Tjazz, I agree with you there on picking the Pistons in the East. The Nets are just too banged up to go that far, with K-Mart & Kidd not 100%. I just don't think the Pacers will go that far, but I've been wrong mannnnny times before, too. The West is a much tougher call, as the Lakers, T-Wolves, Spurs could all take it. For a first round upset, though, I think Denver may surprise everyone. Now go straight to your bookie and bet the house the opposite way and you have a shot...

I recall Miles' 'Get Up With It', which came out on vinyl in the early '70s, having sides that clocked in at slighty more than 30 minutes per side. The cuts in particular are 'Caypso Frelimo' & 'He Loved Him Madly'.

I just picked up 'Ego' last week for $6.99, and I've really enjoyed it. I bought it out of teenage memory, as my sister had it when it first came out, and I remembered that 'Some Hip Drum Shit' was fantastic. The rest of the disc is really good if you can look past the vocals(Thankfully, not much of them) of TW. 'Electric Guitarist' is a very good disc, with an incendiary duet with McLaughlin and Cobham on 'Phenomenon:Compulsion'. The cut with TW and Jack Bruce, 'Are You the One' is also a keeper. Well worth getting.

B3-er, I regularly visit JC & AAJ as well as here, and this board is easily the best. The discussions are very lively, frequently humorous and almost always enlightening.The music threads are fantastic- I've learned so much since I started frequenting this board, and there are plenty of non-Blue Note topics in the music threads. The politics can get rather contentious, but that's how political discussions go sometimes, people tend to feel very strongly about their political views. Despite that, I think if you got Berigan, Weizen, Johnny E. & Mule together physically in one place, they'd find a way to get along and hang out together. As someone else posted, it's not perfect, but what is? It's great and that's more than enough for me. I'm a happy camper here.

Rainy Day, If I read a Berigan post at work, I have to quickly scroll past his 'bouncing' avatar, and Evan's nude woman with the moving legs is another one like that. I do cringe at times, but please don't take it all that seriously- I'm sure they don't, nor do they mean any harm.

We have some tasteless guys here, but if you overlook them, most of the guys here are pretty decent fellows. I welcome female participation here- the more points of view, the better.

On my job, I'm in a relatively open area, and we have a radio, but I have no control over what goes on it. Generally, it's either a classic rock station or a disco station, both of which are interminably boring(I might hear the same tune 6 or 7 times in a day!) and repetitive. We have a general rule that if something on the radio is horribly offensive to you, speak up and the station will be changed. It's not worth it for me to speak up(like everyone will listen to jazz!!!), so I just tend to tune it out. But I better have that Discman for the ride home so I can listen to some GOOD music.

UA, Of course, when you return home you will give us a full report, where you ate, what music stores you hit, what sights you saw, etc. I'm a NYC native, so I'm always curious as to what visitors think of my beloved city.

For mainstream jazz(very few imports), J&R on Park Row has lots of sales, so you can snag a good bargain on a lot of stuff there. I have lots of discs I got there for $6.99! It's right by the City Hall station on the 'R' train, which runs right to Times Square. Your girlfriend may want to shop, and Century 21 is just a few blocks away from J&R. Downtown Music Gallery is a very good store, especially for the more adventurous and imported stuff.

I saw a double bill in the 80s of Toshiko Akiyoshi and Mel Lewis at Town Hall in NYC. I was fortunate enough to get seats up close, and what Jim Sangrey said about the power, etc. of a big band is soooooooo true. You can really feel the music and the majesty of the music, besides appreciating the precision(and passion) involved in having 15-20 pieces cohere at the same instant. I also caught the Gil Evans big band a few times, and they were a loose group that could meander along and then WHOMP!, they hit you with a full blast of power and precision all at once. Perhaps the most memorable big band gig I caught was at Radio City around 1985. My wife and I went to see Manhattan Transfer, and the ads promised 'special guests'. They started with a doo-wop set, and brought out Frankie Valli for a set of Four Seasons tunes. OK, I figured we'd gotten our special guest and that was it. Later, after Valli left, Manhattan Transfer moved to the back of the stage where their band was, did a few tunes and split for an intermission. During the break, I noticed that the riser was down and wondered what was going to happen. Well, the lights dimmed, I heard a bunch of horns, the riser rose, and on it was the Basie band led by Thad Jones!!! They tore it up for a few tunes, and then Manhattan Transfer came out and did a set with the Basie band. The combination of the intense swing of the Basie band with the vocal harmonies of Manhattan Transfer was just astounding. It's a pity it wasn't recorded.

SS1, I have to go with Carmelo Anthony. To me, he's had a greater impact on his team's performance than James has, but there's not a great margin there and I could go with co-rookies. Detroit really blew it, IMHO, when they didn't draft Carmelo Anthony. Can you imagine them with him now, and the Wallaces? They might do something in the finals.

The American league Central is going to be tough, as Minny, the Chisox & even KC all have a reasonable shot to win there. If Detroit can play a tiny bit better than .500 ball the rest of the way they could even win the division! Don't count out Cleveland either, because the division winner may only have 85 wins. In the West I have to go with Anaheim, as long as they can keep Bartolo Colon a safe distance from the buffet table and Vladimir Guerrero close to a chiropractor. The East belongs to the Yanks, but I don't think that the Bosox will even make the playoffs. A lot of their players had career years last year and I doubt that will happen again. The wild card will go to either Seattle or Oakland. Now that you have my predictions, run straight to your neighborhood bookie and bet the house against me.
