Happy Birthday D. Boon!!

The DMG newsletter this week had a some bad news about Tonic..... FLASH NEWS!!! It seems Tonic, one of our favorite places, will be closing for good on April 15th, unless radical economic help is forthcoming. Some notable shows that are upcoming [and not yet known to be cancelled]: Tuesday Apr 4th, 8PM ADACHI TOMOMI - Performer, composer, sound poet and visual artist from Tokyo, known for his versatile style. He will present solo improvisations with combinations of voice, computer, self-made instruments (electronic/amplified objects) and an original sensor system named "infrared sensor shirt." His performance is characterized by a sense of humor and a singular intensity with visual pleasure. His CDs have been released from naya records and Tzadik. Thurs & Friday April 6 + 7, 8 PM & 9:30 PM MISHA MENGELBERG & ICP ORCHESTRA - Four Shows In Two Nights!!! "My main thought about the ICP is: How do they do it? The show is always radically different. But perhaps what amazes me most is the way they wander in and out of strictly composed material. The crux of what they do, as the name implies, is improvisation. And they do it as well as anyone out there."--Dave Douglas Wed April 11th, 8PM PETER BROTZMANN-MARINO PLIAKAS-MICHAEL WERTMULLER Peter Brotzmann (Germany, reeds) - the living legend of the European new jazz. A founder of European Free Jazz movement, his work includes collaborations and recordings with Last Exit (with Bill Laswell, Sonny Sharrock and Ronald Shannon Jackson), Evan Parker, Misha Mengelberg, and Borah Bergman. Recent projects include Die Like a Dog (with William Parker, Hamid Drake and Toshinori Kondo), his homage to Albert Ayler, the Chicago-based Brotzmann Tentet and many more.

Going to see this on Monday... Monday, March 26 | 8pm INSTANT COMPOSERS POOL (ICP) ORCHESTRA with Misha Mengelberg, piano; Michael Moore, saxophone/clarinet; Ab Baars, saxophone/clarinet; Tobias Delius, tenor saxophone; Wolter Wierbos, trombone; Thomas Heberer, trumpet; Mary Oliver, violin/viola; Tristan Honsinger, cello; Ernst Glerum, bass; and Han Bennink, drums Bodek Lounge at Houston Hall | 3417 Spruce Street Free Admission Read the Philadelphia City Paper preview: http://www.citypaper.net/articles/2007/03/22/all-of-a-sudden Read the Philadelphia Weekly preview: http://philadelphiaweekly.com/view.php?id=14266 "As much as any group anywhere, the Instant Composers Pool Orchestra encompasses a full range of modern musics: Ellington and Monk, Kurt Weill and European dance band music of a lost age, Weberny chamber music, South African kwela, free improvisation, conducted improvisation, interactive games, counterpoint and simultaneity, catchy melodies, pastel harmonies, order and built - in chaos," writes Kevin Whitehead in his book, New Dutch Swing. "ICP's mix is perplexing in the best sense: the music doesn't give up its secrets on first hearing, or second, or third. It keeps you coming back. This is jazz/improvised music at its most deft and sophisticated." Together since 1967, the 10-piece ICP is co-led by Misha Mengleberg and Han Bennick and features some of the best Dutch and European improvisers performing today.

Over at the JC there is a report that Tyrone Hill has died. http://www.jazzcornertalk.com/speakeasy/sh...ad.php?p=604890 Major bummer. I saw him perform many times as a member of the Arkestra (w/ and post Sun Ra) and other combinations of Arkestra alumni. But mostly I'll remember seeing him play for change on the streets of Center City Philadelphia. Always a joy no matter what.

Buying a house without real estate agents
Chalupa replied to Peter Johnson's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
You'll be fine. I've done it twice w/ no problems and if a lunk head like me can do it you can too. Just make sure to have a lawyer to go over everything before you sign. You owned a house in Philly, right? So you know all of the hoops that you need to jump through. If you don't know what to do your mortgage lender will. Both times I bought, the lender was on me like a hawk. Nag, nag, nag. Just make sure that your sales agreement is a contingent upon A. the property passing a home inspection AND B. you getting a mortgage. I would also recommend going to the local bookstore and looking at a couple of home buying books. Good luck. -
So how will this effect podcasters???

I have. Make sure you get a good real estate lawyer. I mean, you should have one anyway but definitely get one in case you have any questions. -
This is truly genius. My 2.5 year old son is on a Dr.Seuss kick right now.

Ditto for all that, except the Shepp.

"The right-hander threw 47 pitches, 31 for strikes, including a first-pitch strike to 10 of 12 batters. .....His fastball topped out at a brisk 151 -- that's kilometers per hour, as measured by Japanese TV. It translates to 94 mph." "My readiness for the season is difficult to judge from the outside," Matsuzaka said through a translator. "I'm probably 40 to 50 percent there." Only 40-50% "there" after that performance????

Dan, no comment about this??? http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/spring2007/n...tory?id=2789755

Awesome story. Randy, outside of Organissimo and the previously mentioned album, have you played on anything else??

The last 10-12 years of her performing career she led the house band at Ortlieb's here in Philly. The other members were Mickey Roker on drums and Arthur Harper on bass. Great band. Anyway, I must have seen her play at Ortlieb's more than 25 times - always on piano(Steinway). My friends and I would lament that it would be great to hear her on the B3!! Alas.
