  1. A few more Mosaics for the upcoming year. I'm interested in the Bennie Green, Charles Tolliver and Pacific Jazz Piano Trios Selects. I've heard some good stuff on the Randy Weston but admit my knowledge of him is extremely limited. I'll continue to delve deeper into the West Coast jazz scene of the 1950's. I've been interested in purchasing a bunch of VSOP titles of Richie Kamuca, Eddie Costa, Stan Levey, Conte Condoli, Victor Feldman, Frank Rosolino etc. Hopefully I can check out a few jazz shows. It's my dream to finally get to The Village Vanguard. Never been there before. It would be a dream come true.
  2. Merry X-mas and a Happy New Year to one and all.
  3. Any new news on Freddie's condition? I didn't realise Freddie was ill until I heard on Sonny Buxton's program on KCSM he made mention that Freddie was hospitalized.
  4. You won't regret that one, Tom! MG Actually it was your comments MG concerning the Grant Green release in the "deletions thread" which persuaded me into picking this one up. Thanks!
  5. A few Blue Note's slated for deletion soon: Grant Green - "Standards" Fats Navarro and Tadd Dameron: "The Complete Blue Note and Capitol Recordings" Lee Morgan - "Live at the Lighthouse" Lee Morgan - "Caramba!" Lee Morgan - "Charisma" Grant Green - "First Session"
  6. Sunny Buxton on KCSM FM. Since I'm rarely home on Saturday afternoons, it's always a special treat to be able to listen to his show.
  7. Surprised to see very few threads here dedicated to McPherson. Hope you guys don't mind me reviving this ancient one? In the past few days, I received in the mail McPherson's "Bebop Revisited. What a great album. Have to admit it wasn't till recently I became familiar with McPherson through the above Barry Harris date "Newer Than New". This album(Bebop) has proven to be a very pleasant surprise. I enjoy the front line tandem of McPherson and Carmell Jones along with fine support from Barry Harris. Probably the highlight from this date is the ballad "Embraceable You" which focuses on the playing of McPherson and Harris with Jones sitting on the sidelines. Very nice. Since I have the floor, do you guys have any thoughts on the albums "Con Alama" and "Live At The Five Spot"?
  8. Here's a nifty selection you all might run out and purchase. Faith Hill - Joy To The World Here's what Amazon says: The first holiday album from super-star Faith Hill, 'Joy To The World' is a joy to behold, featuring beautiful new versions of ten traditional and modern classics, complete with horns, strings, woodwings, percussion and chorales, much like the big-band orchestras of the 40's and 50's. One of the most popular music stars in America, Faith Hill celebrates the joy-and faith- of the season with 'Joy to the World.'
  9. Well if that's the worst this is a close second! Celine Dion - These Are Special Times
  10. Another vote for the Kenny Burrell disc.
  11. I'm a huge fan of Jackie Mclean and own both releases. It wasn't till recently I picked up "Jacknife" and I already owned at least a dozen or more recordings by him. I should have bought this one years ago. Gosh, you get Lee Morgan and Charles Tolliver on this date and one track "Soft Blue" you get both. Don't pass on either of these recordings up or you'll end up kicking yourself.
  12. Happy thanksgiving, guys and gals.
  13. Holy crap! I need this like I need a hole in my head. My wife is going to have me committed.
  14. How do I get my hands on that?
  15. I'll probably purchase at least one of the Silver releases. Stylings Of Silver has Hank Mobley and Art Farmer on the session. A plus for sure.
  16. Thanks fellas for your thoughts on Mother Ship. Sounds like I made a good choice. I'll also check that thread out.
  17. I just ordered Larry Young's "Mother Ship". Any thoughts on that one?

    Ray Crawford

Thanks for the input fellas on Ray Crawford. I've seen the Candid release available for a pretty reasonable price through Amazon Marketplace. Perhaps on the next round of purchases?

Really enjoyed his playing on the Gil Evans date "Out Of The Cool". a recent purchase. I wish there was more of him on that album. Any other sessions of note worth looking into? One date he led for the Candid label looks interesting which features Johnny Coles, Cecil Payne and Junior Mance.
  20. How do these guys sell these sets at such a low price as opposed to purchasing directly from Mosaic? Everything is intact? I'm definitely interested in knowing.
  21. That really sucks, Paps. You probably brought so much pleasure to your buddy. It's never easy to say goodbye and I've been through it a few times. Keep your friend alive in your memories. When enough time has passed, get yourself a new friend. The world needs more people like yourself.
  22. Thanks MG for mentioning the Bennie Green Select. Sounds like a great one after reading the writeup over at the Mosaic website. I have to admit I know little of Bennie with the exception of the above Quebec release.
  23. Glad to help out! Out of curiousity since I've seen this in other threads, if one were to rank the 6 Volumes of the Dream Band material, how would YOU rank them?
  24. Great to come across this thread. I hope folks here don't mind me reviving it? A fellow board member recommended me to check out Terry's big band performances. Especially since I've been getting into the West Coast thing in a major way as of late. Had the opportunity to sample some of the tracks over at AMG and already plan to purchase some of his Dream Band releases in the near future. Some fantastic lineups on these dates!
  25. I'm not sure what I can say about this release except for WOW! The lineup is as follows: Ike Quebec - tenor sax Stanley Turrentine - tenor sax Bennie Green - trombone Sonny Clark - piano Milt Hinton - bass Art Blakey - drums Recorded January 20, 1962 This is a cd borrowed from a jazz friend of mine. The album opens with an incredibly bluesy "See See Rider". Wow was my initial reaction. The album continues with "Congo Lament", "Que's Pill's", "B.G.'s Groove Two", "I.Q. Shuffle" etc . This is a side of Ike Quebec I'm not familar with. The music really swings. I believe the fact why I'm really enjoying this album is because of THE LINEUP! Turrentine, Clark who's always great IMO and especially Bennie Green really adds something to this date. The first half of the album features the above musicians in a sextet, while the remaining tracks features Quebec with the rhythm section in a more balladly mood. I have to say I'm absolutely dumbfounded this album is out of print. This has immediately become my favorite Ike Quebec date, without question. Does anyone else own this album and wish to add a few thoughts? What a great date!
