'It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas... '

You have to keep in mind that for awhile in the late 70s/early 80s we had wild inflation of around 16%+. That could bring the average up to 5%.

Man, I love that disc. ← I play that disc sometimes for my rocker friends and they love it.

I think what Paul Secor suggested is a great idea. Also, try as hard as you can to spend as much time with her as you can, offer comfort, do some needed chores for her, etc. Even though I'm sure she knows it, show her that you care about her. Words are so inadequate for times like these, they all seem to sound so hollow and shallow compared to the reality. -
There's a f@*##* rat in my house!

I used to live in an apartment that had the occasional mouse, which my trusty cat would always catch at 2:00 AM on a weeknight. He wanted to play with them for awhile, so I would indulge him(After all, he did the hard work) for a bit and then it was hammer time! A decent hammer to the skull and the mouse is history- it's quick and the cleanup is minimal. -
What I've learned from 'diggin' on James Brown'

'Love Power Peace' is best heard in one sitting so that you can appreciate the dynamics of it. JB has the crowd screaming, and then suddenly he's into a ballad, then he'l jump into an uptempo tune. To my ears it's absolutely astounding how he has the audience in the palm of his hand and constantly reels them in and lets them out. I just picked up a double-disc of Defunkt, the group with Joseph Bowie, Lester's brother, and they were 80s and mightily funkified- worth a listen. -

Congrats to JazzyPaul & the Chisox! That was an impressive display of pitching, goog gloves and some timely hitting.

Well, technically, for arguing balls and strikes he doesn't need to be in your face... I can't count the times Larry Bowa was tossed while in the dugout, and then came out to get his money's worth... but sheesh, a game of that importance, let the freakin' players decide the thing, that's what people pay their money for, not the stinking umpire's bruised ego on display. Edmonds getting chucked was just because the ump was already pissed at La Russa. Still.....I think the Astros deserved to win with those great defensive plays in the 9th to make Lidge look better than he was this time! ← I'm not a great lip reader, but Edmonds said the 'magic'(F***) word- he denied any profanity, but it was clear to me that he said the word- that's an ejection any time, like Randy Johnson when he got tossed.

Many thanks for posting that- Elmo Hope is June 27.

I marinated some chicken parts in olive oil, lemon juice, fresh thyme and lots of garlic last night and baked it tonight. It disappeared quickly.

Lester Bowie
PHILLYQ replied to Lazaro Vega's topic in Jazz In Print - Periodicals, Books, Newspapers, etc...
I saw Lester Bowie once at a free concert in Brooklyn's Prospect Park with a huge band he put together called the 'Hip-Hop Feelharmonic'. It had about 25 players, complete with 2 or 3 drummers, a string section and everyone from Brass Fantasy. They opened with some stuff that was really 'out there', with Lester wearing his lab coat(I always thought 'mad scientist' when I saw this) and playing phrases, single notes, and choppy bits. The band then settled into a groove and Lester brought out half a dozen rappers! They rapped away over this huge band in a groove, and for a non-rap fan I really enjoyed it quite a bit. I came to realize, thanks to Lester, that context means a helluva lot when you present music, that if I had heard the rappers over a boombox it would have been boring to my ears, but over a live band it was a lot of fun. -
You'd either have to go to Connecticut or southward to play- it's not in NY.

I don't know of any jazz folks on June 27, in fact the only person of any note I know of is Hellen Keller.

I think his wife thought the board was turning him into a liberal and banned him from visiting here. ← Isn't his wife liberal? ← I thought his wife was a Christian conservative? ← I think she's a fundamentalist.

If they keep Wang & Chacon their rotation gets younger right there.

I don't know if Torre will be fired, but he might just quit. He may have hit the end of the line in putting up with Georgie Porgie's BS and constant criticism. I watch the Yanks nearly every game, and I thought that this year may have been Torre's best in terms of managing. After all, he lost plenty of pitching(Yanks used 14 different starters this year!) and had some glaring holes and still managed to get the team into the playoffs. As for Cashman, there's talk that the Phillies may be interested. It's a bit difficult to accurately judge Cashman, since every good deal is claimed by the Tampa clowns and every bad deal is his. I give him lots of credit for shaking the team up by promoting Cano(work in progress) and Wang & making the deals for Small & Chacon. It'll be interesting to see how he does on his own. -------------------------------------------------------------------- I believe JazzyPaul picked the Chisox & Cards for the World Series many many pages ago in this thread, and so far it's moving that way. I'd like to see the Chisox end their lonnnnng schneid and win a World Series. Bosox in 2004, Chisox in 2005, are the Cubbies next?

Well, then y'all are just about due for another one, doncha think? That said, I'm far from counting y'all out either. Boston's a proven post season contender, and I'm sure that you guys are all drooling over the idea of a rematch of last year's ALCS. So, I have to hope that Freddy works his magic on the road again today. Either Dan or I will be talking shit in about 2.5 hours or so, methinks... ← Well, start talking!!! Congratulations. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this last game once El Duque came in. If the Yanks get past the Angels, it definitely will be tough getting past the team with the best record in the AL. (To think that El Duque and especially Contreras might do us in, ugh!) ← El Duque should get the posteason Houdini award!!!
