To my ears, London Calling is one of the great rock 'n' roll albums of any decade. The Clash's openly, insistently leftist politics probably wouldn't appeal to a Bush supporter. It has nothing to do with politics, they just suck and THAT record, especially, is boring.

I never understood the fascination with the Clash. I tried and tried to make it all the way through London Calling but I got bored quickly. I was, and still am, stunned by these choices for the best albums of the 80s. I don't want to get into one of those "what are they thinking, that album sucks!" debate, so I won't say what I think should be #1, but the Clash it aint

This looks interesting (I found this on Steve Hoffman's site, which was taken from USA Today): •Beyond Description (1973-1989), a sequel to Rhino's 10-disc The Golden Road (1965-1973) box set, arrives Oct. 26 with 15 hours of music on 12 discs. The $150 set holds 10 studio albums plus 65 previously unreleased tracks. This should include an upgrade of Blues for Allah, which I have been waiting for. Also, there's word that Dicks Picks 19-24 will be available in stores for a brief period at the end of August

I think it's because it was only 3 discs, so it didn't fit right somehow.

Now that's something I respect! One of the best things about America is Starbucks....

I've asked this very question at least 3 different times on this board since spring and no one answered-either no one knew or they didn't bother to answer. Is it still due on the 28th?

The new James Carter Live at Baker's is in BMG now too

I wish they'd let you use it on a CD you ordered for in-store pickup. What kind of stupid policy is that? Why must I be at the mercy of whoever their store purchaser is??

Also new: Allman Brothers-One Way Out

AOTW July 25-July 31: Keith Jarrett, Fort Yawuh
GregK replied to Guy Berger's topic in Album Of The Week
I think the mood of Roads Travelled, Roads Veiled is just terrific. I have this on the box, so I'm not sure what is and what isn't bonus material (I don't have it with me right now) but this is one the strongest pieces of the entire set. I'd really like to hear Jarrett play out like this again. I like his comments from the stage too! -
I used mine to buy my daughter a Raffi CD. it's Live!!!
-
I need another Jarret trio live record like I need another breath. I'll pick up his trio records the day they're released and enjoy them until the next one is out and beyond

I'd get a hybrid if GM made one-I'll never buy a Honda or Toyota

Let's compile a jazz-cd buying guide...
GregK replied to connoisseur series500's topic in Recommendations
If we include new CDs (no used), then you can add Schoolkids Records, in the basement of Bivouac on State Street, beside the Wazoo. Great prices on new CDs, box sets, vinyl, etc. Usually hard to find titles are there, plus the occasional bootleg. Also, another used CD/record shop is PJs, above the Subway on Packard/State -
WHETHER WE WERE MENT TO HERE IT OR NOT, I REALLY ENJOY THIS RECORD. THERE IS SOME GREAT PLAYING, ESPECIALLY THE TENOR OR ALTO/DRUM DUETS, BY BOTH. BEST LLOYD IN MANY YEARS, AND STUFF

I live in a small city about 4-5 miles southwest of Ann Arbor (which I'm not sure is considered a big city-120K people in Ann Arbor proper, but about half a million if you count the surrounding townships, etc. To me it is mid-size), so I have the culture offered by the U of M, which is fantastic, great concerts, etc, and good bookstores and record shops. But I must say two of the best coffee shops I've ever been to are right here in Saline-the Drowsy Parrot and Sweetwaters. That is one thing that makes a city a good place to live- good coffee shops. I'd have to say metro Ann Arbor is a very fine place to live, if you can stand the uber-liberal politics of the place (which I can, but barely)

I am so frustrated by Borders. I prefer shopping there but today I went in to use my 20% coupon to buy Charles Lloyd and Higgins "Which way is East". I checked the website, where you can check inventory in the store, and it said yes, it was there. I have been checking every day all week to make sure it was still there, that there wasn't an error or that it wasn't sold out, and when I get to the store, nothing. Nowhere to be found. I even checked the in-store computer, and it said yes, it was there. I asked someone, and he looked everywhere and couldn't find it. This is the same store that frequently is out of half and half and coffee lids in the coffee shop-yes, I've had to walk out of there with my coffee cup uncovered more than once!! So I went to fye and paid full price for that CD, just to spite Borders for not having it when they said they did!! Of course, I will be back at Borders with the next coupon!

What's wrong with rap? At least it ain't jazz! Let's not play that game, OK? ummm, sorry, not ok. I will express my opinion as I see fit. Ignore it or be bothered by it, your choice.

Chick Corea one week at the Blue Note
GregK replied to Tjazz's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
I saw this for $19 buy-it-now on ebay a few months ago and didnt buy it. It was new, factory sealed, but I had read some reviews saying it was bad (=boring), so I didnt do it. I liked their release called Change though. -
What's wrong with country? At least it ain't rap!
-
I got mine last week, also no signatures. Great music though. I like the timing being off -sounds more improvisational!
-
I'm surprised there has been such little discussion about this release, with all the positive reviews it's gotten and all the Lloyd fans on the board (connosieur series, where are you?). I've been thinking about getting this one when the budget allows

So, who wants to play at the Bird of Paradise
GregK replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in organissimo - The Band Discussion
it's getting worse in ann arbor. a few months ago someone was attacked from behind and stabbed as he was walking down a street next to campus. 2 girls were attacked when someone busted into their house. now we have a brawl. guess I'll never make it to the Bird before it's gone- I choose not to fight! -
I understand completely- I've convinced myself into getting one double (Sonny Rollins at the Vanguard) and two single ECMS, which I only buy when I have Borders coupons because they are priced higher than most other CDs regularly. But I could do a lot of damage if I let myself!
