MLB 2018: let the games begin!

Did you read my last post?! Was I looking at the ALCS through "Yankee colored glasses" last year? I don't even know why this argument is so important to you. Me, I'm just tired of taking crap from other posters about the team I like when it's completely unwarranted. I don't come here and s*&% all over the Mets or the Red Sox or the Rangers or other teams that I know people who post here like, or take snarky little shots at them. I'll give you an objective comment right now. I'm pissed as hell that Boone used D-Rob, Betances, and Chapman to "give them some work" in a 9-0 blowout against the Red Sox on Sunday when he knew he had Loaisiga and German--two pitchers who have struggled to go five innings in their starts--going up against the Braves, one of the best-hitting teams in baseball, the following two nights. And guess what happened? He had to use them again last night, in an extra-innings loss, and now they're unavailable this evening. German just gave up three runs in the top of the fifth and had to come out, and NY was lucky to escape with a 6-3 lead. They may well lose this game yet tonight because of the decision Boone made on Sunday. -
Not a ton, but I can't remember the exact amount, unfortunately. Maybe an hour in all? I'll message Loren and see if he can tell me. I did listen to some of it while I was there--a 1938 broadcast and a 1946 "Happy Go Lucky Local," which may not actually be part of the "Savory collection," although it's listed as part of that on the computer there.

I'm also as objective as any fan can be--if anything, like Dan with the Red Sox, usually excessively critical of the team I root for. I remember Catesta (who I think is a Yankee fan as well) being irked at me last year after the Yankees went up 3-2 in the ALCS over Houston, because I was pessimistic that NY would win the series. Why? Because Houston consistently knocked them around at home all last season, and the final two games were at Houston. -

Disagree. I’ve seen Judge catch balls like that in similar circumstances. What’s wrong with saying that he almost caught it? It doesn’t undermine the validity of the Braves’ win, it’s not “moaning” or “whining.” Kay and O’Neill didn’t sound overjoyed, sure, but they’re the Yankee announcers. Are they supposed to sound elated? They sounded subdued, if anything. And NY shoulders all the blame and the Braves get all the credit for winning that one. Your initial post, that’s your take, whatever. Jsngry’s response spun it into the territory of Yankee-bashing, which, free forum and all, but that goes all ways. -

I'll be featuring the album on today's "Just You And Me" from 3-5 p.m. EST, along with some commentary from Ravi Coltrane, and some early-1930s Louis Armstrong sides (in honor of tomorrow's holiday and Louis' ceremonial birthday). You can listen online at indianapublicmedia.org. -

I just watched/listened to the archive broadcast and they didn't sound at all like they were "moaning" or "whining," if you're referring to Michael Kay and Paul O'Neill. It did go off Judge's glove and he did nearly catch it. He's an outstanding right fielder and he's taken away potential home runs on a number of occasions. One of the many things I like about Kay, O'Neill, David Cone, and Ken Singleton is their respect for opposing players and teams, and Kay and O'Neill certainly expressed it for Ronald Acuna and the other young Braves players last night during the parts of the game that I watched. -

I went to bed after the Yankees failed to score with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 10th; at that point, I knew that having blown so many opportunities, they were most likely going to lose. They were 0-12 with RISP last night... pathetic. And for all of the talk about the "weakness" of the Braves' bullpen, it was the Yankees' that ultimately folded with D-Rob in the 11th. Kudos to the Braves for gutting out that win. To me the biggest failure was Greg Bird striking out on three straight pitches in that bases-loaded, one-out situation in the 10th, when a sac fly or almost any kind of contact would have put the winning run across. So far he's been another Tyler Austin/Chris Carter... a .200 hitter who occasionally blasts a homer or two and strikes out a lot. Still waiting for the performance to catch up with the hype. The Yankees did get a bad break in the bottom of the 9th when Hicks scorched that ground-rule double down the rightfield line... if it hadn't bounced into the stands, Gregorious would almost certainly have scored from first and the game would have ended. But they had plenty of other chances to put it away and didn't get the job done. -

