I'm really enjoying his playing on the Lennie Niehaus Volume 5: The Sextet release which arrived in the mail recently.Kind of surprised to see no discussion here when I did a search. Anyone else here also enjoy his work and willing to offer a few thoughts and perhaps make a few recommendations on recordings I should make note of? I already own a good number of Rumsey Lighthouse All-Star recordings.

Great record, you will love it. The book series gets all the praise as it should but That's It gets over looked. Agreed. I already own all the book series and being a big fan want to get ahold of his other sessions as well. It is good.

Not sure if this was the appropriate section to post this topic, but what the heck? I came across this DVD while browsing on Amazon and seemed like a good one. I'm really interested in that whole scene at the Lighthouse and thought it might be interesting to hear from those who played there during it's heyday. Anyone own this? Your thoughts are appreciated.

I just wanted to add my thoughts here which are pretty much in line with others already expressed. I remember first getting into jazz over 20 years ago. Since I was attracted to the trumpet players, I immediately gravitated towards Freddie and Lee. I purchased a bunch of there albums. One day I was visiting a music store and came across A Night At The Cookers and thought DAMN, how bad could that be? For some reason at the time, I placed the disc back in the bin. It wasn't till later on that I heard some of the music from the album played on a jazz radio program. I thought it was horrible. Glad I placed that disc back in the bin.

The Who would certainly qualify when I saw them at Madison Square Garden in '79. A local show featured George Thorogood which was unbelieveably loud. I don't think my hearing has been the same since that show and that was over 20 years ago.

up....I've been listening to the Shelly Manne/Shorty Rogers session. WOW Fantastic music. It's hard to avoid comparing this, at least superficially, with some Hutcherson recordings made 10-15 years later. The Charles music sounds amazingly contemporary, elements of modal jazz, atonality. And Manne manages to swing like mad. Glad to come across this thread once again. I was over at David's "Ghost Of Miles" website yesterday(Night Lights) and listened to the excellent program he does on Charles. If you haven't already done so, please give a listen. David played a few tracks I believe from the above mentioned recording and I now have it on order. I'm really looking forward to hearing this one.

Job wise, I'm pretty secure(knocking on wood) and the wife is a nurse, no lack of demand there. My 401K is invested in the S&P 500. I have a pretty good idea what my losses are already without having to look at my statement. I also have an IRA which is invested in mainly small - mid cap companies which has done amazingly well the past 10yrs. or so and up to recently has weathered a good amount of the downside. I also own a couple international stocks funds. I believe I'm too heavily weighed in stocks, but I've known this for sometime and chose to do nothing. I have a goal to retire in 10 yrs. Hopefully recent events wont jeopardize this.

I've done a search on the Lennie Niehaus threads here and while I see his other Contemporary sessions mentioned for possible recommendations, this particular session isn't mentioned as often. Perhaps not as highly regarded? FWIW, the AMG website gives this a 5 star rating and rates it as a top pick. I've already purchased the first 2 volumes which should arrive in the mail shortly. I have a real good feeling I'll want to purchase the other volumes as well. I've seen this session selling for dirt cheap which is another reason I'm asking for your input. Again, your input is appreciated.

Is it just me or is Dick Stockton a terrible announcer? He seemed to make numerous flubs last night when calling the Dodgers/Cubs game for TBS. 1 Example: The Dodgers had just finished batting at the top of the 7'th innning. Stockton then announces we'll return for the top of the 8'th!

While driving down a dark country road at well over the speed limit, you hit a deer. Severely wounded and unable to move, you bleed to death in your car. Your dead body isn't discovered until the following morning.

I've been listening to WHPK in Chicago. They seem to play some pretty good jazz on Sunday mornings.

Anyone else enjoy this session as much as I do? I purchased this recording very recently and it's been getting ALOT of play the past several days. It's a 1964 session which also includes Monk Montgomery on bass and Steve Ellington on drums. Terrific stuff and highly recommended.
