  2. From CNN... CBS "60 Minutes" correspondent Ed Bradley has died from leukemia at the age of 65. Bummer. I liked him.
  3. Strange that we should be talking about Burrell - he's the lead story on espn's baseball page right now. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/stor...&id=2653713
  4. The "K-Fed" moniker is sooo last week. It's "Fed-Ex" now.
  5. Although anyone dealing for Sheffield gets a proven big bat for $13m, but with $4.5m deferred, or $8.5m now. After a year they can let him go. The Phillies are dying to get rid of Burrell, but doesn't he have a big contract with not much production lately? He may be tough to move. Even though a lot of people are in love with Soriano for his power/speed numbers, he doesn't get on base a lot and he's not much with the glove. It seems he still can't lay off balls around his ankles. Love Sheffield's hitting but he's got too much baggage. It's no secret he's not a popular guy in the club house. Burrell is staying in Philly because he is owed $27M over the next two seasons AND has a no trade clause(Thanks Ed Wade!). Not too mention he had some ridiculous avg. of .150 something w/ RISP w/ 2 outs. Agree on Soriano. He puts up great #'s but he whiffs a lot. I saw him strike out 3 times in one game vs. the Phils this summer. Phillies have too many undisciplined batters that strike out - they don't need another. But if he hit 40+ HRs playing 1/2 his games in RFK imagine how many he would get in Philly. Remember he was the first MLB player to have 40 doubles, HRs, and SB in a season. So you can see why Pat Gillick might be interested. I'd really like to see Gillick spend the money to get another starter. But there's mighty slim pickin's this year.
  6. The only way the Phillies would take Sheffield would be for the Yanks to take Burrell. Lots of talk about the Phils going after Soriano. Davey Lopes, the Phils new 1st base coach, coached him this past season in Washington and loves him.
  7. Dan is correct. At this point I've transferred all the tapes (including multi-tracks) to digital. Just that part ate up a grand. Next is mixing/editing/mastering. It will probably take $5000 to get the first thousand pressings on my basement. Wow, I had no idea. Thanks for the reply.
  8. Well if it's a money issue maybe you could raise the cash via a pre-order sale?? I think the board members could be counted on for 30+ seats. Did I just write "30+ seats"?? Silly me, the House take over has me all giddy. I meant 30 copies. Assuming you would charge $15 that should yield about $450. Would that be enough?? Oh wait that's probably a 2 disc set, right? So maybe you charge $20 or $25 which would put you over $600. Something to consider. Or not.
  9. Chuck, what's the latest on Nonaah cd issue?? Any plans for the Charles Tyler??
  10. Geez, I guess I've been lucky. I've probably bought 25-30 cds from them and have never had a problem. I order through half.com though I'm not sure if that makes any difference. Then again "rare" for me has been the "Free America" or BYG titles.
  11. Actually IIRC it was torrented last winter before the cd came out. Ditto for that Coltrane Showboat Philly cd. I'm wondering if their source was DaD.

