NYCD is at 173 W.81st Street. They have used discs, so you may find something interesting. From the theater district you can take the 1,2, or 3 trains to 72nd St. and walk.

I listened to most of the first disc on my way to work this morning, and IT IS GREAT!!! For once, the AMG guide has it right. I can't wait to hear the rest of it. -
Jim, I'd like to ask you something about this set- can you drop me a line at pmquirk@attglobal.net Thanks much.

Not to beat a dead horse, but her's an interesting piece from this week's Village Voice: BOSTON'S TEASE PARTY Talk about throwing out the book when it's crunch time. Just so we're all clear on how absolutely mind-boggling Grady Little's decision was to stick with Pedro Martinez during the Yankees' fateful eighth-inning rally in the ALCS's Game Seven, here are a few facts informing his pitcher's 7.1 IP, 123-pitch performance. During the 2003 regular season, Martinez threw 2,838 pitches, an average of 15.2 per inning. He threw more than 105 pitches in only ten of his 29 starts, and he pitched more than seven innings in only five of them. He limited the opposition to a .201 batting average in innings one through six and a .207 BA on his first 105 pitches. However, opponents hit .364 against him after his 105th pitch. Want to know what "secret" source we uncovered these stats from? The team's very own Post-Season Media Guide! Guess "Goober" Grady didn't need no stinking numbers to get in the way of his managerial fiddling while Martinez got burned. One can only imagine what must have been going through the minds of Mike Timlin, Alan Embree, and Scott Williamson as they watched helplessly from the bullpen during the Martinez Massacre on River Avenue. Coming together as a relief corps only after Byung-Hyun Kim was scratched with a supposedly sore arm (from giving the Fenway faithful the finger after one too many blown saves, no doubt), this unheralded troika nonetheless co-authored quite a guidebook of its own against the Yankees: 13 innings, five hits, one run, two walks (one intentional), and 13 strikeouts. In most everyone's mind—except Little's, obviously—they would have gotten the Sox those five needed outs and a berth in the World Series, but by the time Embree and Timlin got into the game, the tide had irrevocably turned. In the Sox's somber locker room after Aaron Boone's pennant-winning homer off Tim Wakefield, Timlin was asked if the Yankees' winning so many championships while the Red Sox curse continued seemed unfair. The 37-year-old veteran, who in the first two rounds of the playoffs outpitched all other relievers (a Karim Garcia single was the lone hit he surrendered in nine-plus innings of pressurized work), just shook his head in response. "Fair?" he replied. "The best hitters in this game make outs seven out of ten times. Baseball's never been fair." You can make book on that one. —Billy Altman

Jim, if you don't mind my asking, what were they asking for the set?

One good place for discs is J&R Music world on Park Row near City Hall. It is easily accessible by the 'R' or 'N' train to the City Hall stop. They have a good jazz section and some of the best prices I have found. They frequently have sales n catalog items, so I picked up Mingus Ah-Um last week for $6.99! Usually, new releases are also marked down a few bucks for the first week or two of release. I would not recommend Tower unless you are unconcerned about price- their selection is good, perhaps better than J&R, but their prices are stratospheric. If your taste runs more towards the unconventional, try the Downtown Music Gallery, located on the Bowery(I believe the address is 342, but I'm not certain). You will find lots of Blood Ulmer, Cecil Taylor, etc. If you like thin crust pizza, go to John's on Bleecker Street between 6th and 7th Avenues. The #1 train will get you there, I believe the Sheridan Square stop. John's does not sell slices and they don't open until about 4:00 P.M. Their pizza is fantastic! If you like Barbeque, Virgils is on West 44th(#152) and has great barbeque- thier Memphis Ribs are great! Enjoy your visit!

So, are you saying that it's possible that Barry Bonds, who gained 50 pounds of muscle in his mid-30s, might be juicing? WHAT A SHOCK!!!

Just my next $0.02 regarding the losing managers in the ALCS & the NLCS. Both Baker & Little do a great job in motivating their players and keeping the whole enterprise going for a long season, but when it comes down to tactics and strategy they both are lacking(That's why Zim is on the Yankee bench- it's not just for good luck!)

