  1. I had no idea he was so ill. I attended a concert this past summer which was to celebrate I believe David's 75'th birthday. He was unable to perform due to illness. Joe Lavano and Frank Wess stood in for him. R.I.P. David.
  2. I happened to run across this sad news over at the Jazzcorner Speakeasy: It is with great sadness that I let you all know that David Newman succumbed to pancreatic cancer yesterday. A kind and gentle man, and a heck of a sax player, he will be missed by many. More information will follow. 3. Everything points to a big Steelers victory in the upcoming Super Bowl. That said, one thing you just can't count out is Kurt Warner. Love him/hate him, the man is playing with a huge amount of confidence right now and has played on the big stage and shouldn't in no way be underestmated. Looking forward to a competitive game.
  4. Happy birthday, Jeff. Hope you have a good one.
  5. As a mailman, while it's been difficult these past few days with the cold temps, at least there wasn't much of a wind and most importantly the sun was out. Maybe around 15 degrees tops during the day and close to 0 at night. For those who live in cold weather climates, a good pair of Under Armour really helps. It may cost you some bucks but it keeps you damn warm.
  6. Thanks fellas for the input concerning the Bennie Green Select. Looks like Mosaic has made itself a sale.
  7. I've been interested in the Bennie Green release among others. A few thoughts would be appreciated.
  8. "Concierto De Aranjuez" by Jim Hall from the album "Concierto". Chet Baker's playing here I can only describe as haunting. Paul Desmond whom I've never been a huge fan of, is absolutely perfect here. Played this ALOT this past week.
  9. If you like Destination...Out! You'll LOVE One Step Beyond. Agreed, as great as 'Destination....Out' is, 'One Step Beyond' is clearly better to me. If I could only have one Jackie McLean CD (what I sad thought!), this would be the one, as great as his other stuff is. This album is a landmark in jazz history. It, 'Destination Out!", Grachan Moncur's 'Evolution' (all from 1963), and 'Action' (from 1964) are the recordings that McLean did with Bobby Hutcherson, and all are spectacular. 'Action' has Charles Tolliver on the front line with McLean, and the others have Moncur, with Lee Morgan added on 'Evolution'. Amazing stuff. Amen and preach brother! :tup Jackie' mid 60's Blue Note's are just incredible. I have all of them, at least the ones that are still available. The Moncur "Evolution" is in my queue over at yourmusic.com and should be shippped soon. Some real good music coming my way.
  10. Thanks David for making this show available for us listeners and fans of Freddie Hubbard. I've been pretty much listening to the Freddie tribute on WKCR the past few days, but will defintely check out your show in the next few days.
  11. I've been listening to a decent chunk of the broadcast and while it may be obvious to some, Freddie made a hell of alot of great music. I'm really enjoying the WKCR tribute. A first class station.
  12. Thanks for all the great music, Freddie. You'll always be one of my favs.
  13. Happy birthday, Jeff! Let's get together soon.
  14. I'm really looking forward to picking up Jackie's "One Step Beyond".
  15. A few more Mosaics for the upcoming year. I'm interested in the Bennie Green, Charles Tolliver and Pacific Jazz Piano Trios Selects. I've heard some good stuff on the Randy Weston but admit my knowledge of him is extremely limited. I'll continue to delve deeper into the West Coast jazz scene of the 1950's. I've been interested in purchasing a bunch of VSOP titles of Richie Kamuca, Eddie Costa, Stan Levey, Conte Condoli, Victor Feldman, Frank Rosolino etc. Hopefully I can check out a few jazz shows. It's my dream to finally get to The Village Vanguard. Never been there before. It would be a dream come true.
  16. Any new news on Freddie's condition? I didn't realise Freddie was ill until I heard on Sonny Buxton's program on KCSM he made mention that Freddie was hospitalized.
  17. You won't regret that one, Tom! MG Actually it was your comments MG concerning the Grant Green release in the "deletions thread" which persuaded me into picking this one up. Thanks!
  18. A few Blue Note's slated for deletion soon: Grant Green - "Standards" Fats Navarro and Tadd Dameron: "The Complete Blue Note and Capitol Recordings" Lee Morgan - "Live at the Lighthouse" Lee Morgan - "Caramba!" Lee Morgan - "Charisma" Grant Green - "First Session"
  19. Sunny Buxton on KCSM FM. Since I'm rarely home on Saturday afternoons, it's always a special treat to be able to listen to his show.
  20. Surprised to see very few threads here dedicated to McPherson. Hope you guys don't mind me reviving this ancient one? In the past few days, I received in the mail McPherson's "Bebop Revisited. What a great album. Have to admit it wasn't till recently I became familiar with McPherson through the above Barry Harris date "Newer Than New". This album(Bebop) has proven to be a very pleasant surprise. I enjoy the front line tandem of McPherson and Carmell Jones along with fine support from Barry Harris. Probably the highlight from this date is the ballad "Embraceable You" which focuses on the playing of McPherson and Harris with Jones sitting on the sidelines. Very nice. Since I have the floor, do you guys have any thoughts on the albums "Con Alama" and "Live At The Five Spot"?
  21. Here's a nifty selection you all might run out and purchase. Faith Hill - Joy To The World Here's what Amazon says: The first holiday album from super-star Faith Hill, 'Joy To The World' is a joy to behold, featuring beautiful new versions of ten traditional and modern classics, complete with horns, strings, woodwings, percussion and chorales, much like the big-band orchestras of the 40's and 50's. One of the most popular music stars in America, Faith Hill celebrates the joy-and faith- of the season with 'Joy to the World.'
  22. Well if that's the worst this is a close second! Celine Dion - These Are Special Times
  23. I'm a huge fan of Jackie Mclean and own both releases. It wasn't till recently I picked up "Jacknife" and I already owned at least a dozen or more recordings by him. I should have bought this one years ago. Gosh, you get Lee Morgan and Charles Tolliver on this date and one track "Soft Blue" you get both. Don't pass on either of these recordings up or you'll end up kicking yourself.