Just came across this comment from an Over The Monster poster, which affirms something I mentioned earlier--that Price is actually pitching quite decently across the course of his Boston contract so far against teams that aren't the Yankees: If you remove his games against the Yankees (which I did, since they have his number), Price has a 3.35 ERA in 354.1 innings with the Sox thus far. He’s allowing a .229/.287/.377 triple slash against hitters. 95 walks, 363 strikeouts. That’s 2.4 BB/9 and 9.2 K/9. To put it into context. When Price IS NOT PITCHING AGAINST THE YANKEES, he’s pitched comparably to Carlos Martinez and Jake Arrieta (but with better peripherals) over the time frame mentioned above. -

Atlanta's sure hitting the ball well and scoring--actually ranked ahead of NY right now on ESPN's MLB team stats chart: MLB team hitting stats Edit: or right behind NY, after last night's game was factored in. Still really impressive. How's their pitching? -

No doubt. I should add that outside of his performance against NY, Price has pitched better against other teams than Gray has against non-Boston teams. OTOH Price makes about five times what Gray does. I don't know what NY's answer is for the Sonny Gray situation. I do NOT want to see them include Andujar in any trade that's made for a starting pitcher, no matter who it is. Miggy's only 23 and has already proven to be one of our most reliable hitters this season, along with Torres; neither one of them is a "prospect" anymore. We can back the farm truck up though, if the return is significant enough, even if it means parting with Clint Frazier as well. Really frustrating that Gray can't get himself to the level of a decent third or fourth starter, which is all we were really seeking or expecting from him in the first place. German is still too inconsistent and Loaisiga, impressive as he's been, has started only three games and is almost certainly on a severe innings limit. Tanaka should be back in the rotation in the next week or so, which will obviously be helpful, although he too has been inconsistent this year. Hell, I don't know, maybe we should go to a "bullpen day" a la Rays if we have to? Or try to snag J.A. Happ as a rental, if the price is right. I'm not sold on Cole Hamels as the potential salvation of the rotation. -

A whole hour of Alice Coltrane's music on this Night Lights show from 2007 (she passed away while I was working on it). I, too, would love to hear any live early 1970s material that Impulse and/or the Coltrane family might have. -

He's Boston's answer to Sonny Gray, at least when it comes to games against the principal AL East rival. If the two of them started against each other, it'd be a fair fight. Weird how last night's game was a mirror image of Saturday night's blowout. -
This show has sent me back to your Lee Morgan biography as well. Mjzee, I've got both of those Birdland Roulettes and am going to give them a listen this afternoon. It's been a long time since I played them, and my memory is that they're enjoyable jams, but maybe a bit too long & loose for the show... however, they're on the program-planning agenda, that's for sure.

Same here! I saw Zev's post about this on Facebook the other day. -
I'm working on a Night Lights show for the week after next that features recordings made together by Hank Mobley and Lee Morgan. It's been a real joy to go back and revisit all of their Blue Note sessions (and the early Savoy date as well) and assemble a potential playlist. Here are some potential tracks: "Hank's Shout" (from the Savoy date) "M & M" (with Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers) One of the first three tracks off Peckin' Time "No Room For Squares" "Carolyn" "Ceora" "Straight No Filter" Possibly something from A Slice Of The Top ("Hank's Other Bag") I'll probably use "Syrup And Biscuits" with a fadeout in the opening "newshole" segment (a segment exactly five minutes long that some stations take, while other stations cut away for news). Anyway, curious to hear what other posters here rank as their favorite Mobley-Morgan encounters on record. This is the third Lee Morgan tandem show I've done; the others are Shorter Lee: Lee Morgan and Wayne Shorter and Jackie McLean and Lee Morgan: The Dynamic Hardbop Duo.

Thanks for the heads-up... news to me as well. I bought it at Landlocked the other day but haven't cracked it open yet.