McNabb is injured-I think it's a thumb. It's one of those injuries that doesn't quite keep him out of the lineup but does hamper his play. Add to that an offensive line that at times is.well. offensive and receivers that are household names only in their own household... Anyway, Rush Limbaugh, football expert sez he's overrated

Sports teams that you REALLY HATE!!!!!!

Romanowski is currently not playing because of a concussion and may retire. He's also being sued by one of his teammates because Romo tore off the guy's helmet during practice and then punched him so hard in the eye that the guy broke bones and is out for the year! Great teammate, huh? Romo's 'nutritional advisor' is also being investigated for possibly being involved in doping track and field athletes with a nearly undetectable human growth hormone(Barry Bonds, he of the 45lbs. of muscle gained in his mid-30s is also a customer of this clown). -
Let's hear it for your boys....

Baseball- Yankees(Since '64, so I have suffered through many losing years with little hope) Basketball- Knicks, but lately they play like they weigh 400lbs. and are playing in quicksand, so I watch the Nets a lot more now. NCAA Basketball- whoever is an underdog in March Madness- love to see those top seeds fall! Football- Giants(sigh) -
Are we talking kidney beans, garbanzo, cabbage, different days, farts with mutes, with McLaughlin, this could be a whole series of box sets. How about "New Directions in Flatulence"?

If anyone is starting a Miles tree(or an Ayler one, also) for those discs, please include me- I'd be happy to make discs and mail to two or three people. COUNT ME IN IF IT HAPPENS!

I'm a Yankee fan(OK, go ahead and flame away, but I've been a fan since '64, and I've suffered through the Horace Clarke era, Stump, etc.), and I think Little deserves the Baseball Bonehead of the Year award, with Dusty Baker a close second. I thought Pedro was coming out after seven, as he rarely pitches beyond the seventh inning anymore and his pitch count was way up there. Little had a rested bullpen and plenty of guys he could use. The bullpen had also performed beautifully, better than the Yank bullpen(With the notable exception of Rivera.) For Chrissakes, he could have gone matchup on each batter for two innings! Rare is the player who is honest about whether they are gassed or not- the overwhelming majority will say that they are fine and can get the next guy. Little managed himself out of the game, and Torre made a few good moves to save the game from being a rout. Once he saw that Clemens didn't have it, he turned to Musiina, who pitched brilliantly in relief. Bringing in Wells backfired, but I could see the logic behind it. Keeping in a guy who was getting rapped around like Pedro was is absurd. In '86, McNamara left Buckner in when he had a better defnsive player in Dave Stapleton on the bench because he wanted Buckner to be part of the on-field celebration- curse, anyone?

Scarface semmed pretty absurd to me, also, but there is one scene that makes me laugh whenver I think of it. When Pacino shoots the assassin who blows up the car with the entire family inside(wife and kids of the target), he looks at the hitman and says"You wouldn't listen to me- now look at you!" Hilarious!!! -
I'm a Yankee fan, but if they don't make it to the World Series, I would love to see a Cubs-Bosox series- somebody would have to win it, and either the 'Curse of the Bambino' would be over or the Cubbies would end nearly a century of futility. I was surprised to see the Cubbies win yesterday, because usually when a team has bases loaded and none out and doesn't score they lose. Kerry Wood had to deliver the blow with his bat, as if his excellent pitching wasn't enough!

I go there regularly, probably too regularly, as I work in lower Manhattan. They frequently have great sales, and I've shopped there for over 15 years and never had a problem with a return or anything else. If they run their mailorder like they run their store, you have nothing to worry about- they are a reputable and reasonable merchant(and their prices are wayyyy better than Tower!)

This topic is really going down the tubes(Counterclockwise in the US, clockwise in Australia) It may be time to flush it out of our systems. -

Have any of you good folks given a listen to 'Soul Vacinnation'? It's a live set from around 1999 that is very tight and carries tons of groove. The singer(whose name escapes me right now) does a fine job on the vocals, and Rocco kills as usual on the bass.
