This may be an ignorant question with an obvious answer, but I really don't know-is SACD supposed to approximate as closely as possible what we would be hearing if we had a reel-to-reel with the actual master tape lined up, with all the proper amplifiers, pre-amp, etc.?

"definately" vs. "definitely"
GregK replied to neveronfriday's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
huh? where is the double "r"? -
I wish Borders would do a sale. BestBuy and Circuit City don't have much to offer me anyway
-
Thanks. Due to limited resources, I'm going to go with Sunday at the 'guard for now. I hear lots of praise for Red Trumpet, so I'll try them. Can't wait to hear it!!
-
I need to find these. I've always thought a piano trio like Evans' (or Keith Jarrett's) would sound great on SACD. You really need to hear the detail to appreciate such music, so I must find these
-
Are Bill Evans' Waltz for Debby and Village Vanguard available on SACD? If so, how do they sound?
-
I have the Fox run on order, Mansfield MA and the Rosemont you are referring to. I can't decide what else to add-I really love it when they move closer to jazz territory, like on the longer versions of Desdemona and Elizabeth Reed. I was thinking of adding the Atlantic City show since they describe Desdemona as being "very jazzy"-what that means I'm not quite sure but it may just what I'm looking for.
-
How did you hear 15 shows? I am really excited about this. I'm trying to resist buying any more shows- I have 5 on order now. Since it's a limited production I may add one or two more, but can't decide which ones
-
I don't know how accurate a comparison this is. I'm no expert, but I've read in other places that that particular SACD really has no difference between SACD and CD, like there was a mastering error or something. I can't recall the exact details, sorry. I have noticed though, on my average system, some great details highlighted by SACD. There is a noticeable difference on such rock recordings as Allman Brothers Eat a Peach and Fillmore East (you can really hear the separation of guitars on the SACD) and Derek and the Dominos Layla, and some of the Dylan ones.

I don't think there is a catch. Unless you forget to have something in your queue, in which case your credit card automatically gets charged and you get nothing. Automatic charges to your credit card might be a problem for some people, perhaps. You can cancel anytime, shipping is free, you can buy any title in the BMG catalog for $5.99 a disc (so multi disc sets are # of discs X $5.99)-I don't get how they can do this and still make money, but I'm gonna try it out for 6 months (or more, if they add more titles I might want).
-
so what do you think? I happened to get this with the BMG 5.99/no SH deal also, and it just came today. Only on track one but so far I like it. I also got Brahem/Surman/Holland, Thimar, also on ECM-that's next in the CD player
-
now that I've discovered www.yourmusic.com, I know I will have a CD coming at $5.99 (free shipping!) once a month for the next 6 months, and my first two are the Relaxin' SACD followed by the Lush Life SACD-hopefully that will slow down the impulse buys!

I'm there even less-maybe twice a week. I was wondering why I didn't see Chris pop in on the Wynton Marsalis appreciation thread a few months ago though....

I like the Blue Bunny French Vanilla-I get it at Meijer Isn't that ice cream? oh yeah, maybe you're right. I meant Vanilla Creme. I also enjoy the Raspberry flavor. I'm not sure what Splenda will do to my liver though

Whisper Not is made up of mostly jazz (boppish) standards, while most of the other ones are pop standards. But they play the hell out of anything so, as Keith says, it's not so much the material that matters, it's what they do with it that does. Bye Bye Blackbird is a tribute to Miles recorded a week or 2 after he died and is a very good one, but is somewhat unique because it's a studio recording, not a live one, so there is a slight difference in feel. Tribute is a live set made up of standards done in tribute to various influences. Inside Out is a bluesy, "out" record, all originals except for a When I fall in Love encore, and is one of my favorites. Always Let Me Go is from the same territory, less bluesy, even more out and is probably my favorite of all. Long pieces (2 are over 30 minutes, some are in the 15 min range), very abstract, and to me Jack's drumming is very powerful on this one. At the Deer Head Inn is a nice comparison because it is a live record from an Inn where Keith played in his earliest days-Paul Motian is the drummer, and it's a very good set. Very swinging. The Blue Note box would be the best place to start if you can afford it- it has everything, and lots of it! Check out the 20+min version of Autumn Leaves on disc 3-outstanding!!! If you can't afford that one, Still Live is a good place to start if you want to hear their take on standards. Double disc, great versions of standards, and one or two Jarrett originals tacked onto the endings of a couple songs. A long reply, I know, but I love this music and could talk for days about it. The rest of them that I haven't mentioned here are made up of mostly standards, similar to each other but above all, wonderful. You really can't go wrong choosing at random

I got it, it's as good as you'd expect, but the title tune is a great, long, free-ish piece that turns into a blues near the end. Overall very good but ultimately more of the same.

Larry Kart book signing
GregK replied to Larry Kart's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
Please post somewhere on hear if and when you will be appearing on Fresh Air, Larry. I'd like to hear it, and I don't get a chance to listen every day so a heads-up would be great. This book is also on my Christmas list -
I'd like to see a whole box of the more "out" stuff they were playing a couple years ago. That was some of the best trio music I've ever heard
-
great timing for this thread for me. I have just started exploring this group. I got their ECM rarum, and while I know it isn't exactly representative of their work, I really really enjoy it. My goodness I never realized a bass could sound that good. and Lester Bowie has some of the best sounding trumpet I have ever heard. I need to know, where next? I will be getting the 67/68 box from Chuck after Christmas, but what else? I was thinking Nice Guys
-
thank you for this. time to order that Circle Paris Concert finally!!

who's rejecting anyone's rights??

I think you're being generous-since when is Rolling Stone ever about music??

KICK ASS!!! you like the G-man too?? what's your favorite? this is one of the funniest, and at the same time, sadly, most accurate, posts I have ever read -
I know it's been mentioned before, but I'm too impatient to do a search. Where can I order this box from, if it's still available?
