  1. Maren, That was at at the Astor Place station on the 6 train during that time period.
  2. Tabla Beat Science, 'Live at Stern's Grove' , a double disc of musical gumbo, combining dub bass(Laswell), turntabling, Indian strings and percussion, topped by an Ethiopian vocalist(Gigi). Somehow it all works and is fun to listen to as well.
  3. That was great, Claude!
  4. This guy's been in space for 14 years- isn't he tired of eating out of tubes and being wieghtless?
  5. There's one less now- I just ordered one a few minutes ago. OH, MY WALLET!!!
  6. This sounds like you may need to contact Hiroshi Tanno at Early Records.
  7. I've also caught some nice music on the NYC subways, from rock bands to doo-wop to jazz. One night in particular I was on the way home, after a crazy day at work(phone ringing constantly, deadlines, paperwork up to my ears) & a tough evening at school, when the train made a stop and stayed there for a minute. There was a trio playing, two tenor saxes and a drummer, and they were going all out, playing free and reaching some levels of intensity that were just mind-blowing! Thunderous crescendos echoed out, and I was so enthralled I got off the train and listened for a while. Mind you, this was around 10:00 P.M., and I had left my house at around 6:30 A.M., so I was TIRED, but the music re-energized me. Of course I dropped a buck into the hat and wished I had more to give! It really can make your day so much better, and the serendiptiy of coming across something so good is absolutely wonderful. Kudos to the street/subway musicians!
  8. Is this thread just a cheap way to boost the ol' post count?
  9. How about 'Sketches of Spain'? Lush, romantic music, a little vino, a nice meal, she's putty in your hands!
  10. I once went out for a few with a group of people and one guy said he was having 'one beer'. he ordered a pitcher and drank it right out of the pitcher! But it was ONE drink...
  11. ' A Ballpark Tribute to Jane Jarvis'(Comes with overpriced hotdog!) 'Monk for Ice Skaters' How about a Hendrix tribute? Be part of the growing collection... Possible title: 'Honkin' on Hendrix' But seriously, have you guys thought about any Charles Earland? He's very greazzzzy, in fact, so greazzzzzzzzzzy that(Excuse me while I wipe my hands)
  12. Glad to hear ot was only a broken bike and not a broken Brandon. be sure to file a claim, and claim that your bike was pretty good- you should get a good new bike out of this. If that fails, well sue- everyone else does it! Call Shyster & Shyster and claim enough injuries for a new bike and tons of Mosaics!
  13. Derivative from soulless, one step below boring, a shadow of a cipher?
  14. I just got my copy of 'Boogaloo Sisters' last Thursday, and I'm liking it very much! It's got the relaxed/swinging thing that is not always so easy to achieve, and the groove is strong. In fact, the groove is so strong and it is soooo greazy that I needed de-greaser after a few spins of this disc. Nice job, guys!!!
  15. Berigan, As I recall, Oscar Gamble was a guy that would hit 20 homers with 300 ABs a year- if he got 500 ABs he would still hit 20 homers. As a fourth outfielder he was very good, but if he played every day he wouldn't have been as good as he was in a limited role.
  16. UA, If you like Indian there's a Mitali on Seventh Avenue South. it's a five or ten minute walk to the Blue Note from there. It's on 296 Bleecker Street. Telephone is (212)989-1367.
  17. Claude, Everytime I see that picture I imagine the black hat and the broom for her!
  18. Javier Vasquez, in his only appearance so far, pitched very well. He's going tonight against the Bosox, and if I were A-Rod I think I'd wear a batting helmet in the field also! Kevin Brown has pitched very well, proving he can beat the D-Rays in three different cities. If he stays healthy, he's still a very good pitcher. Mussina and Contreras worry me, though. Mussina was better the last time out, but he still hasn't pitched a good game. Contreras may have the same problem as last year; he'll be almost unhittable for 4-5 innings, then his pitches seem to flatten out and it's batting practice. But there are still about 153 games to go, so no need to worry yet.
  19. I'll take Sophia Loren now over BB now anytime.
  20. Tjazz, I agree with you there on picking the Pistons in the East. The Nets are just too banged up to go that far, with K-Mart & Kidd not 100%. I just don't think the Pacers will go that far, but I've been wrong mannnnny times before, too. The West is a much tougher call, as the Lakers, T-Wolves, Spurs could all take it. For a first round upset, though, I think Denver may surprise everyone. Now go straight to your bookie and bet the house the opposite way and you have a shot...
  21. I recall Miles' 'Get Up With It', which came out on vinyl in the early '70s, having sides that clocked in at slighty more than 30 minutes per side. The cuts in particular are 'Caypso Frelimo' & 'He Loved Him Madly'.
  22. I just picked up 'Ego' last week for $6.99, and I've really enjoyed it. I bought it out of teenage memory, as my sister had it when it first came out, and I remembered that 'Some Hip Drum Shit' was fantastic. The rest of the disc is really good if you can look past the vocals(Thankfully, not much of them) of TW. 'Electric Guitarist' is a very good disc, with an incendiary duet with McLaughlin and Cobham on 'Phenomenon:Compulsion'. The cut with TW and Jack Bruce, 'Are You the One' is also a keeper. Well worth getting.
  23. I got 'A Fickle Sonance'(Jackie McLean) 'Roots of Afro-Cuban Jazz' 'The Complete Atomic Basie' 'Back at the Chicken Shack'(Jimmy Smith) Total of $33.12, $8.28 per disc
  24. Rockefeller Center, Is your roomie Norman Bates?
