  1. Can a liberal Quaker vote for Bush, or is that only conservative Quakers?
  2. Mine is: 1. Neo-Pagan (100%) 2. Unitarian Universalism (96%) 3. New Age (95%) 4. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (92%) 5. Liberal Quakers (91%) 6. Mahayana Buddhism (91%) 7. Theravada Buddhism (85%) 8. Sikhism (80%) 9. New Thought (72%) 10. Reform Judaism (71%) This is really strange as I was raised as a Roman Catholic.I don't practice anymore because of divorce, birth control, homosexuality, celibacy for clergy- the church sez go one way and I go the other entirely! It looks like I'm closer to a Buddhist. Neo-Pagan sounds like something cool to say at a party when asked for your religion- explaining that is another matter entirely. I live in Brooklyn and my looks suggest Jewish to manypeople. I couldn't tell you how many times people think I'm Jewish and start talking Yiddish or Hebrew to me. As soon as they see that puzzled look on my face they realize- GOYIM!
  3. DISCLAIMER: I HAVE NO FINANCIAL OR OTHER INTEREST IN THIS COMPANY, BUT THEY DO MAKE SOME GREAT SHIRTS Check out this site for some really cool t-shirts- I've ordered a bunch from them and their prices and service are excellent. Vey good quality tees, and where else could you get a SunRa shirt? http://www.gearink.com/
  4. I have an 11year old son & I've been married 16 years. I have a vague recollection of living before then, and I even have a birth certificate, etc. that prove I did exist before then. Those sleepovers should be called all-nighters! My son & I sometimes go to visit a friend of mine who has a son the same age, and we stay overnight. The next morning he usually looks like he's been up all night, but that's what kids do at that age. I love it!
  5. Many men gain weight after marriage- I've heard them called 'contentment pounds'. I was always around 160lbs. for a long time, then I got married(+10lbs. but I do all the cooking!), I quit smoking (+15 lbs.), my son was born & the stress of a new-born plus night school(+10lbs). Since then(1992), I gained a little bit more 'till I topped the scales at around 210lbs. At 5'8", I had a nice sized gut and butt, and a massive snoring problem to boot. My wife decided to go on Atkins to lose 10-15lbs, and I decided to go on it after she started. I've since gotten down to 169lbs, a mere 9lbs. over my fighting weight from 25 years ago. The weight loss(& some nose surgery to clear a nostril) led to no more snoring, happy wife, well-rested PhillyQ. If you're considering Atkins, you or your significant other have to be good in the kitchen! I'm a real good cook, so I've figured out how to make low-carb versions of some of my favorite foods with help from some websites and cookbooks. I indulge myself every Friday for pizza, and then jump back on the wagon for Saturday. The best part is that I enjoy my food and I am not starving.
  6. Ornette Coleman might want to have an electric guitar or(shudder) an electric bass at the gig, and then Wynton Marsalis would have to escort him out of a concert of his own music!
  7. Freddie Hubbard was on a Billy Joel album.
  8. I saw that band with Rufus Harley three times in one week at the Village Vanguard in 1974. For each gig, Rufus Harley wore a different outfit, one night looking like a doctor and I can't recall the other two, but he certainly stood out as a weird guy to me and my friends. In fact, the night he was in the hospital whites, as he came down the stairs to the VV, I was waiting on line on the stairs and I asked if there was a doctor in the house(18year old wiseguy line), and he said "Yes,a witch doctor!" He did play some smoking bagpipes, though, and that band(w Mtume, Cranshaw, Masuo, Lee, & Cowell) was excellent with Sonny.
  9. Have you considered Ebay? I've seen the set for around $40-$50, and with shipping it's still a lot less than 80-90 Euros.
  10. What makes Teo Macero's work even more amazing to me is the level of recording technology at the time. He must have spent many long hours splicing tape and doing other things that would be a snap with today's technology.
  11. There was an album by Arthur Blythe around 1978/9 titled 'In the Tradition'. I doubt that it's available on cd, but if you happen to come across it, grab it. Along with Blythe & Cowell are Fred Hopkins & Steve McCall, and they cover Jitterbug Waltz, Naima, One Mint Julep, etc. Cowell plays very well on this date, and his rhythm buddies push the music strongly. This is one of those dates that cries out for reissue on cd, but will Columbia ever do it?
  12. Dan, I agree with you that it's very unlikely that Garcia/Dellucci will be the rightfielders for the Yanks- Steinbrenner will probably throw gobs of money at Vladimir to get him to play in NY. That said, I looked at Garcia's stats for last year with the Yanks and he hit .305 with 6HRs & 21 RBIs in 151ABs. Dellucci did not fare well, but he had a bad ankle and switched leagues, so I would give him a mulligan for 2003. That's not bad production for that position, but Steinbrenner wants an Allstar at each position, so Garcia will be a spot duty guy and Dellucci will get splinters in his butt if he's not traded.
