  2. No matter what else I listen to lately, I always go back to Coltrane at the Village Vanguard (1961). From the tunes played to the beautiful sound of the recording (the drums!!! holy cow!!) to the performances it is just a perfect set of music for me. Can't get enough of it
  3. Funny, I was seriously thinking of buying this the next time I'm in Borders. From the little snippets I've heard, I liked it. I know nothing about Maneri though
  4. My EXACT first thought-Lewis Porter's book. When I read Porter's analyses, it was clear to me right away that he knew what he was talking about, he understood Coltrane's music (emotionally, technically, everything), he really gets it. What this other guy is going on about, I don't know, but he completely missed it. Melody?? That's one of the most heartfelt, beautiful, strongest melodies that I've ever heard. Good enough for me
  5. You're right, Chris, any kind of exposure is good, but I am thinking of statements like "Isn't this that song for the KMart commercial" whenever I play that tune around someone who doesn't know what it is. If it prompts someone to check out Coltrane, great, but if it turns into "that TV commercial song" I don't know how good that could be. Maybe I just don't understand marketing!
  6. Oh man, I went somewhat nuts too-that Fox box, Rosemont, Mansfield, Charlotte, Knoxville, Jones Beach and Atlantic City-9 in all! I don't expect them to arrive until after the New Year though. The last batch (for 2003) didn't arrive until 2 months after the pre-order ended. It's a very small family-run company so it understandably takes them quite a while to ship all of these out.
  7. I can't believe what I just heard- a commercial came on TV for inmate Martha Stewart's stuff at KMart with Coltrane's My Favorite Things playing in the background-UGH!!
  8. I could listen to Fripp play guitar all day. He is always interesting, frequently fascinating. Also, I could read his writings all day and still understand only a fraction of what he says!
  9. man, save yourself the trouble, join www.yourmusic.com, get anything in the entire BMG catalog for $5.99 per disc, never any S & H. You can get all those Dylan SACDs for that price, any time.
  10. Dolphy? Is it Dole-fee (as in Bob DOLE! ) or Dawl-fee?
  11. Chuck, did you know him? You must have seen him at the Nickel, no?
  12. Chris, that is fascinating stuff to read, now, in 2004. I couldn't imagine turning on my local NPR, for instance, and hearing names like that guest-hosting or performing (well, it's not like there are many contemporary names that rival any of those). Ayn Rand??? Must have been some great discussions with the janitor!! Thanks for the memories. I could listen to or read stories like this all day. Now I doubly regret missing the talk you gave in Ann Arbor last year. Dylan?? He's always turning up in odd places isn't he
  13. Chris, forgive me if this is common knowledge or if it's been talked about a lot, but I know nothing about it. I've been reading Lewis Porter's excellent book on Coltrane and in the Chronology section at the back he mentions that Coltrane was on WBAI in 1965 at your invitation, but no tape exists. What did he play? And why isn't there a tape of it? I know very little about the radio business-I'm assuming it's not a common practice to record what is being broadcast, but wouldn't Coltrane being on prompt someone to keep a copy of it?
  14. I don't know what to say. Billy Joel???
  15. I'm not sure I hear "trebly cymbals" on the Love Supreme SACD- do you have a high-end system? Mine is NOT high-end, so I may just not be able to hear what you're referring to on my system
  16. if it weren't for drinking in college and the internet i wouldn't have half the CDs i have now!
  17. i'd be interested in reading what he has to say about Ascension, Meditations, Sun Ship, etc
  18. I listen to Footprints Live at least once a month, if not more frequently. I'd say he's made a stunning comeback, particularly after seeing him live twice in the past 4 years.
  19. Is that a mustache I see? Make it a little thicker and it LOOKS like Mr. Williams...
  20. nice cover-speaking of Wayne, though, I'm anticipating his bio coming out in December
  21. what's the problem? do you like cauliflower? what's this have to do with Coltrane/Hartman? Please start another topic thank you No, thank you

  23. what's the problem?
  24. Are you interested in or have you heard the Allman Brothers SACDs? Fillmore East and Eat a Peach sound very nice!!
  25. you're going to really like the Layla disc! I got it last week, and have listened to it a lot since then. Very nice detail in the guitars. I don't really care for surround, but I did listen to that layer once and noticed the vocals isolated in the center channel, where you can really hear just how pained Clapton was, particularly on I Looked Away. When it is just his voice with nothing else in the same channel, the first thing that struck me was how he sounded so hurt. Nice echo around his vocals too. I haven't had time to listen for his and Allman's guitars in surround yet
