Ghost, Don't fall for the 'If x is in there, then y(a similar player) deserves to be in there' line. That's been used for a number of players, and what that fails to consider is that there are players in the HOF who really don't belong there, they're 'mistakes'. Tony Perez is one who comes to mind- his main claim to fame is that RBI total, but in that Big Red Machine lineup you could hit .250 and amass a ton of ribbies. Bill James wrote a fascinating book on the HOF,but I'm not home right now to give you the title. It's a great analysis of who belongs in the HOF and who doesn't. I'm thinking about Alomar and his numbers, not Cobb and his beahavior vis-a-vis Alomar.

I remember 'You Light Up My Life', what a disgusting piece of tripe, and it seemed as if it were playing everywhere simultaneously.Debby Boonewas also the daughter of the man who made the vanilla versions of Little Richard('Tutti Fruitti', anyone?) AND did a heavty metal album- a truly revolting family who should only sing at home and never record again!

Have you ever robbed a bank?
PHILLYQ replied to rockefeller center's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Bank robbery is about the most popular crime in NYC these days. The banks long ago got rid of any security guards, and the robbers usually get maybe $600 to $2000 dollars a robbery. From the bank's point of view it's not worth it to beef up security for small amounts like that, so they consider it another cost of doing business. The police commissioner has been really peeved at the banks' relunctance to do anything to prevent robberies. Recently a woman in Brooklyn robbed a bank to pay for her pet's operation, and when she realized how easy it was she kept right on doing it until she got busted! -
'Attempted relevant' songs reminds me of a terrible one by Dion, 'Abraham, Martin& John'. What a pile of junk! This from the same guy that did such classics as 'Runaround Sue' & 'The Wanderer'. Go figure...

I wouldn't be proud of having an idea as twisted as that. Considering that a lot of these people on 'reality' shows lie, cheat & steal to win, this poor child will get some unprincipled louts as parents. Great way to start a life...

Are we close to running out of stupid questions? (Stolen from David Brenner) Why are gas station bathrooms locked? Are they scared that someone will break in and clean them?

They're brother and sister- that explains how they could do something that stupid, it's the inbred genes! -
Good point, Rachel. I just hope that the fans in NY/NJ will have some patience with Manning- he'll definitely have some growing pains in his first season, and NY/NJ can be tough as far as expectations and demands. By the way,did you see who the Giants drafted in the second round? He's an offensive lineman, but the guy's son is Coughlin's grandson!!!!!!!!!! I guess this is one way to be sure he takes care of his child support obligations. That's gotta make for some interesting team meetings...

The Giants may have paid too much for Manning. The Giants GM was so hot to get Manning that he gave up a first round pick next year. Manning, Rothlisberger(sp) and Rivers were all highly rated QBs, and the Giants could have had Rivers or Rothlisberger without sacrificing any picks at all. In addition, the Chargers were possibly stuck with a player that wouldn't play for them, thus making their bargaining position rather weak. If the Giants have a lousy year next season, which is entirely possible, they've given up a great pick. Of course, this is all qualified by how the three QBs do as pro players- if Manning plays great and the other two are busts, then the price paid is not that bad after all.

I know Ron Carter isa tough professor. A friend of mine went to the music program at City College in NYC, and Ron Carter was one of his professors. My friend said he was pretty demanding, but he did not say that in a negative way. Maren makes a very good point, though, about the single encounter as a poor way to judge a person. Maybe Ron Carter had to go to the bathroom really bad, or his lunch was playing tricks on him, his shoes were too tight, etc. Everybody has their bad days, too.

Black College Women Take Aim at Rappers
PHILLYQ replied to BERIGAN's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
Here's a related column from Stanley Grouch. Usually I disagree with him, but I think he has a point here: Hip hop takes a hit Black women are starting to fight rap's degrading images You never know in America. Just when you think something bad is going to go on far longer than it should, signs of its being brought to a sudden halt appear. Nelly, a rapper from St. Louis who is notorious for his hedonistic rap videos and dehumanizing images of black women, has been stopped in his tracks by a group of concerned young women from Spelman College and young men from Morehouse College, two historically black schools in Atlanta. The rapper chose not to appear at a recent fund-raiser in Atlanta for a bone marrow project to avoid being confronted by these students, who deem the images of women in his videos indefensible. This was a first, and a long time coming - and it may be just the tip of a mountain that has been hidden from view by all the excuses made for rappers based purely on the big money they make. A brother is just out there working hard to make some cash, say the apologists. All a rapper is telling us is what he is seeing. And nobody is forcing those women to roll their behinds at the video cameras. They are just trying to make a little money like everybody else. The women at Spelman were not having it. They were tired of being referred to as bitches, as 'hos, as freaks. They demanded a change of direction and content. It is an issue of respect. This should be a revolutionary moment in popular culture - the fire starting to get free. No group other than black women has sat in silence while being constantly dehumanized for so long a time. That dehumanization has reached a level that makes the old-time movies full of giggling, handkerchief-headed black maids seem child's play. How long could we expect women to turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to the obvious hatred of their sex expressed in rap videos? How long would it be before women grew angry at being perpetually depicted as hopped-up sluts willing to do anything for a chance to party next to young men with money? I am seeing signs that what happened at Spelman and Morehouse colleges is far from an isolated reaction. About a month ago, I was brought (coincidentally) to Atlanta by Leatrice Ellzy, a cultural producer who runs a lecture series called "The Intellectual Underground." One gives a talk and entertains questions from the audience. I made my usual attack on the new minstrelsy of rap and got a very good response. Earlier, in February, I spoke in Minneapolis at the request of composer Bill Banfield, and got a similar response. Clearly, folks are getting sick of seeing women constantly insulted and degraded. In the June issue of Essence, Diane Weathers, editor in chief of the magazine, takes a very serious swing at this media monster. Essence is the oldest magazine for black women in this country, and it is exciting to think of its taking on something as injurious to civilized male attitudes as hip hop. I also have heard from various sources that we may see conferences being held on women and the crisis in hip hop and that protests in a number of places are in the planning. Oh, happy day! Black women have been so important to so many things that have bettered our nation. If they move on it, they will bring this monster down.
