Gotta love CDBABY's marketing copy...
PHILLYQ replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
The cover alone is worth it, but then you add the expert advice about touching and intimacy- who knew? I ordered a couple of blues discs, one Latin & a fusion- at a fiver a pop, I'll experiment. Maybe I should have ordered the orgasm disc to somehow justify the purchase to my wife?i -
If I'm Bobby B. I'd be reeeeal careful- Janice's men have a bad habit of winding up dead! The Paulie Walnuts subplot with the gardeners could be the spark for a war- Johnny Sack reminds Tony every chance he gets how Tony left Johnny Sack hanging when JS wanted to whack Carmine. The gardener dispute could give JS his opening to at least damage Tony. And Jim, if Feech allies himself with Johnny Sack, I see you eating breakfast at McDonalds! Adrianna is headed for some horrible end- Drea DeMatteo is doing a great job portraying her anguish, confusion & pain- it's almost palpable.

Pete C, I also was at the concert that was released as 'Mingus at Carnegie Hall'. I always thought it a shame that the first set was never released- the group smoked that night.

Potential new "jazz-related" job for the Rooster??
PHILLYQ replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
RT, Good communication skills are essential to this position. You'll be giving tours and speaking quite a bit to groups, and you'll probably have to write a bunch of stuff as far as proposals, outlines, etc. A good speaking voice or one that can carry will be useful. I seem to recall that you did some choral stuff, so you know how to project your voice well. Good organizational skills are always important. When dealing with groups of kids, 'Santa Pazienca(sp)'- that's Italian for patience of a saint', frequently heard in my house when growing up with my two sisters! BEST OF LUCK, RT, LET US KNOW HOW THIS DEVELOPS... -
Potential new "jazz-related" job for the Rooster??
PHILLYQ replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
RT, You have a great deal of knowledge, and anything you don't know someone on this board knows, you can handle mass amounts of paperwork, you're enthusiastic about the music(Do you like kids/can deal with groups of them?), do you need anything else? The money may not be great, but how many people get to do something that relates to something they love? That may be worth a lot. Go for it, and impress upon the interviewer that you are knowledgable and that you'd love to share that with kids. -
And Paulie can't even close the trunk! I saw Tony Sirico on the street one day(helives in Brooklyn), and as he passed by me I whispered"Paulieeee". He shot me a Paulie Walnuts eyebrow-raised look that made me laugh out loud!

Uncle Junior watching 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' & thinking Larry & Jeff were he and Bobby B. was hysterical! The gardener with the arm brace/cast was a good laugh, too. Does Robert Loggia have the perfect mafia hood voice?

I picked it up last week and have only given it a few spins, but I like what I hear. WSQ does a few tunes you'd expect(Foxy Lady), and some that aren't covered very often(The Wind Cries Mary). The arrangementsare very good to my ears, and there's some inspired playing on the disc. There are three original members on this disc, Murray, Bluiett, & Lake, and Craig Harris(the trombone player) is added on some cuts(His spoken word vocal on 'Wind Cries Mary' is very effective). Billy Bang is on violin on some cuts, I can't think of the bass player(I'm at work right now), and Gene Lake is the drummer. Gene Lake does some outstanding work on this one, and Bang's violin work is also very good.

Good luck, Conn!

When we're not here, what do we do for a living?
PHILLYQ replied to Hardbopjazz's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I work on Wall Street, but I am a back-office gnome who works very under the radar. I'm due to be laid-off in a few months, and then if I'm accepted into this special program I'll start a new career as a teacher. -
Thanks, Dr. Rat fro weighing in on the cheese thread!
-
Don't even know the guy's name, but I heard that the guy who played the guitar solo on Steely Dan's 'Reelin' in the Years' got $90.

Catesta mentioned fresh mozzarella- if that is anywhere near you, or even if you have to drive 50 miles, GET IT! It is a cheese experience for the ages and nothing like the Polly-o in the supermarket. If you like smoked, smoked mozzarella is sublime. While not sharp, fresh mozzarella is creamy and tastes great witout any adornment.

Jim, There is a 2disc set called 'VSOP' under HH's name that presented a career retrospective. It has one disc of the VSOP quintet, and the other disc is split between the funk band and the Mwandishi band(Bennie Maupin, Billy Hart, Julian Priester, Buster Williams, Eddie Henderson). It's not available domestically, but I was able to get it on Ebay, I think from one of the board members. That's the only official release of that band live. I was also at that concert.

Get the sharpest provolone you can get(Some places have extra sharp, what my wife calls 'the stinky cheese'), preferably imported. If there's any kind of Italian deli near you, go straight there without hesitation! It may be a little expensive, but if you want sharp, this is sharp heaven!

non-standard "saxamaphone"-like instruments
PHILLYQ replied to Rooster_Ties's topic in Miscellaneous Music
I think at one time Henry Threadgill played something called a 'hubkaphone' that was a weird mix of a saxophone and something else... -
SS1, Don't forget Hubie Brown in considering Coach of the Year- he's done a great job, also.
-
The Cowboys got Drew Henson, and they better hope he's a better QB than third baseman! Troy Vincent signed with the Buffalo Bills. If Kearse is healthy(and that's a big if), he can make the Eagles better. There hasn't been a final solution yet to the TO whinefest, but it looks like he may wind up in Philadelphia with the Ravens getting a compensatory(Read: Sorry you got shafted!) pick.
-
The snitch is CARMINE- he didn't die, and the stroke was just a set up to get him physically out of the picture and into the witness protection program. So now we have Carmine(Look out, Johnny Sack!!!) and Adrianna both snitching to the feds. Should be very interesting... Carmine snitching makes Johnny Sack look brilliant for wanting to whack Carmine, even if that's not why he wanted to whack him.

Breyer's even makes a low-carb version called 'Carb Smart' that is excellent! I chow down enough of it to know.

Here's one- you can buy it new on the website for $20 or on Ebay for $41- take your pick: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...MEBDW%3AIT&rd=1

Thanks for the album cover, Couw . Should I post the picture on a separate thread and ask what you think these guys are doing?

Is it perhaps a spammer? They would benefit greatly from multiple email accounts.

I haven't even heard the Gil Evans box yet, but Plugged Nickel just blew me away more than the others. To hear an entire weekend of sets, with the widely varying versions of the same tunes, to hear Tony Williams treat time as if he's Einstein(It's all relative), Wayne Shorter's passionate playing, etc. is just amazing. When it first came out I looked around and saw it selling for $119.99 at one place, and I thought that was too much. I then saw it a few days later for $99.99, and I was about to spring for it, but I got too busy to hit the store that had it. A few days later I popped into a store that had almost no jazz, just to peek around, and lo and behold, for $69.99- I bought it immediately!

The Man taking all my money...
PHILLYQ replied to Jim Alfredson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
B-3r, Jim Sangrey made a great point about reporting this piece of s***. It's one thing that you owe the taxes and they snatched your money, but they should act ina professional manner. Calling you a liar is way, way out of bounds no matter what you owed or what the situation is with them. They owe you a duty to be fair and act professional at all times- I'd report this slimebag in writing, too, so that it would help ensure a response. Jeez, they couldn't set up a payment plan? I had a situation about 15 years ago with Social Security where I owed them $ , and they gave me a payment plan that I could handle- it's a damn shame that the state folks won't do that as well. Count me in for a contribution also- this website is fantastic, with a lot of great people on it. B-3r, you do a great job running this site- my humble thanks.