  14. This is gonna be fun... Roscoe Mitchell returns to Philly! SoundExchange_2007 Friday, April 20 | 8pm Horns of Hathor featuring Roscoe Mitchell and Samir Chatterjee with Horns of Hathor: Pauline Oliveros, electronics/accordian Ione, voice and Roscoe Mitchell, reeds Samir Chatterjee, tabla +Sunday, April 22 An Evening of New Works by Pauline Oliveros and guests Details TBA Event Description: SoundExchange, presented by the American Composers Forum, Philadelphia Chapter, and Ars Nova Workshop is an annual event designed to bring leading composers representing the most influential and distinct stylistic schools to Philadelphia with the purpose of presenting new work and conducting artist workshops with local composers and performers. This year, SoundExchange has selected the composer/master improviser Pauline Oliveros and her Deep Listening Band to hand-select a Philadelphia-based ensemble as well as four local composers. This SoundExchange Ensemble will develop a specific practice through a series of workshops with Oliveros and her unique theories and approaches to performance. SoundExchange programs feature the work of a master artist along side Philadelphia’s brightest emerging artists and seasoned musicians. Performing together exclusively for this engagement will be a Philadelphia electro-acoustic ensemble that will present four new experimental compositions plus a piece by Pauline Oliveros. Since the 1960's Pauline Oliveros (b. 1932) has influenced American music profoundly through her work with improvisation, meditation, electronic music, myth and ritual. She has been celebrated worldwide, and many credit her as the founder of present day meditative music. One of the original members of the Tape Music Center at Mills College (along with Morton Subotnick andTerry Riley), her outstanding body of work includes collaborations with Anthony Braxton, Sonic Youth, Roscoe Mitchell and Alvin Curran, among many others. Pauline Oliveros' life as a composer, performer and humanitarian is about opening her own and others' sensibilities to the many facets of sound. All of Oliveros' work emphasizes musicianship, attention strategies, and improvisational skills. She has been celebrated worldwide. During the 1960's John Rockwell named her work Bye Bye Butterfly as one of the most significant of that decade. In the 70's she represented the U.S. at the World's Fair in Osaka, Japan; during the 80's she was honored with a retrospective at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C. The 1990's began with a letter of distinction from the American Music Center presented at Lincoln Center in New York. In 2000, the 50th anniversary of her work was celebrated with the commissioning and performance of her Lunar Opera: Deep Listening For_tunes. Oliveros’ work is available on numerous recordings produced by companies internationally. John Cage said of Oliveros, "Through Pauline Oliveros and Deep Listening I finally know what harmony is…It's about the pleasure of making music."
  15. Plus that would presumably be $300 out of your budget for buying new cds. Correct.
  16. I agree that burns of in print items are a no no. However....What about burns of l-o-n-g out of print material????? Say, something like Black Ark??? Instead of offering a hypothetical situation I'm going to give a real example. I've spent the past few months trying to track down a copy of Black Ark(in lp or cd format) on Ebay. No such luck. The last lp went for $153 and the last two cd auctions went for $305 and $309. That's a lot of money. A lot of money that Noah Howard is never going to see while this recording remains OOP. Now what if someone, as myself, made an attempt in good faith to obtain a copy through the legitmate secondary market fails to do so?? Am I to spend the rest of my life not being able to hear this music?? That doesn't really seem fair.

  20. Strange that the top two U.S. cities rated the "most dangerous" should also finish #1 & #2 in baseball..... http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...6103000108.html http://www.morganquitno.com/cit07pop.htm#25
  21. While I think going with Romo is the correct move for Dallas, I have to question the timing. The kid had only completed two passes for his entire career and you stick him into a tight game(they were only down by 5 points) on Monday Night Football??? WTF?? That just looked like total desperation on Parcells part and the Giants, rightly, smelled blood. Parcells can't go back to Bledsoe after that benching. He should bench the O lone coach. What a disgrace.
  22. I can't find the original thread where you guys were discussing Ghana Soundz but I just wanted to say that after reading all the positive reviews I ordered copy. Anyway, it arrived today. I'm about half way through the disc right now and I just wanted to say this is tremendous music. Thanks for the rec.
  23. Healing vibes for (((((Helen and Lon)))))
  24. MP3's Not a fan. I would only get a MP3 recording if it was the only way to obtain a copy of a performance. I do find them fatigue inducing after extended periods of listening. Where I really notice the compression is on the drums, especially the crash cymbal. HOWEVER...... I have no problem w/ people converting files for their own personal use. They're your ears and if MP3s sound good to your ears I say grab as many as you can. (N.B. I have to admit that the AAC encoded files on my wife's Ipod sound pretty darn good.) What gets my goat is when people distribute MP3s w/out being upfront about it. I can't tell you how many times I've seen shows up on the Dime and the show is 70+ minutes long yet the cd torrent is only ~300mb. There's no way there isn't a mp3 generation in there. That's why I like that speeding arrow site. The guy is totally upfront about the music on his site being compressed. I mean what's really important here is that the music is getting distributed and listened to. Better to have an inferior recording then no recording at all.
