That's a fucked up page. How can the Red Sox be 3.5 games ahead and have the same magic number as the Rangers? Since when does a team that isn't in the lead for a playoff spot even have a "magic number"? According to MLB.com, any combination of Red Sox win and Rangers losses totaling 30 will give them the wild card. How the hell does this site come up with 39 for both teams? Meantime, on the field, the Rangers may be in the middle of a team and season defining game: Down 11-0 in the fifth, they trail the Jays only 11-9 with eight outs to go and a runner at first. Well, that site's "magic number" refers to winning the division - not the WC spot. Yes it would have been better if they had a magic number for the WC spot too. So if you take the number of games yet to play(32 for Boston and 33 for Texas) and add 1 and then add the differential in the lost column from the division leader(6 for Boston and 5 for Texas) you arrive at 39 for both teams. From my shaky math skills I would say that Boston's WC magic number number is 32+1 - 3 = 30 and Texas is 33 +1 + 3 = 37. Of course those numbers will change depending on the outcome of the Jays/Rangers contest. Texas down by one run now in the 8th.

More than a little freaked out about the possibility of the Giants wining the WC. Especially now that Cliff Lee appears to be human after all. If the Rockies don't get the WC the best hope for the WFC is to finish 2nd to the Dodgers overall and play the Cards.

Up. http://www.lvrj.com/neon/49683492.html Vinyl records -- newly pressed ones, not vintage or pre-owned albums -- are making a comeback. A small comeback, a minor comeback., but a comeback nonetheless. According to the Recording Industry Association of America -- the trade group whose members include record manufacturers -- about 2.9 million LPs and EPs were shipped in 2008. In comparison, about 385 million CDs were shipped and consumers downloaded more than a billion singles and about 57 million albums that same year. But, for a recorded medium that has spent most of the past decade on life support, last year's 2.9 million isn't bad. Again, according to the association: In the years after 1998, when about 3.4 million LPs and EPs were shipped, LP/EP shipments went into a steady free fall until 2006, when fewer than a million were shipped. Then came 2007, when LP/EP shipments jumped to about 1.3 million, setting the stage for last year's 2.9 million. The bottom line: Last year brought shipments of vinyl records back to where they were 10 years ago.

Great stuff. Thanks to Michael Cuscuna. Starting at the beginning... Albert Ayler - Vibrations (AL 1000) Marion Brown - Porto Novo (AL 1001)

I agree from the stand point of a game of baseball it looks stupid. However, I think there may be some franchises that are so desperate for money where they need it NOW, or closer to now than a few months from now. I don't know any dirty details about the Ray's ownership, but you think of some of the arrogant jerks (such as the Cubs' last owner) along with other rich folk who made seriously awful investments...(Imagine if any in Tampa ownership invested in FL real estate during the bubble?) Like I said, I don't have a clue about TB financial details, just saying such tough times could lead to needing money over trying win to wild card, sad to say. Exhibit one for the financial problems is supposedly the Mets, who are in deep financial doo-doo. I keep hearing that the owner lost 700 million in the Madoff swindle. Panda hit just one out for the Giants, 1-0. There are rumors that the Wilpons will sell the Mets, that they didn't fire Minaya because they didn't want to eat his contract, that the budget for next year will be much lower- that's all possible. The Wilpons did lose a bundle to Made-off. I think the Mets' financial problems are not as bad as everyone may think. Remember they got $400 million from Citigroup TARP funds earlier this year.... http://www.cnn.com/2009/US/04/13/mets.ballpark/

There are multiple reports about this so it seems likely it will happen but it makes zero sense, IMHO. The Rays are trying to win the WC and if they do, they'll face the Angels. Why make a trade that makes their path to the ALCS harder? Why make their opponent, who has won with hitting and mediocre pitching for the most part, better? I could understand if they put Kazmir on the market in November but why do it now? Paps, what's the story here?? He's got a 5.92 ERA but he's pitched pretty well in past 3 starts. It just can't be salary shredding.

Yes you're right and unfortunately for baseball the steroid controversy(and list of the 104) will be the 800 pound gorilla that everyone wants to go away but won't. So what happens then?? I don't have the answer - just thinking out loud.
-
Yeah, I'm not so much worried about the impact it will have on the Bonds case then as it will have on the whole steroids controversy. I think for baseball to move on they(the league and the union) have to deal w/ the list in an open and truthful manner and as long as the IDs of the 104 are "unknown" I don't think there can be any resolution. Not that making the names public would solve the whole problem but I think it would be a step in the right direction. Stop dragging it out and deal w/ the problem for once and for all.
