This past Saturday I went to a high school fair in NYC(My son is in the 8th grade.), and it was a very crowded affair, with thousands of students, parents, etc. Numerous high schools had booths set up at this fair, promoting their school as the 'one' to go to, etc. My son is interested in going to Stuyvesant HS, a very rigorous academic school that requires a verrry high score on the standardized test for the specialized high schools in NYC. So, dutiful father I am, I go by the Stuyvesant booth to get any info they have and get a booklet. They list the usual Nobel prize winners(3 of them!) that you'd expect, a few actors, some in the business world, and... Thelonius Monk! He's a 1935 graduate. Now I REALLY want my son to go there

[ 8. A strange play in Wednesday night's Red Sox-Blue Jays game highlighted an obscure and, to our thinking, bizarre rule. With Boston's Gabe Kapler on first and one man out in the fifth inning, Tony Graffanino homered over the left field wall. Kapler, who was busting hard in case the ball didn't clear the wall, collapsed after rounding second with a ruptured left Achilles' tendon. After five minutes on the turf, Kapler was carted off the field. Pinch runner Alejandro Machado was allowed to replace Kapler at second base and trot home in front of Graffanino. According to the story on mlb.com, baseball's rule book includes this provision: "If an accident to a runner is such as to prevent him from proceeding to a base to which he is entitled, as on a home run hit out of the playing field, or an award of one or more bases, a substitute runner shall be permitted to complete the play." That just seems odd. When two outfielders collide and fall to the ground injured, for instance, the defense can't call timeout. A freak injury that occurs during a live play should be accepted as part of the game, albeit an unusual and unlucky part. I'd allow Kapler to be replaced, but Machado would have to stay on second. He's completely wrong here- a home run is really a dead ball once it clears the fence. -
Just my luck, part ---. The one weekend my wife decides to go away and leave me home with my son is, of course, the one weekend Organissimo plays in NYC! Drat! Curses! I hope you guys play a knockout gig!

She's fantastic. You know, I had kinda just said "to hell with it all" before I met her. I turned down dates, I just wasn't at all interested in meeting or hanging with anyone. I wrote a lot more and practiced a lot more, but outside of a few friends, I had no interest in being linked with anyone romantically. And then, all of the sudden, out of nowhere comes this woman who loves many of the same things that I do, that thinks that Vandermark is boring because he isn't willing to take enough chances musically (I busted out some Anthony Braxton, she dug that...), digs all of my friends, actually finds my quirks either amusing and/or adorable, is smart, thinks about religion the same way I do, reads the newspaper with fervor, and is just awesome in every way, and yet, in the ways in which it would be adventageous for her to be different, she is. So, yeah, I have found the woman that I do believe is absolutely perfect for me. Thanks for all of the kind words, folks!!! ← Is she a Chisox fan? Congratulations & all the best!

I'm glad that the Yanks didn't get Junior- he's had quite a few injuries in the last few years and I'm sure if the Yanks got him he'd blow out a knee, elbow, etc.

I went to NO for the first time in July on vacation and I fell iin love with the city. This is from a guy who has always loved NYC and always lived there. It's so horrendous and sad to see this beautiful city destroyed like that. The response from the Govt on all levels has been weak & ineffectual, and people in the affected areas should beware of W promising whatever is needed to rebuild the city- he pulled that same crap on NYC after 9/11 and then reneged on almost all of his pledges! My thoughts and prayers go out to all the people affected by this. I made a donation today to the Red Cross relief and my employer will match all donations by employees(My company employs about 85000 people.), so I'm hoping that many people donate and I've been pushing people at work to donate. -

While I agree that Bradley has some issues, Jeff Kent has been one of the biggest jerks in baseball for a long time. Is Kent a bigot? I don't know. But I do remember when he was a rookie with the Mets and a rookie prank was pulled on him(Iirc, his clothes were cut up), and he pitched a hissy fit. And then there was his relationship with Bonds, another jerk. That was one time that if a fight broke out I wanted both of them to lose. So maybe the truth is that Kent attracts other jerks who try to outjerk him. What were his parents thinking when they named him Milton with that last name? Did he hang out with the Parker Brothers?

Last night was salmon with dill, lemon slices, white wine, onion, and dry spices, all wrapped in aluminum foil and put on the grill. Together with a cucumber salad with dill and some brussels sprouts. Tonight was chicken cutlets with a bit of olive oil and dry spices on the grill and some steamed string beans with dill butter(I finally ran out of dill!).

BFrank, According to the CD Universe website, when you preorder they don't charge your credit card until they ship, so you're not out the money for a month and change.

Jim, Please let us know when the disc is released- I'd like to get one.

Congratulations Alexander- fill those heads with knowledge! -
Big Al, Berigan's on to something there- it really is worth it to trade some bats to get some good arms. First, though, you need a GM with some onions who's not afraid to mek some deals. I like what Omar Minaya has done with the Mets. He's pretty much made over the team by being agressive with his deals. Sure, some deals may fall flat, but he's at least trying to make the team better. Big Al for GM!!!!

I made sausage & peppers for dinner tonight, sausage on the grill and the peppers & onions on the handy side burner on the grill! Last week I made chicken & sausage gumbo- it was a lot of work, but it came out very nice and I actually made a decent roux. I may try another N'awlins recipe this weekend. Last night was teriyaki chicken cutlets on the grill and some steamed stringbeans with a dipping sauce of soy sauce, sesame oil & garlic powder.

Do you shred or use it as a wrap? ← Shred it- you get more fiber and the newsprint makes a lovely color for the dressing!