  13. No real boobs- they must look more like flotation devices.
  14. Yes, Soriano had an awful playoffs/World Series, but he's only 25 and many players don't hit their peak until they are 28 or so- cut the guy some slack already! Get him some solid coaching and get him to lay off that outside pitch, take some walks and he'll be fine.Trading Johnson would also be a mistake, as he is already a good hitter and will get better. Dan Gould was on the money in his assessment of Johnson. We should also keep in mind that Karsay may be healthy for next season, and when healthy he is a very good reliever. If the Yanks keep Gabe White and have Karsay, it's possible that they may have the same quality setup tandem that they used to have with Nelson & Stanton. Right field is not really as bad as one might think- a platoon of Delucci and Garcia could be very productive, and replacing them with Sheffield(35 with a crappy attitude) might be a very expensive mistake. Boone is arbitration eligible, so the Yanks could sign him for one year and see what happens- there aren't really a lot of alternatives out there beyond Mike Lowell. Whatever they do, the Yanks must sign Pettitte.
  15. WKCR sure does play some weird stuff sometimes- a couple of years ago they had a noise festival(I'm not making this up!) featurong recordings of,well, noise. I was in my car and I turned it up pretty loud and I had the windows open, so it sounded like I had car trouble- it was a good laugh to see the looks on people's faces when I stopped at red lights!
  16. NYCD is at 173 W.81st Street. They have used discs, so you may find something interesting. From the theater district you can take the 1,2, or 3 trains to 72nd St. and walk.
  17. I listened to most of the first disc on my way to work this morning, and IT IS GREAT!!! For once, the AMG guide has it right. I can't wait to hear the rest of it.
  18. Jim, I'd like to ask you something about this set- can you drop me a line at pmquirk@attglobal.net Thanks much.
  19. Not to beat a dead horse, but her's an interesting piece from this week's Village Voice: BOSTON'S TEASE PARTY Talk about throwing out the book when it's crunch time. Just so we're all clear on how absolutely mind-boggling Grady Little's decision was to stick with Pedro Martinez during the Yankees' fateful eighth-inning rally in the ALCS's Game Seven, here are a few facts informing his pitcher's 7.1 IP, 123-pitch performance. During the 2003 regular season, Martinez threw 2,838 pitches, an average of 15.2 per inning. He threw more than 105 pitches in only ten of his 29 starts, and he pitched more than seven innings in only five of them. He limited the opposition to a .201 batting average in innings one through six and a .207 BA on his first 105 pitches. However, opponents hit .364 against him after his 105th pitch. Want to know what "secret" source we uncovered these stats from? The team's very own Post-Season Media Guide! Guess "Goober" Grady didn't need no stinking numbers to get in the way of his managerial fiddling while Martinez got burned. One can only imagine what must have been going through the minds of Mike Timlin, Alan Embree, and Scott Williamson as they watched helplessly from the bullpen during the Martinez Massacre on River Avenue. Coming together as a relief corps only after Byung-Hyun Kim was scratched with a supposedly sore arm (from giving the Fenway faithful the finger after one too many blown saves, no doubt), this unheralded troika nonetheless co-authored quite a guidebook of its own against the Yankees: 13 innings, five hits, one run, two walks (one intentional), and 13 strikeouts. In most everyone's mind—except Little's, obviously—they would have gotten the Sox those five needed outs and a berth in the World Series, but by the time Embree and Timlin got into the game, the tide had irrevocably turned. In the Sox's somber locker room after Aaron Boone's pennant-winning homer off Tim Wakefield, Timlin was asked if the Yankees' winning so many championships while the Red Sox curse continued seemed unfair. The 37-year-old veteran, who in the first two rounds of the playoffs outpitched all other relievers (a Karim Garcia single was the lone hit he surrendered in nine-plus innings of pressurized work), just shook his head in response. "Fair?" he replied. "The best hitters in this game make outs seven out of ten times. Baseball's never been fair." You can make book on that one. —Billy Altman
  20. Jim, if you don't mind my asking, what were they asking for the set?

  22. One good place for discs is J&R Music world on Park Row near City Hall. It is easily accessible by the 'R' or 'N' train to the City Hall stop. They have a good jazz section and some of the best prices I have found. They frequently have sales n catalog items, so I picked up Mingus Ah-Um last week for $6.99! Usually, new releases are also marked down a few bucks for the first week or two of release. I would not recommend Tower unless you are unconcerned about price- their selection is good, perhaps better than J&R, but their prices are stratospheric. If your taste runs more towards the unconventional, try the Downtown Music Gallery, located on the Bowery(I believe the address is 342, but I'm not certain). You will find lots of Blood Ulmer, Cecil Taylor, etc. If you like thin crust pizza, go to John's on Bleecker Street between 6th and 7th Avenues. The #1 train will get you there, I believe the Sheridan Square stop. John's does not sell slices and they don't open until about 4:00 P.M. Their pizza is fantastic! If you like Barbeque, Virgils is on West 44th(#152) and has great barbeque- thier Memphis Ribs are great! Enjoy your visit!
  23. So, are you saying that it's possible that Barry Bonds, who gained 50 pounds of muscle in his mid-30s, might be juicing? WHAT A SHOCK!!!
  24. Just my next $0.02 regarding the losing managers in the ALCS & the NLCS. Both Baker & Little do a great job in motivating their players and keeping the whole enterprise going for a long season, but when it comes down to tactics and strategy they both are lacking(That's why Zim is on the Yankee bench- it's not just for good luck!)
  25. McNabb is injured-I think it's a thumb. It's one of those injuries that doesn't quite keep him out of the lineup but does hamper his play. Add to that an offensive line that at times is.well. offensive and receivers that are household names only in their own household... Anyway, Rush Limbaugh, football expert sez he's overrated
