

I think Om and Transition may be the only Coltrane that I haven't heard yet (official releases, at least). Guess I'll have to get the boxes.

As I recall they were primarily known for their music which was distinctive and different from other bands of the time (and, to my ears at least, music that still repays listening to whether for pure enjoyment or nostalgic reasons). They also had distinctive sleeves. I'm not sure all the extra gimmicks began until around '73. Well, doesn't the cover count as packaging? I'd go for some vintage live releases, from the Meddle/Atom Heart Mother/Obscured by Clouds era. I'm not going for any of these rereleases unless they come down in price, but I don't object to them.

I don't see what the problem is. Pink Floyd was known for their packaging and artwork. It fits, really. And it sure as hell beats a download!

I'd like to hear that Couturier.

It's Trygve Seim - none too difficult... can't put it phonetically, but it's rather easy to pronounce, too (can't think of an english word that has the same pronounciation as the "y" in Trygve though, but the first syllable is stressed, so it's 'Tryg-ve, and the e at the end is mute, similar to how it is in "the"... Seim... the "ei" is as in "aye aye sir", kind of :-) ) Anyway... that one looks interesting. Haarla makes some good music. The Trio isn't really happening too much for me, without Stanko, but I confess I only have the first disc (and found it rather boring, hence was reluctant to buy more). Me, I've just gave Miroslav Vitous' "Remembering Weather Report" a first spin today... I know it came out two years ago, but that's about as fast I get to new releases, most often. I quite enjoyed it! This is still a favorite of mine.

Borders Enters Chapter 11, Plans To Close 30% Of Stores
GregK replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Opposite situation with the flagship store in Ann Arbor. Situated downtown, stand-alone store, always a lot of people using it as a hang-out in that area (especially during Art Fair week or when something good was playing at the Michigan Theater across the street that people were waiting for), and many, many times was I accosted to sign petitions in front of that store. -

I did my best to keep them in business.....as a music store, at least. I even bought a decent amount of books at each of the Borders stores here over the years. How am I supposed to browse my personal collection of e-books, anyway? It's just not the same. -
what is "emo"? I don't know the kids' slang these days...

I'd like to check out that Rogue Art too-what's on the DVD? I got Far Side about a week after it came out, listened to it twice but with all of the other things I've gotten lately I haven't had much time to thoroughly listen to it. From the little I've heard, it certainly requires a dedicated listen. The first song is an epic. But I have liked just about everything recent that he has released (that I've heard), so I will be going back to it soon.

this blows my mind on so many levels- -
Wasn't the low price mistake by CD Universe on the Cellar Door box? $38? You're right about the lousy notes in the Corner box. I couldn't believe that this is what they released it with, when all of the others had so much more information and analysis.

I never knew there were sub-fora...where do I find them?

Wow. Just a SLIGHT exaggeration, there. Two, three years from now, it will be Tim who? He's a decent goalie, but clearly Vancouver was kept off their game by Boston's more physical game and superior defense. It's not like Thomas had to face the '84-'85 Oilers!

i've been told that my copy is defective, although i don't hear it.

Anyone else use an electronic piece of crap?
GregK replied to David Ayers's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
android. never going back. it just gets better and better. -
So far the Google version is superior. Very simple to use and no problems yet. They haven't announced what the price will be, though.

Me neither. I did sign up for Twitter. Can I follow you on that, Chuck? Maybe I'll just email you when something comes up, as usual.

I'm not a facebook person, and have no interest in becoming one. Would this still work for me?

When was the last time a Canadian team was in the finals? Was it Calgary against Carolina, in something like 2004? When was the last time a Canadian team had a chance in the finals? Probably Montreal in 1993, right? So Vancouver might actually have a shot this year, as I sort of predicted way back at the beginning of this thread!

Is the internet slowing down...
GregK replied to A Lark Ascending's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Sorry, that was my fault. Netflix is now available for my Evo and I've also been streaming music from the Amazon cloud. IE is notorious for being a slow browser. Use Chrome, and try using Google's DNS (I think it's 8.8.8.8? google it!) -
