  1. I agree w/ your logic, and I was pulling your leg. I did badly want the set for $250 or whatever I bid. The Rivers set is expensive because of the fabulous alt takes from FSS, and the terrible original LP issue of Dimensions and Extensions. Great original copies of FSS and Contours can easily go for $75-125, so there you go.... (I have one of each, and a mint A New Conception, so if I land a set I'll be selling those.) Dealers tell me they are surprised that the Rivers set has such great resale value. Same w/ the Fuller. I think BN lovers generally recognize that the Curtis Fuller set is so amazing, and because The Opener tends to be quite rare in top notch condition, same with the Japan LP Two Bones, they value that set a great deal as well. Dan
  2. The Rivers and Curtis Fuller sets have been going for inordinate high sums for a few years now. I have been stalking both, can't seem to land either one for a good price, though I was perversely happy to bid up the recent Rivers (for our porcy).
  3. I agree that rock is not the right content for huge anthology sets, unless we are talking a lot of unreleased stuff, live curios, etc. There are SO FEW rock bands that can sustain two+ hours of straight through listening, in my snotty opinion. That was part of the reason I moved on to jazz. And that's why I love the Dylan series and the Beatles Anthology.
  4. Maybe Sue Mingus can burn you a copy. She probably "owns" that too.
  5. I lost a good friend to suicide. We were in our mid-twenties. He tried to get help, but he couldn't resist this powerful urge in the end. He was never prescribed any medication, only therapy. Suicidal people deserve the help of medical doctors most of all -- there is altered brain chemistry at work in many cases, or so I believe. I have noticed sometimes that when I work out to exhaustion, or when I feel a certain type of strong nausea, I can feel a change in my brain that is powerful, emotionally negative, temporary and perhaps bio-chemical. It's like a dark cloud or a sadness. It's usually very brief (5-10 minutes) and because it is so overt and reflects such an extreme change in mood, it's like an analog to a chemically induced high (which are almost twenty yrs in my past finally...). When drugs are at work, even the organic chemistry of our brains, we may be helpless, or we could benefit from professional care and/or medication. I believe the worst suicidal cases among us however, are probably blameless for their actions.
  6. I think I found one to buy, thus I will still have the Shaw for trade possibly.
  7. I loved the show last night, its a great reminder of this country's steady betrayal of the urban poor and the cities, as well as a movie with fine music. I see the Isaac Hayes was released to CD some time ago, looks tempting.
  8. No rep at all. A six or seven year difference might make a difference in how well the disc ages. There were improvements in CD manufacturing over time, yes? And I have a few old discs from way back that skip occasionally, or don't play in the discman etc.
  9. No I never have, but I have at least one friend who is not computer-savvy, and he does it mostly on the some Jerry site. He says it is time-consuming to execute the steps, but it does work well and he finds it worthwhile. He also found a JGB show (Waterbury CT '77) for which he searched for years, so he was thrilled.
  10. I see copies on Amazon/Half.com for $30-40, which leads me to believe it could be out there for less. Anybody want to deal their copy? I'll bid a like-new Gene Shaw "Carnival Sketches" (japan, 20-bit) for the Rivers blue-on-white CD '96 reissue. Thanks, Dan
  11. Dylan Bootleg series vol 1-3 Beatles Anthology discs, all 3 sets I have heard that Hendrix set is a major winner too.
  12. Just a Honeymooners fan here. And, ahhhhh but I was so much older then I'm younger than that now. Dan
  13. Rotel yes, Sony no. I honestly don't think Sony cares much about the sound of their gear. I swear by Rotel for value, good detailed sound. NAD sounds good, but their CD players are suffering quality problems currently. I have heard this from a few dealers, and seen posts on this board. You might try talking to Cadence / North Country Audio for some ideas, nice people.
  14. Thanks I thought I checked there as well. I will be thrilled to buy Contours, a great record that stands with the best BN sessions, imso. I was hoping for Where Is Brooklyn as well, as MC indicated it could happen soon. As for the rest of the Sam Rivers BN music, let's hope those get reissued too. We love Sam.
  15. I could swear somebody just recently posted something about upcoming BN reissues, including the great criminally neglected Contours by Sam Rivers. Was it in the reissue thread, and if not how come?
  16. Not a mix at all but the back to back enhanced/expanded (RVG) CDs of the Ornette Coleman trio at the Golden Circle. Driving music indeed.
  17. For rare vinyl, I recommend a face to face transaction and a quick listen to judge the general quality of the vinyl. About a third of the time I pass after a few minutes. You can usually tell if a record has been reasonably well cared for in person. Ebay is the last good option, imho. I gotta go now, there is an Ebay LP auction I need to catch....
  18. Go for the MFSL set if you can find one. Amazing, stunning listening experiences. Worth every penny up to say $2000 for a really mint set.
  19. Rename this thread the Bad Dream. One would think Mosaic would cling to an all-analog process chain where possible. So how about the Cherry set? I sold my CD set last yr, kept the LPs. (That was my only dupe.)
  20. That rainbow means the meat has been blessed by Jesse Jackson. If you consume enough of it, you'll discover kindness, compassion and social equity, so keep eating.
  21. How is his Harold Arlen songbook on Verve? I have never found a curiousity for OP or much of anything so straight-ahead, but there is a paucity of good Arlen collections so what the heck. Anybody know OP's?
  22. www.philzone.com I haven't seen any new tour dates for awhile but they will be back in the late Fall I would assume.
  23. Good post akanalog. The space was the place for improv, from '78 onward, and I generally loved it at the shows. Nice jams with Hornsby too in 1990/91, and some offbeat set lists here and there. Try a taste of Phil and friends, its really an awesome tribute band, celebrating the 68-70 Dead. (only half kidding...) They are fun, and they make it up as they go. I do heartily recommend seeing Phil play Golden Road, The Eleven, and Viola Lee Blues before you die.
  24. I'd rather not have it on my system, but if it is currently blocked, then it may be harmless. Norton and all the big brands can detect some, block some, and remove none.
