  1. Yes, you're right, I remember that thread now. Thanks. I'm really enjoying the Live Under the Sky reissue, mostly for Tony, Freddie and the great compositions.
  2. most likely it was Orono then.
  3. Didn't they reform in the early 90s after Miles died? Are there any recordings?
  4. yes, I too think Wayne's playing is good, just not as interesting as he can be
  5. I'm with you on that. I am a big fan of this series, and it never made sense from the original announcement that it would stop at 1970. There is a lot of material after that, up to 1975. I hope they include the Agharta and Pangaea material in this next box. This is very good news.
  6. Bangor Maine??? This is one of the most surprising things I've read here. Where in Bangor was the show? I used to spend a lot of time there as a kid. Never once would I expect to be able to catch any kind of live jazz there.
  7. I don't know, your avatar is a pretty good thing too
  8. I just preordered this box set, because I want remastered copies of Blues for Allah, Wake of the Flood and Mars Hotel, and the rest I'm just curious about. I've heard all of the albums after those I just mentioned and don't need them but I'm interested in hearing the bonus material. Plus, the extra disc looks cool, and the price is pretty good for a box set of this size. Total around $130 or so, avg of $10 per disc. Since I have the Golden Road box I gotta get this one to complete the set anyway! It looks like they are also reissuing So Many Roads at the same time.
  9. that comparison is enough of a wicked insult itself!!
  10. yes, I'm aware of the rainstorm and all, but I guess what I'm wondering is why no Shorter compositions, and why is his playing so mild? I have no idea what playing in a rainstorm would be like, so maybe I'm being unfair. Why are Belden's liner notes dated April 2003?
  11. I got this today at Borders, $11.99, not a sale, that's list price. I actually had to ask the info desk for help- I was there around 12:30 and they still hadn't put it out yet. I went with the info clerk to the cart where they had all of today's new releases to be filed, and plucked out the only copy! Good price. I'm liking it so far, but where the hell is Wayne? Is he even on this? His solo in Tear Drop sounds pretty pedestrian for him. Lots of good Freddie Hubbard though
  12. how did he manage to get away with 5000 CDs?
  13. I've gotten rid of some, but always as part of a trade for something else. I never found Dave Holland Not for Nothing very interesting, so that became part of a trade for the Coltrane live in Europe box.
  14. my answer is, "nowhere near enough". I last counted in 1998, and there were about 1500 then (although that includes non-jazz), and I was still a grad student then. With a regular, good income now, I've only bought many, many more CDs, and about 90% of those have been jazz. Probably over 2000 now? I have no idea Do we count all the discs in a box set as individual CDs? Or is the box counted as one?
  15. Here's some info from the bulletin board on the Real Frank Zappa site, which is taken from ICE magazine, about this new Wazoo release: " It's from a cassette Joe found from one of the rarest bands, Frank had, from the Petite Wazoo era (fall 72). It's just a rehearsal tape, and the musicians are struggling with a piece. What you get to hear is how Frank ran a rehearsal - talking the players through their parts, the phrasing keeping the band together." it goes on..."Dweezil says there are "probably a dozen things getting to the completion stage, so there'll be more coming out over the next six months to a year. We're getting to a point where we can create a subscription service for the fans, so they can either subscribe (through www.zappa.com) and get everything for a year, or just a selection of things, depending on what they want". Ice Magazine # 211 October 2004, page 4
  16. supposedly this is a teaser for more from that period of Zappa's career, i.e. part of a series of full concert releases spanning his entire performing career. We'll see about that though
  17. Just got this email last night: http://storesense01.dynamic.net/zappa/Detail.bok?no=669 Here's the tracklist: 1. When it's perfect 3:18 2. The new brown clouds 2:44 3. Frog song 17:23 4. Think it over some/ think it over some more 5:20 9. Another whole melodic section 1:53 10. When it feels natural 1:27 Total time: 55:32
  18. yeah, right, I brought politics into it. And if it was, say, Albright who had made the comments, you would have raised the same objection??
  19. get Dylan and the Dead. It is far and away one of the most boring releases I have ever heard. There is nothing about it to recommend, which is a shame. It could have been so much more. The Dead sound tired and bland, Dylan sounds uninterested, and the whole record drags.
  20. no, not paranoia, I'm just burnt out on all the politcally motivated sniping everywhere this year!
  21. what do you disapprove of? just because he's a Republican?
  22. Does anyone have any opinions on Maneri's latest ECM release? Its called Angles of Repose, recorded in a church in France. I haven't heard it but I was wondering if anyone had anything to comment about it
  23. I paid about $70-75 for the Jack Johnson box on the day it was released, at Borders. That was the list price (no sale)
